CYHS Student Finishes 10th of 14,000 Students in National Competition; Earns $20,000 Scholarship

Congratulations to Central York High School senior Pavel Shuvalau who recently was awarded a $20,000 H&R Block Budget Challenge Scholarship following his 10th place finish among 14,000 student competitors nationwide.

Shuvalau, a Personal Finance student of Mr. Brian Stormes, participated in the company's national budgeting simulation in the fall of 2015. The H&R Block Budget Challenge encourages students to learn personal finance in a fun, engaging way while competing against other classrooms and students for $3 million in classroom grants and student scholarships.

As part of the challenge, Shuvalau was given a career and had to make real-world financial decisions and manage those decisions over a nine-week period with a goal of increasing his 401K contributions by the challenge's end.

More than 14,000 students participated in the simulation, and the top 20 performers, including Shuvalau, received $20,000 scholarships.

Please join us in congratulating Shuvalau and Mr. Stormes on this outstanding accomplishment!

Shuvalau is pictured, above (far left),  with Mr. Eric Wolfgang, Central York School Board President, who joined the School Board and Administration in honoring Shuvalau's achievements during the public meeting held Monday, January 11.

Parents/Guardians Invited to Winter, Spring

"Mass Customized Learning Forums"

Central York School District's School Board, Administration, Faculty & Staff, Parents/Guardians and Community members have been working together for the past few years to determine how we can best support our K-12 learners with a customized education experience designed to best meet each individual student's needs while preparing them for success in school and beyond.

Although a lot of the conversations about customized learning started with our Comprehensive Planning Process, and continued through several public Town Meetings and School Board meetings, we are still hoping for more opportunities to engage directly with parents/guardians about what this means for our schools.

We are currently in the planning stages and talking about many different ways that we can provide the best learning experience for our students and families - and we definitely need input from our parents and guardians to help with this process!

Our Fall "Mass Customized Learning Forums" provided an excellent opportunity for us to speak with parents and guardians about Mass Customized Learning and Central York School District. We are hosting another series of these forums starting this month, and hope you can join us!

CYHS Student Artists Craft, Install Sculptures at Local John Wright Restaurant

If you visit John Wright Restaurant, be sure to take some time to check out one of the business's newest works of art, created and installed by Central York High School student artists and art teachers in late December 2015.

Vaudrey Carillo, Alex Myers and Justin Ruby, students of Mr. Andrew Wertz, High School Art Teacher, participated in the project as part of Mr. Wertz's 3-D Design Class. Mr. Wertz
asked students to create a sculpture from found objects that would other wise be seen as useless.

The three students took the project from concept to creation to installation. Mr. Wertz and fellow Art Instructors Mr. James Howard and Mr. Andrew Walker helped with installation on the restaurant's property.

Arthur and Don Mann, the owners of the John Wright Restaurant, are very pleased to display the new semi-permanent "Long Level Driftwood Creature," (pictured below) on the property. Learn more about their project and process via their website: http://thedepthsoflonglevel.weebly.com/about.html
