SPECIAL OLYMPIAN & YORK COUNTY NATIVE LORETTA CLAIBORNE WILL SPEAK AT DIVERSITY CELEBRATION

Central York School District is pleased to announce that Loretta Claiborne - who served as Keynote Speaker at our first event 10 years ago - will deliver the Keynote Address at this year's 10th Annual Diversity Celebration planned for Thursday, April 28, 2016 at Central York Middle School.

Ms. Claiborne was the middle of seven children in a poor, single-parent family. Born partially blind and intellectually challenged, she was unable to walk or talk until age 4. Eventually, though, she began to run. She has finished 26 marathons and twice placed among the top 100 women in the Boston Marathon. She holds the current women's record in her age group for the 5,000 meters (17 minutes). In addition, Ms. Claiborne has been honored (in 1996) with ESPN'sESPY Arthur Ashe Award for Courage.  It has been her life's mission to show that people with intellectual and physical disabilities are equal to those without.

The annual event will feature entertainment, food, vendors, displays, music and "Making a Difference" awards for District learners, faculty and staff who are making a positive contribution to others' lives.

The event will be held from 5:30-8PM, is free to the community and will feature activities and entertainment for all ages and interests. Attendees are encouraged to bring a canned good or household item to donate to the District's "Panther Pantry," a food and household item collection for district families in need.
