In the Be'chol Lashon Newsletter: October 2012

Feel the rhythm of Jamaica's Judaism
by Roberto Loiederman, Jewish Journal, October 10, 2012
The first thing you notice at Shaare Shalom Congregation in Kingston, Jamaica is the sand on the floor.... (continued)

by Nathan Abrams, Haaretz, October 14, 2012
Many myths have shaped the relationship between the Welsh and the Jews. Present in Wales since medieval times, Jews have been episodically welcomed, expelled, admired and more recently been regarded with hostility on account of modern-day Welsh identification with the fate of the Palestinians. (continued)

by Ruth Ellen Gruber, JTA, October 17, 2012
"In a medieval tavern in 21st century Italy, waitresses in archaic costumes served a tepid, chalk-white substance the texture of oatmeal to tables filled with slightly skeptical diners.

"Sweet yet salty, and flavored with a mix of unexpectedly tangy spices, it turned out to be a tasty puree made from shredded chicken breast, almond milk, rose water, cloves and rice flour." (continued)

Stopsky's deli

It's exciting when a national magazine gives props to a local eatery. The September issue of Bon Appetit recommends Stopsky's Delicatessen on Mercer Island.

"Stop by for the afternoon happy hour; even the celery soda is house-made.

"Must-Order: Latkes Benedict (poached eggs, latkes, and hollandaise) with lox."
