Faces from the Trail

This is Ms. Josephine Biggers, the 99-year old Varina resident and daily trail user who became a local Facebook sensation when we posted this picture of her and got almost 400 likes. Even NBC12 News picked up on the activity and wrote an article about her.  Why did she resonate so widely with our community?

I love that she loves the trail and that it's a big part of her life. I like that she proves the trail really is for all ages and abilities. I like that she was out there on a cold day in her hat, gloves, and coat with a big smile.  What do you love about Ms. Biggers?

See you on the trail!

A couple Cap2Cap FAQ's:

Q:    Is this a race?
A:    No.  It's a ride, to be completed at a pace
comfortable to you.  Of course, we want you finish in
plenty of time to enjoy the whole experience, which
includes lunch, beverages, bands, and a vendor
        expo.

Q:    How can all 2,400 riders fit on the Trail?
A:     Each distance will start on the road, with the first
mile closed to car traffic.  Once riders have had a
chance to thin out, the trail will become an option
several miles later.  The backroads are roads we've
        used in previous Cap2Caps.

Q:    Are we required to use the Trail when it's available?
A:    No.  But we strongly encourage its use.  Your safety is
        important to us.

Q:   Are there any distances that are completely on the
       Trail?
A:   Yes, the 15-mile Fun Ride, which starts and ends at
the Courthouse. The route heads west and turns
around at the Herring Creek Trailhead.

Q:  Will the trail be open to the public?
A:  Yes.  We hope riders will abide by trail (& road) rules --
single file, stay to the right, and pass on the left.

Q:   What is the password for my complimentary beer on
       ride day?
A:    HEY MOM! CAN WE GET SOME MEATLOAF?

Have you ordered your 2016 ride jersey?  This year's design is perfect -- bold yet subdued, and best of all, you will look great in it!

Riding a bike not your thing?  Join us as a volunteer!  We'll give you a cool T-shirt, lunch if you work the noontime shift, and 2400 people will thank you for making the VCU Health Cap2Cap their best day ever!

Thank you to all our generous sponsors!

Volunteer Spotlight

We're sad to be saying goodbye to Bob Holdsworth, a loyal and hardworking volunteer for many years.
Whenever we put out a call for help, he was always the first to respond.  We're so grateful for his devotion and passion for the cause.  We'll miss you Bob but wish you well in your next chapter!
Trail Ambassadors and Williamsburg Area Bicyclists (WAB) -- Rockstars!
Members of the Trail Ambassador group partnered with WAB and cleaned up 26 miles of the eastern sections of the Trail last Sunday.  Thank you!  According to Ted Hanson, coordinator of the effort, "I've never worked with such willing and 'wanting to do' ambassadors and WAB members.  What great folks to be associated with!"
We couldn't agree more!  These people picked up car tires, carpeting, and a whole lot of beer cans -- 36 trash bags worth of garbage. Wow.

Inside Scoop

* There's a new convenience store, Momma Lonnie's, near mile marker 36 along the Trail, at the intersection of Rt. 5 & 156.

* If you need to drop your car somewhere in Varina, the owner of Hawthorne Cleaners in Varina (across from the 7-11 at the Osborne split) is happy to have trail users park in her lot. Just leave the spots near the door available for her customers. PS - She'd love to meet you if they're open.

* Upper Shirley Vineyards is open!  Located near mile marker 30. Go for the wine and/or food.  It's a truly spectacular experience.

TIP - Trail users are welcome but encouraged to take their cleats off before stomping on the gorgeous hardwoods.
