HUNDREDS OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS, FACULTY, STAFF, STUDENTS & FAMILIES JOIN CYSD'S 10TH ANNUAL DIVERSITY CELEBRATION
Central York School District hosted its 10th Annual Diversity celebration Thursday, April 28, 2016 at Central York Middle School. Central York community members of ALL ages came together to enjoy food, live music, displays, and children's activities. Attendees also had the privilege of hearing the inspirational story of Loretta Claiborne. Ms. Claiborne is a Special Olympian and York County native who overcame many obstacles in her life to become a decorated Olympian and Special Olympics ambassador to dignitaries and groups throughout the world. Ms. Claiborne, whose life mission is to show
that people with intellectual and physical disabilities are equal to those without, spoke to students about overcoming fear, finding their passion and doing their best in all they do. Earlier in the afternoon, Ms. Claiborne, joined by Tim Shriver, Chairman of the Special Olympics, shared a similar message and participated in a "Question-and-Answer" session with Central York Middle and High School learners.
The 10th Annual celebration featured the "Making a Difference" awards honoring learners, faculty, staff and alumni who are making positive contributions to others' lives. This year's honorees included:

The celebration concluded with the presentation of the Adam J. Taliaferro Resiliency Award to Central York Middle School's Grace Strayer, a student who has overcome many personal health challenges throughout her life and who is known for her courage, spirit and positive attitude.
Thank you to the community members who helped make this year's event our largest in history. We appreciate your support of our efforts to celebrate diversity and honor Central York learners, faculty, staff and alumni who are working hard to make our world a better place now, and in the future.

CALENDAR UPDATES FOR 2015-2016
New Last Day of School for Students During its Regular (Action) Meeting held Monday, April 18, 2016, the Central York School District Board of School Directors changed the last day of school for students for the 2015-2016 school year. The new last day of school for students is Friday, June 3, 2016. This will be a FULL DAY of school for CYSD students
Graduation Date Commencement Exercises for the Class of 2016 will be held Friday, May 27, 2016, at Central York High School. The ceremony will start at 6:45PM and will be held outdoors, in the Athletic Stadium, weather permitting. Please stay tuned for additional information and updates as the date approaches.
2016-2017 District Calendar
The first day of school for students will be Wednesday, August 24, 2016. The last day of school for students will be Thursday, June 1, 2017.

CYHS PERFORMING ARTS DEPARTMENT PRESENTS TWELVE ANGRY JURORS STUDIO PLAY
The Performing Arts Department will present its Studio Play, Twelve Angry Jurors, Wednesday, April 27, Thursday, April 28 and Friday, April 29 at Central York High School, 601 Mundis Mill Road, York. Performances will be held in the school's Black Box Theatre and begin at 7:30PM each night. Tickets cost $6, and all seating is general admission. Tickets will be available at the door, or reservations can be made by emailing mzortman@cysd.k12.pa.us or calling 846-6789 ext 1338.
Twelve Angry Jurors is based on the 1957 film, adapted from a teleplay of the same name by Reginald Rose. It tells the story of a jury as its members deliberate the guilt or acquittal of a defendant on the basis of reasonable doubt. The show explores many techniques of consensus-building, and the difficulties encountered in the process, among a group of people whose ranges of personality add intensity and conflict. A remake of the film was made in 1997.

ARTS & HUMANITIES ACADEMY, YORK DAILY RECORD COLLABORATE TO HOST FIRST COMMUCON AT CENTRAL YORK HS
On April 20, Central York High School's Arts and Humanities Academy presented CommuCon, a daylong event focused on bringing real-world communications professionals together with high school learners. With the help of student guides from the school's Public Relations class, each 10th grade Central York High School learner participated in a series of workshops that explored social media, broadcast journalism, public relations, digital graphic journalism/video, design, and illustration. Central York High School faculty and administration collaborated with the York Daily Record to plan the day. Event organizers included: Mr. Randy Parker, managing editor, YDR, and Buffy Andrews, editor, YDR, along with CYHS faculty members, including Lucinda Hogentogler, Andrew Shumway, Dianna Guise and Jim Howard. NEW YOUTUBE CHANNEL PROVIDES AT-HOME TUTORIALS FOR CENTRAL YORK FAMILIES, STUDENTS
Central York School District's Technology Support Teachers recently launched a YouTube Channel that will house dozens of informational and educational videos for families and students related to using technology in support of learning and other District initiatives. The CYSD Panther Family Portal is already home to 9 short videos created to support families and students with using the different features and apps available on personal learning devices used by our students and in our classrooms.

CYHS WILL HONOR SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS MAY 20
The Central York High School Awards Assembly will be held at 9AM May 20 in the High School Auditorium.
If you have received a scholarship, and wish to be recognized at the assembly, please ask the scholarship organization providing you with this to contact Mr. McGee (mmcgee@cysd.k12.pa.us) or Mrs. Shue (sshue@cysd.k12.pa.us) in the High School Guidance Office by May 6. In addition, a representative from the scholarship organization should be prepared to present the award at the assembly.

2016 PSSA TESTING WINDOWS, LETTERS NOW ONLINE
The annual Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) is a standards based criterion-referenced assessment used to measure a student's attainment of the academic standards while also determining the degree to which school programs enable students to attain proficiency of the standards. PSSA tests will be administered at Central York School District on the dates listed below. The information obtained from these assessments serves as a valuable tool for planning future school programs, developing curriculum and in-service training of teachers, and informing the public about student achievement.
- April 11-15, 2016: PSSA English/Language Arts,
Grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 - April 18-April 22, 2016: PSSA Mathematics,
Grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 - April 25-April 29, 2016: PSSA Science Grades 4 & 8
Keystone Exams are end-of-course assessments that evaluate what students know and are able to do in core subject areas. The Central York School District will administer Keystone Exams to Central York Middle School and Central York High School students according to the following schedule. CYEA WILL HOST ANNUAL YARD SALE APRIL 30
The Central York Education Association will once again sponsor a yard sale to benefit the Clark Millard Scholarship Fund and the Holiday Drive for District families in need. The CYEA Yard Sale will be held from 8AM-1PM Saturday, April 30, at Central York High School. The event is rain or shine. |
COMMUNITY INVITED TO UPCOMING IMPROV SHOWS AT CENTRAL YORK HIGH SCHOOL
Central York High School's talented improv actors, directed by teacher Ben Hodge, invite the public to two upcoming shows planned for 7-9PM April 8 and May 16 in the school's "Black Box Theater."
The performances, dubbed "Improvnia," will feature four improv teams, including Copyright Flop, Lo' Real Spice, The ( ) and Loose Vegas.
Each Improvia performance begins with the team of performers asking the audience for a one-word suggestion. From there, the teams perform an entirely unscripted improvisational show based on the audience's suggestions.
In addition to the high school teams, professional improv coaches and teams perform sets at Improvnia. These performers come from New York City, Philadelphia and Bethlehem, PA. One team from each of these areas plans to attend and perform at the upcoming shows.
The next two Improvnia shows are April 8 and May 16. Each show will be from 7-9PM, open to the community, and held in the Central York High School Black Box Theater. Tickets cost $10/each and are sold at the door.
