The Good Shepherd Catholic Montessori is dedicated to providing an outstanding education to children ages three to fourteen in a Catholic atmosphere faithful to the Magesterium of the Church. Using the philosophy and techniques of the Montessori approach, including religious education through the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, our goal is to enable each child to develop as a well-integrated human being:  spiritually, intellectually, socially, physically, and emotionally

The first idea that the child must acquire, in order to be actively disciplined, is that of the difference between good and evil; and the task of the educator lies in seeing that the child does not confound good with immobility, and evil with activity ...

Our aim is to discipline for activity, for work, for good; not for immobility, not for passivity ... A room in which all the children move about usefully, intelligently, and voluntarily, without committing any rough or rude act, would seem to me a classroom very well disciplined indeed.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Parent Evening: Tues., Dec. 4, 7:00-8:30

How do children learn in the atrium? How do they work? How do they pray?

Have you wondered what your child does in the atrium? What is presented? What work do children use? How do they use it? How does all this help the child grow closer to God? How do the children learn and understand basic beliefs? How can the atrium serve both Catholic and non-Catholic children?

Catechist Dan Teller will present a variety of atrium materials to help you better understand the atrium experience for children of all ages. The atrium experience is not only a gift to children - it is also a gift for adults who experience it. It is a conversion experience. Please join us at our CGS Parent Evening to gain insights about, and most of all, to ENJOY the beauty and depth of the atrium experience. The evening is suitable for parents of all children at our school.

Please RSVP to  dteller@gscmontessori.org. Grandparents and non-GSCM parents are welcome as well. RSVP is needed to ensure adequate interest to offer this evening program.

Science Fair

Join us for a Celebration: Friday, December 7th 5:00-7:00pm

Inquiry is a method of teaching science that employs hands-on and critical thinking skills. It enables students to learn about science the way a scientist would. Science Inquiry and the scientific method will be demonstrated through a diverse array of experiments.  You will see a wide range of projects like Can you train a cat?  Is a yawn contagious? and Where does mold grow best?

Come see science inquiry at its best. Please join GSCM students as they exhibit their science projects for the community on Friday December, 7 from 5:00-7:00 pm. Students will be displaying their individual projects from 9-12 and middle school and the 6-9 students will have class projects for all to view as well.

Mission Alive

[From "Beginning Reading Instruction, Practical Ideas for Parents]

"Parents, your children's success as learners rests on their ability to read well. Learning to read is a process that takes time and effort...You are your children's first and most influential teachers. Teaching and learning happen when you and your young children do simple, fun things at home."

Helping your children at home . . .

READING ALOUD and OTHER ACTIVITIES

Set aside a special time each day to read aloud to your children.

Read stories and informational books aloud for as long as you can read and your children can listen. If your children become restless, lay the book aside and come back to it at another time.

Read stories to your children and have them tell the stories back to you.

Have your children "read" to you from a picture book by making up their own stories about the pictures.

Take nature walks in the neighborhood or at local parks. Spend time talking in detail with your children about things you can see, hear, or touch such as leaves, rain, and caterpillars.

When possible, take your children on trips to zoos, museums, nature trails, and historical sites. Talk about the interesting and unusual things you see.

Draw pictures with your children and take turns telling stories about the pictures.

Pick a topic of interest to your children and have them learn new things about it. Ask them to tell you and other family members what they have learned.

Year of Faith

Year of Faith Logo

The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith" (Lk 17:5)

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH ON FAITH...

Faith is a grace

When St. Peter confessed that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, Jesus declared to him that this revelation did not come "from flesh and blood", but from "my Father who is in heaven". Faith is a gift of God, a supernatural virtue infused by him. "Before this faith can be exercised, man must have the grace of God to move and assist him; he must have the interior helps of the Holy Spirit, who moves the heart and converts it to God, who opens the eyes of the mind and 'makes it easy for all to accept and believe the truth.'"

Faith is a human act

Believing is possible only by grace and the interior helps of the Holy Spirit. But it is no less true that believing is an authentically human act. Trusting in God and cleaving to the truths he has revealed is contrary neither to human freedom nor to human reason. Even in human relations it is not contrary to our dignity to believe what other persons tell us about themselves and their intentions, or to trust their promises (for example, when a man and a woman marry) to share a communion of life with one another. If this is so, still less is it contrary to our dignity to "yield by faith the full submission of. . . intellect and will to God who reveals", and to share in an interior communion with him.

Thursday Morning Moms Group

From GSCM Mission Statement: "(Our goal is to enable each child to develop as a well-integrated human being: spiritually, intellectually, socially, physically, and emotionally."

We all want to see our children flourish - to become the best version of themselves - all that God as created them to be. What a wonderful school we have that seeks to attain such a lofty vision!

Do you ever wonder if there is more that you can be doing to help achieve this great goal? I have! Over the years, I have been concerned as to whether or not I could properly nourish my children's physicaldevelopment. At times, I've been afraid that the choices I make now might actually hinder them from reaching their full potential. However, for the past 6 years, I've read, studied and trained and now would like to share what I've learned, as well as get the support of other GSCM Moms.

If you share my zeal for our children's proper physical development (as well as our own!) would you please consider joining me at my new support group? I'm calling it "Thursday Morning Moms" and am covering a variety of topics, from digestion & hormones, to snacks & menu planning.

Our first meeting with be on Thurs., Dec. 6, from 9-11 am at my home. If you would like more information or to sign up, please contact me at: 513-386-7523 or esodergren@catholic.org.

I look forward to meeting you!

God Bless,

Ellie Sodergren
