Central York School District encourages community members to learn more about the proposed 2016-2017 General Fund Budget and other topics related to major district initiatives at its upcoming Spring Town Meeting, planned for 7PM Wednesday, April 13, at North Hills Elementary School. Central York School District hosts two public town meetings annually. These are opportunities for community members, faculty and staff, students and families to learn more about the District, and to ask questions of the Board and Administration in an informal setting. CENTRAL YORK HIGH SCHOOL WILL HOST YORK COUNTY HEROIN TASK FORCE COMMUNITY FORUM APRIL 14
Members of the York County Heroin Taskforce will present heroin and opiate awareness education in a public town hall format from 6:30-9PM Thursday, April 14, 2016, in the Central York High School auditorium. A mother who lost her son to heroin, Charlene Sciaretta, will share her family's story. York County Coroner Pam Gay and Chief Deputy Coroner Claude Stabley will give a presentation titled, "Heroin - An Epidemic - What You Need to Know." Sr. Deputy Prosecutor Dave Sunday of the District Attorney's office and members of local law enforcement officials will also speak. There will be opportunities for questions and answers following the presentations. The meeting is free and open to the public. Parents/guardians are encouraged to attend, along with their middle-school and/or high-school-aged students. Various agencies offering treatment and recovery resources will be present, also. SPECIAL OLYMPIAN & YORK COUNTY NATIVE LORETTA CLAIBORNE WILL SPEAK AT DIVERSITY CELEBRATION
Central York School District is pleased to announce that Loretta Claiborne - who served as Keynote Speaker at our first event 10 years ago - will deliver the Keynote Address at this year's 10th Annual Diversity Celebration planned for Thursday, April 28, 2016 at Central York Middle School.
Ms. Claiborne was the middle of seven children in a poor, single-parent family. Born partially blind and intellectually challenged, she was unable to walk or talk until age 4. Eventually, though, she began to run. She has finished 26 marathons and twice placed among the top 100 women in the Boston Marathon. She holds the current women's record in her age group for the 5,000 meters (17 minutes). In addition, Ms. Claiborne has been honored (in 1996) with ESPN'sESPY Arthur Ashe Award for Courage. It has been her life's mission to show that people with intellectual and physical disabilities are equal to those without.
The annual event will feature entertainment, food, vendors, displays, music and "Making a Difference" awards for District learners, faculty and staff who are making a positive contribution to others' lives.
The event will be held from 5:30-8PM, is free to the community and will feature activities and entertainment for all ages and interests. Attendees are encouraged to bring a canned good or household item to donate to the District's "Panther Pantry," a food and household item collection for district families in need.

CYHS STUDENTS TAKE TOP HONORS AT OPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL ORATORICAL CONTEST
On Saturday, April 2, six Central York High School students and five York Catholic students competed individually in an Optimist International Oratorical Contest. Participants spoke on the topic, "How My Best Brings Out The Best In Others." Central York High School participants (pictured above) included: Emma Long, Afrah Howlader, Dylan Warner, Deborah Dadeboe, Ayushi Gupta, and Lilia Wiltshire. Congratulations to CYHS the top place finishes, including:
- First Place: Deborah Dadeboe
- Second Place: Dylan Warner
- Third Place: Ayushi Gupta
Deborah Dadeboe will now advance to the district competition. |
CALENDAR UPDATES FOR 2015-2016
Commencement Exercises for the Class of 2016 will be held Friday, May 27, 2016, at Central York High School. The ceremony will start at 6:45PM and will be held outdoors, in the Athletic Stadium, weather permitting. Please stay tuned for additional information and updates as the date approaches.

Due to the January/February 2016 weather-related school closings, Central York School District will now be in session on the following Weather Emergency Make-Up Dates:- Monday, April 18, 2016
- Monday, June 6, 2016 (New Last Day of School for Students)

The first day of school for students will be Wednesday, August 24, 2016. The last day of school for students will be Thursday, June 1, 2017.

SCHOOL BOARD TO MEET APRIL 18
The Central York School District Board of School Directors will hold its public Planning and Regular (Action) Meetings at 7:15PM Monday, April 4, and Monday, April 18, respectively, at the Educational Service Center, 775 Marion Road, York. School Board meetings are public and community members are encouraged to attend. NEW YOUTUBE CHANNEL PROVIDES AT-HOME TUTORIALS FOR CENTRAL YORK FAMILIES, STUDENTS
Central York School District's Technology Support Teachers recently launched a YouTube Channel that will house dozens of informational and educational videos for families and students related to using technology in support of learning and other District initiatives. The CYSD Panther Family Portal is already home to 9 short videos created to support families and students with using the different features and apps available on personal learning devices used by our students and in our classrooms.

MIDDLE SCHOOL PLANS ANNUAL LADIES' NIGHT OUT EVENT
Central York Middle School invites 8th Grade female students to a night of fun and friendship at its annual Ladies' Night Out event planned for 5-10PM April 22, 2016.
This year's event will feature a special performance by Ces Picerno, a talented musician and songwriter who will visit the Middle School to share her story and talents with LNO attendees this year.

2016 PSSA TESTING WINDOWS, LETTERS NOW ONLINE
The annual Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) is a standards based criterion-referenced assessment used to measure a student's attainment of the academic standards while also determining the degree to which school programs enable students to attain proficiency of the standards. PSSA tests will be administered at Central York School District on the dates listed below. The information obtained from these assessments serves as a valuable tool for planning future school programs, developing curriculum and in-service training of teachers, and informing the public about student achievement.
- April 11-15, 2016: PSSA English/Language Arts,
Grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 - April 18-April 22, 2016: PSSA Mathematics,
Grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 - April 25-April 29, 2016: PSSA Science Grades 4 & 8
Keystone Exams are end-of-course assessments that evaluate what students know and are able to do in core subject areas. The Central York School District will administer Keystone Exams to Central York Middle School and Central York High School students according to the following schedule. Central York School District invites you to learn more about "Mass Customized Learning" and our efforts to customize the education experience for our K-12 learners.
Please mark your calendar and plan to attend one of our upcoming, informal conversations about customized learning and what it means for Central York School District and your learner and family. CYEA WILL HOST ANNUAL YARD SALE APRIL 30
The Central York Education Association will once again sponsor a yard sale to benefit the Clark Millard Scholarship Fund and the Holiday Drive for District families in need. The CYEA Yard Sale will be held from 8AM-1PM Saturday, April 30, at Central York High School. The event is rain or shine. Teachers, administrators, staff, parents, and district residents are invited to participate in the event. You can reserve two parking spaces for $15, three spaces for $20, or four spaces for $25.
Set up for the event will take place between 6-8AM April 30. Vehicles will be allowed inside the parking lot for unloading from 6-7:30AM. After that time, all vehicles must be moved to a designated parking area.
If you are interested in reserving a spot,
registration forms are available in the office of each building or can be downloaded and printed here.
Please return your registration form and checks, made payable to CYEA, to Angela Garland at North Hills Elementary School, no later than Tuesday, April 19.

COMMUNITY INVITED TO UPCOMING IMPROV SHOWS AT CENTRAL YORK HIGH SCHOOL
Central York High School's talented improv actors, directed by teacher Ben Hodge, invite the public to two upcoming shows planned for 7-9PM April 8 and May 16 in the school's "Black Box Theater."
The performances, dubbed "Improvnia," will feature four improv teams, including Copyright Flop, Lo' Real Spice, The ( ) and Loose Vegas.
Each Improvia performance begins with the team of performers asking the audience for a one-word suggestion. From there, the teams perform an entirely unscripted improvisational show based on the audience's suggestions.
In addition to the high school teams, professional improv coaches and teams perform sets at Improvnia. These performers come from New York City, Philadelphia and Bethlehem, PA. One team from each of these areas plans to attend and perform at the upcoming shows.
The next two Improvnia shows are April 8 and May 16. Each show will be from 7-9PM, open to the community, and held in the Central York High School Black Box Theater. Tickets cost $10/each and are sold at the door.
