Sandwich making

Kadima Students Put the Giving into the Chanukah Season

Kadima Reconstructionist Community Sunday School students will pack and deliver 100 home-style sack lunches for the residents at Tent City 3.

Homemade, high protein sandwiches are accompanied by bags of baby carrots, pretzels, home baked cookies, condiment packets and a napkin tucked nicely into the traditional brown bag sack lunch, just like mom or dad would make and send you off to school with.

Students hope not only to provide a nice lunch, but also to evoke good memories from one's youth with these lunch bags.

This will be the Kadima Sunday School's eighth consecutive year making and delivering these lunches; a favorite school and community tikkun olam program. This year's lunch packing party is happening on Sunday, December 16th, the eighth and final day of Chanukah.

Tent City residents welcome and enjoy the visit from Kadima students. Residents provide a tour and answer the students' thoughtful questions. The residents tell us that these visits from our students help them to feel less invisible and lost within the city.

Seattle Jewish Chorale Fundraiser at Veggie Grill
After a week of latkes and sufganiyot, ready for something a little healthier? As Hanukkah ends, join Seattle Jewish Chorale for dinner at Veggie Grill in University Village (next to Lululemon). New to Seattle, Veggie Grill was named "One of L.A.'s 'Can't Miss' Cheap Eats" by Los Angeles Magazine, and "One of L.A.'s Top Ten New Restaurants" by Citysearch. The casual-yet-stylish eatery gives tasty comfort foods such as burgers, BBQ, and buffalo wings a healthy makeover that will please omnivores and vegans. A selection of salads, soups, child's meals, and desserts--all free of cholesterol, trans-fats, and refined sugar--rounds out the menu.

There is no cover charge to attend, and there will be a free drawing for tickets to Fiddler on the Roof at the Village Theatre. Just mention the fundraiser while ordering, and 50% of food and beverage purchases (excluding tax, comps and gift cards) will be donated to Seattle Jewish Chorale's operating budget, to help pay for basic choir needs (e.g., sheet music and director's stipend), and underwrite community outreach performances. Kadimaniks Suzie Hellerstein and Sima Kahn sing in the chorale. RSVPs to jewishchorale@live.com or on the Chorale's Facebook page are encouraged, but drop-ins are also welcome.

Twice monthly on Thursdays, Jan. 10 - May 23  ·  7 - 8:30 pm  ·  Bet Alef Office (1111 Harvard Ave, Seattle)

Bet Alef Meditative Synagogue presents:
From Age-ing to Sage-ing, Entering Into Spiritual Conversation
The beauty of our life path is that, at every stage and with every age, there is an opportunity for personal growth. Our transition from adulthood to elderhood is such an opportunity. With the aging of our physical being comes a need for an evolving spiritual consciousness in support of maintaining vitality and continued contribution to family, friends and community. This is what Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi calls "Spiritual Eldering."

Join a conversation on the topic of aging and Spiritual Eldering which will follow the outline of Reb Zalman and Ronald Miller's book, From Age-ing to Sage-ing: A Profound New Vision of Growing Older. Program cost: $120 members; $160 non-members. Participants will need to purchase the book separately before the class starts. Register here. For more info, email Rabbi Olivier.

Objectives:
  • To be able to discover the tools needed to "harvest life" more fully through personal transformation.
  • To find avenues to make contributions to family, community, and society by providing wisdom through mentoring and by healing those around us.
  • To strengthen our community by growing individually and together.
