What's up with that??
I just noticed a large vertical crack in the trunk of my maple tree - on the southwest side.
T his is undoubtedly a frost crack which happened last winter and was probably visible in spring but just wasn't noticed then. It has become much more obvious recently because the trunk is slowly increasing in diameter - and even more so because of all the recent moisture available. For some ideas on what to do read this: Frost Crack and Sunscald
We carry and recommend paper tree wrap for newly planted and thin-barked trees such as Maple, Honeylocust, Beech, and Cherry. It should be applied around the time of fall leaf drop and removed the following spring.
- Help! My evergreens are suddenly dropping massive numbers of brown needles. Are they dying?
NO! This is absolutely normal for this time of year. Evergreens shed their oldest needles (which are in the inside or center portion of the tree) every year around this time. If the needles on the tips of the branches are still green this is not a problem. You don't need to do anything other than pick up the brown needles if you don't like the look.
