Wheeeee!
Where did you learn to ride a bike? I learned on a sidewalk in front of my house when I was a youngster in Colorado. I still remember that moment when it clicked and I was pedaling ahead without anyone's help. Talk about a thrill. Right?
Since we've begun to feel the sun a little more, I've noticed a lot more riders throughout the region. They seem to be emerging this year in bigger numbers than ever before.

This year's 10th anniversary Cap2Cap is looking like a big beneficiary of this growing community. With three weeks left in pre-registration, our 15-Mile Family Fun ride has more people already signed up than it had on ride day last year. And our overall numbers are way ahead of where we were on this date in 2014. While it's always a draw for century riders looking for an early training ride, the Cap2Cap appeals to regular people and families who have re-discovered over the last couple of years, the thrill of riding a bike.
What brought them back? It's a combination of safe places to ride and programs or events introducing them those places. As more events encourage people of all ages and abilities to enjoy a trail or an organized ride, the knowledge that these places are accessible to everyone begins to spread. Grownups get out there with kids literally in tow. Then everyone feels the thrill.
And when that happens, you know the evolution will continue. Which, for the region and the Cap2Cap, is a really good thing.
Hope to see you on May 9!

- Memphis, TN. City Councilman Reid Hedgepeth was an outspoken opponent of the proposed paved, 6.5 mile Shelby Farms Greenline because he feared it would bring crime. Now that the Greenline is complete, he says, "I tell people all the time that I've never been so wrong in my life." Additionally, his family is out "walking and riding on it every day."
