Faces from the Trail
|
Soon, we'll have a new set of faces working to offer bike rentals, mechanical support and assistance to users of the Virginia Capital Trail. Craig Dodson's awesome non-profit, Richmond Cycling Corps is expanding to include an operation called "Kickstand" along RVA's Riverfront where the Lehigh Cement silos used to be. Be on the lookout for a couple shipping containers that will house the bikes and other gear. His youth, all from public housing, will be the employees. This is so great!
See you on the Trail!

We're excited to announce a new collaboration between Henrico Police Department's bike patrol officers and our VCTF Trail Ambassador program. These two groups are meeting to share everything from ideas to schedules to insure extra safety for trail users along the Henrico portions.
Speaking of Trail Ambassadors, here are the latest stats for April and May:
Totals:
Number of patrols: 58
Number of hours: 124
Number of miles: 1,262
What do our Ambassadors do on these patrols? These volunteers are out enjoying the trail themselves, but if they encounter anyone who needs help of any kind, they're there to offer it. They have their phone, a first aid kit, knowledge of the trail and nearby amenities, and in some cases they can offer mechanical help if they have that ability. On a recent patrol, one of our new and very kind ambassadors -- welcome John Titus! -- offered a thirsty walker his water. How cool is that?
T hey also pick up litter, report any maintenance issues and act as eyes and ears for the VCTF. This group is growing and we're proud of what they're bringing to the trail experience. If you're interested in being a part of this group, email info@virginiacapitaltrail.org and we'll get you connected with the appropriate team leader for your area.

Cyclists vs. Pedestrians -- The Safety Scoop
|
Cyclists make up 73% of the total counts along the trail. However, at Herring Creek, pedestrians account for 62% of total counts. This surprises us, but it's good information to know.
Herring Creek is just inside the western edge of the Charles City County line, which is one of the more rural sections of the trail.
To our cyclists who like to go fast, remember there are walkers out there, even in those areas where you may feel more isolated.
For cyclists and pedestrians:
- Be aware and please share. - Stay to the right, pass on the left - Alert anyone in front that you will be passing on the left - Courtesy goes a long way towards safety
