Cap2Cap Composure
I usually use this space for exciting and happy news about the Virginia Capital Trail. At the risk of walking into a minefield, however, this time I'm on a rant.
When we recently debriefed with our law-enforcement and first-responder partners after the May 9 Cap2Cap, several of them reported seeing registered riders, as they pedaled throughout the day, make offensive gestures to cars and other riders. Where to begin?
First, if this was you, don't sign up next year. The Cap2Cap is where supporters of this awesome trail project come together to have fun, ride a bike, and be supportive.
As important as this fundraiser is, and even as we hope to grow participation in the years to come, this kind of rider is not welcome.
We are very aware that putting 2,400 riders on 200 miles of open roads for 8 hours creates many challenges. We have law enforcement, EMS, volunteers, and staff working very hard to minimize the ride's impact on the community and keep everyone safe. We depend on approvals from four localities to be able to use their roads, and when we hear reports of this kind of behavior, we worry about the ride's future, in addition to feeling profoundly embarrassed.
This organization won't solve the car-bike tension that exists in the region. But we will do everything we can, including banning riders from the Cap2Cap, to preserve our reputation and that of our event.
There, end of rant. Scroll down to read about all the good things that happened at Cap2Cap 2015. It was a great day.

Rocketts Landing Cap2Cap 2015: Fun Stats from a Fun Day
Nearly 2,400 enthusiastic riders joined together for a great day on May 9, raising over $130,000 for the VCTF. The Sands Anderson Half Century, the 25-Miler Presented by Busch Gardens, and the 15-mile Fun Ride swelled to record numbers, as did the number of riders starting from the Williamsburg venue. This is a beautiful thing!

Rider Survey:
93% of you had a great day and plan to return next year. If you rode and haven't yet given us your feedback, here's the link to our 2015 Rider Survey. We read it all, and pore over the comments from those who may not have had such a great day, and use it to make next year's ride even better.
Finally and Most Importantly:
We owe our success to our generous sponsors, hardworking and dedicated volunteers, partners, and our riders. A great ride requires big commitments from all of these groups, and the Cap2Cap has been fortunate to have had a loyal following for ten years. People and businesses who come back year after year, putting their energy, enthusiasm, and trust in this event, are our greatest asset, and a sign of deep community support. Everyone is excited about the Virginia Capital Trail project and what it means to them, whether it be a safe place to exercise for riders and walkers, economic impact for localities, or a great quality of life, which employers and communities are always seeking. Thank you all for ten years of growth and success. Save the Date!
