| The Seattle Times reviewed the 24th Earshot Jazz Festival's opening event, "A Tribute to Clarence Acox." After the testimonials and proclamation were made, Mr. Acox debuted the 2012-13 Garfield High School Jazz ensemble. In his review of the ensemble's performance, Tom Keogh wrote, "A groove was quickly established ...with powerful solos by saxophonist Ariel Loud and pianist Jack Swigget." Ariel is a Kadima graduate. The Hour of Sunlight, by Jen Marlow, tells the story of Sami Al Jundi, a Palestinian former militant who has become a powerful voice for peace. Sami was a teenager when a bomb he was building exploded prematurely, killing one of his friends and landing him in an Israeli prison for a ten-year sentence. It was in prison that his ideas about nonviolence and reconciliation first took root and changed the course of his battle for Palestinian statehood forever.
Leading Israeli political columnist Akiva Eldar calls the book, "Essential reading for anyone interested in a deep understanding of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, as well as the fabric of Palestinian and Israeli society."

The Emperor of Atlantis was composed in the Terezín concentration camp in 1943. Camp authorities halted its final rehearsals once they saw its provocative allusions to Hitler and his war machine.

Ahmet Ozhan is a prominent Turkish classical and mystic (Sufi) musician, conductor and actor. He has released many albums and performed all over the world, from Tokyo to San Francisco. He has been the General Director of the Istanbul Historical Turkish Music Ensemble since 1991. He will perform with his ensemble in the Seattle area for the first time. Tickets at the gate on the day of the event -- cash only -- $30. No one under the age of 8 permitted, but there will be separate activities for children ages 0 - 7. Now thru Nov. 4 ˇ Washington State History Museum (1911 Pacific Ave, Tacoma)The 1929 Wall Street collapse plunged Americans into a period of great uncertainty as unemployment skyrocketed, banks failed, and housing foreclosures hit record highs. Hope in Hard Times shares how ordinary people worked for change in their communities, pulling together to find ways to deal with the crisis. A billy club used during the 1934 "Battle of Smith Cove," WPA artifacts and everyday items are among some of the objects showcased in this exhibition. The paintings and sketches of Ronald Debs Ginther, also featured in the exhibition, comprise one of the most complete visual records of the Great Depression.
