Students Use Interactive Simulations to Explore Scientific Phenomenon
By John Bennett, Middle School Science Teacher
If a picture says a thousand words, how many words are said in an interactive, moving, computer simulation? Our students are using computer simulations in math and science class to supplement labs, lectures, and readings. These simulations demonstrate physical phenomenon in a manner that is fun, interactive, and free!
My Solar System
In one simulation, called "My Solar System," students explore the orbits of planets, comets, moons, and stars. What if the sun was twice as large? What if the initial velocity of the planet was doubled? This simulation allows students to explore the forces involved in creating an orbit while gaining better understanding of Newton's laws of gravity. (this is fun for ALL ages): http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/my-solar-system
Energy Skate Park
In this simulation, students learn about the relationship of kinetic energy, potential energy, and total mechanical energy. Students are able to adjust variables like the slope of the ramp, coefficient of friction, or even which planet on which the skate park is located. http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/energy-skate-park
Each simulation has many labs for middle school, high school, and undergraduate math and science students. In addition to being fun, the labs create durable learning experiences for students by controlling for variables in a simulated environment. The results are clearly shown in test performances and classroom discussions following our labs.
For more simulations, go to: http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/category/new.

Easy Way to Support GSCM
Is your family registered for the Kroger Community Rewards program? If so, thank you! Then you are one of approximately 29 families whose participation in this program results in a check of nearly $800 per quarter from Kroger to GSCM. If not, we are asking for your help to reach our goal of increasing participation to three times its current rate. Imagine that . . . earning money for GSCM just by doing something that you already do, purchasing groceries at Krogers. Proceeds from this program help support staff development financial aid. Don't forget, you have to renew your charity of choice yearly.
Check out the "Community Rewards" booth at the carnival!
While your children are having fun and enjoying time with their friends, you will have a few moments to yourself to complete the easy registration on a school laptop or even your own smartphone. Many of you probably already have a Kroger account, so it is a few simple steps to select GSCM as your charity of choice. If you need to create an account, be ready to provide an email address, pass code, zip code and Kroger Plus Card number. Someone will be there to assist you.
Information will also be available about "Target's Take Charge of Education Program" and "Amazon Smile."
