The Good Shepherd Catholic Montessori is dedicated to providing an outstanding education to children ages three to fourteen in a Catholic atmosphere faithful to the Magesterium of the Church. Using the philosophy and techniques of the Montessori approach, including religious education through the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, our goal is to enable each child to develop as a well-integrated human being:  spiritually, intellectually, socially, physically, and emotionally

Backtotop

If we pray, then we will believe.

if we believe, then we will love -

because the fruit of Faith is love,

and the fruit of love is service.

If we want to deepen our Faith,

we must deepen our oneness with Christ.

Without seeing him we pray to him,

we turn to him, we cling to him,

we love him without seeing him.

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta

Thurs., Nov. 6, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Pre-primary and elementary parents are invited to spend an evening in the classroom with their child during our upcoming Parent-Child Evenings.  One of the most relaxing and enjoyable parent education opportunities, this is an evening for listening to your child and exploring the fascinating Montessori environment together.  Please come and experience the interest and joy of your child's learning in the Montessori classroom.

Although our teachers will be on hand, the focus is on parent-child interactions and the evening is not intended as a time to conference with teachers.

Student Comments on Home Projects

We were happy to receive these comments from our middle school students regarding their participation in the September home projects on the virtue of faith.

·         I learned more about the Holy Spirit.  I learned the Holy Spirit gives us knowledge of the Son.  I still think the Holy Spirit is the most confusing person of the Holy Trinity, but I will pray to understand better.

·         Praying the rosary was wonderful and was nice to do it more often and not only 1-2 times a year.

·         I realized while I was doing this, that the Nicene Creed relates to the Holy Trinity.

·         It was nice to pray the rosary more than once a year at May Crowning and really get to learn what it's about.

·         I feel like memorizing this (Nicene Creed) helped my family and me grow closer together and to God.

·         We spent a lot of time talking about our faith and how it affects our life and how other people's faith affects us and our life in big and small ways (parent).

·         A statement that I found interesting (Nicene Creed) was "I believe in the forgiveness of sins" which means not only for God but for each other.

·         We say these (Nicene Creed) in the Episcopal Church as well (parent comment).

·         I went to Eucharistic Adoration with a friend.  Being with a friend during Adoration made me feel more comfortable in the environment.

·         I liked the effort of us having to do one of these projects.  It really helps people grow in their faith.

·         It took a bit of time to memorize the prayer (Nicene Creed) but I now am glad I got to reflect on it.

Deep Discussions in Upper Elementary

By LinMarie Cameron, Upper Elementary History Teacher

This year, we are studying the history of the ancient world-Mesopotamia, Egypt, Israel, Greece, and Rome.  My lessons often transform into philosophical discussions as the students raise questions and make connections.

Recently, we were learning about mummification and the Egyptian ideas of the afterlife which sustained that practice. The Egyptians gave special treatment to the heart, wrapping it separately in linen and covering it with a protective amulet, because they believed it would be weighed at the person's judgment. If it was heavy with sin, the heart was tossed to the Devourer; only if it was as light as the Feather of Truth would the person pass on to paradise.

A student raised the question of what really did happen to the person's soul, since we know that the Egyptian gods aren't real.  This led into a great discussion of the existence of truth, how all people search for truth, and that some truth is to be found in all religions. The Egyptians may have had imaginative details, but the essence of this scene is true-each person will be judged on how he lived his life. Our study of history fosters philosophy, the love of wisdom, as our students seek to learn from the lives of those who came before.

Parent-Teacher Conference Scheduling

It is time to schedule your parent-teacher conference.  Conference schedules are posted by individual teachers click here.  Please schedule your conference by going to the link and then selecting your child's teacher.

Please remember that children may not be left unattended on the school grounds while parents are attending their conference.  Spaces in Aftercare in the St. Joseph house may be reserved for students while parents are in conferences at a rate of $5 per half hour per student. Please call the office to reserve space.

Fire Pit

Our 8th Grade Class of 2014 gave a fire pit to our school as their class gift.  The students had many fond memories of the bonding they experienced around the campfires on their annual Odyssey Trips and wanted that experience to be available to the rest of our school.  The fire pit is located near the middle school garden.

Teachers will use the fire pit for supervised activities from time to time.  If you do not want your child to participate in these activities, please notify your child's teacher and also send an email to Mrs. Toon, who will keep a list of any children not permitted to participate in fire pit activities.  Please note that the fire pit has a locking cover and is only used with staff supervision.

Dress Code Reminder

Please note that per our dress code, shorts are no longer permitted at school as of November 1.  Shorts may be worn again after April 1.

Please Drive Safely

Dear Parents and Staff, please remember to keep the speed limit of no more than 10mph on the school grounds at all times  We just want everyone to be safe.  Thank you

PTO Handbook and Family Directory

Each family should have received a PTO Handbook/Directory by backpack mail with their youngest child at GSCM.  Please take a moment to check your information in the directory and if there is something wrong, please let the office know.  Also if you move, change an email, etc., please let the office know and the corrections/additions will be posted in the newsletter so that families may correct their directory.

Landscaping Thanks

Special thanks to GSCM parent Randy Adkins and his company, Green Turf LawnScapes, for their work to landscape the south side of the St. Joseph House.  They removed overgrown and unsightly growth and planted new bushes which will grow into an attractive border for this side of the building.

Free Tables

We recently replaced our tables in the middle school's humanities classroom.  We have five round wooden tables available for free.  They are approximately four feet in diameter and have a mahogany/cherry color to the tops.  They are in fair condition and can be viewed in the garage.  If interested, please see Dan Teller by November 3, when we will post them to give away via Craig's List.
