Montessori Moment
Meeting our Great Author
By Nicole Filer, Lower Elementary Directress
At the beginning of each year in the Lower Elementary Montessori environment, we present the Five Great Lessons. Cosmic in nature, these stories tell about the Universe from the first moment of creation, painting a marvelous picture of growing intricacy that soon encompasses all of creation. We paint for the child the most extravagant and glorious of pictures, full of never-ending possibilities, mysteries, joys, and wonders. From these grand stories all other lessons presented in subsequent years are pulled. All of humanity and creation, every subject and area of study can be traced back to the Great Lessons. Thus, these lessons are seen as pieces of a larger puzzle, gaining an importance, greater purpose, and a personal connection.
The gift of a Montessori school is that it gives the child the Universe. The gift of a Catholic Montessori is that the child also meets the Author.
* * *
With outstretched arms, a young student held out her work in front of her face, bouncing slightly as she rocked back and forth; up to her toes and down again. My silence pulling at her curiosity, she raised her arms, and tilting her head to see under the golden edges of her paper, she peered up at my face. Her inquiring eyes begged a response.
Bending down and taking the paper in my fingertips I whispered, "Can you tell me about it?" Shoulder to shoulder, she began to explain. Her finger gently traced a large figure hovering at the top of the paper: "Well, this is Jesus." Trailing her finger slowly down, she continued, "...And then He gets smaller and smaller and smaller." With the repetition of her words, her hands began spinning over top of each other, slowly at first, but at an ever-increasing speed. Faster and faster. And when her hands could not spin anymore, her excitement welled up from within, proclaiming, "Until POOF! He is there! Inside! Just for ME!!" And with a hop, and a satisfied grin, her story was finished.
* * *
You and I, as teachers, parents, catechists, and friends are privileged to tell these grand stories. But, we are also called to be the hands and feet of Christ here on this earth; the hands and feet of the Author.
I looked over at her face, all full of light, and knew she had met the Author; an Author who is Love. That she had seen the grand story... a glorious picture born out of love, for love, and in love. He had taken her by the hand and shown her the role she played in this Divine story. Everything inside me ached at the beauty of that moment. At the privilege of being part of a Catholic Montessori school, part of this Divine story, and an instrument in the story of this child as well; to be Christ's feet walking and His hands leading this child day by day here on this earth.
