ROBOT, TECHNOLOGY CONNECT
STONY BROOK CHILD UNDERGOING TREATMENT FOR LEUKEMIA WITH CLASSMATES
Zach Shiffer, a second-grade student of Stony Brook Elementary School,
now can stay connected with his teachers and classmates daily - while undergoing treatment for leukemia at Hershey Medical Center - thanks to a specially designed robot!
Earlier this week, Mrs. Speelman's second grade classroom welcomed ZAP (Zach's Automated Presence) to school (pictured, above). ZAP uses an iPad placed in a mobile robotics base, combined with an app and remote control, to allow Zach to interface with his classmates and teachers remotely. Through ZAP, Zach can participate in classroom lessons, lunchtime, and indoor recess activities. Best of all, he can be part of his classroom regularly even though he can't be there "in person" at the moment.
Mrs. Speelman introduced ZAP to the entire school during a Friday morning school-wide meeting. His classmates are thrilled to be able to interact with Zach while he is undergoing treatment, and the technology provides Zach with a connection to his school and friends on a daily basis. To learn more, visit Mrs. Speelman's website.
