Sinking Springs Elementary Learners Raising Funds for Susquehanna Service Dogs

Throughout this school year, fourth and fifth grade learners of Mrs. Jaime Antoun, Sinking Springs Elementary School, have  participated in a yearlong project to benefit Susquehanna Service Dogs and help learners with special needs.

Their goal? Start a visiting dog program that helps students with autism increase their communication and language skills.

Mrs. Antoun's students have researched and created projects about service dogs to help them achieve their goal. From researching about service dogs to creating their own audio books, they have learned that it costs $25,000 to train one service dog and $5,000 to place a service dog with a partner.  In addition, each month, the students invite
a different kind of service dog to a demonstration for learners and teachers across the school. Demonstrators have included:

Susquehanna Service Dogs, York County Sheriff's K9, Loving Eyes Seeing Eye 4H Puppy Club, and KPETS Therapy Dogs.

The learners are raising funds through a Tabs for Labs Collection program they started at their school, and have already collected over 40,000 tabs. Their goal is to collect one million tabs, which will raise more than $200 at the current rate. Each school will receive a Tabs for Labs collection recycling bin for the cafeteria this winter.

Parents/Guardians Invited to Winter, Spring

"Mass Customized Learning Forums"

Central York School District's School Board, Administration, Faculty & Staff, Parents/Guardians and Community members have been working together for the past few years to determine how we can best support our K-12 learners with a customized education experience designed to best meet each individual student's needs while preparing them for success in school and beyond.

Although a lot of the conversations about customized learning started with our Comprehensive Planning Process, and continued through several public Town Meetings and School Board meetings, we are still hoping for more opportunities to engage directly with parents/guardians about what this means for our schools.

We are currently in the planning stages and talking about many different ways that we can provide the best learning experience for our students and families - and we definitely need input from our parents and guardians to help with this process!

Our Fall "Mass Customized Learning Forums" provided an excellent opportunity for us to speak with parents and guardians about Mass Customized Learning and Central York School District. We are hosting another series of these forums starting this month, and hope you can join us!
