What's Going on with the Trail?
|
Here is an updated completion timeline:
Sherwood Forest Section: Spring 2014
New Market Heights Section: Spring/Summer 2014 Varina Section: Summer/Fall 2014 Varina Park Section: Spring 2015 Downtown Richmond: June 2014 What else are we working on?
The VCTF is currently involved in creating an amenity master plan, to include everything that will be installed along the Virginia Capital Trail, once complete. This will include signage, benches, bike racks, rain shelters, trail counters and other items to enhance the trail experience. We have funding from a Federal Enhancement grant for this, which requires a 20% match that we will be working to raise from things like the Cap2Cap event, donations and community receptions. Stay tuned for details as our plan takes shape.
We also are close to breaking ground on the Shiplock Park project, which will give trail users a great spot to begin and end the trail experience in downtown Richmond. Given the projections of 400,000 visitors a year in the near term, then climbing closer to 1 million per year as promotional efforts yield returns, we recognize the importance of needing to make a great impression on those using the Trail to travel to Richmond. The park will include the electronic kiosk currently in use at our Jamestown trailhead, with Richmond specific content on where to go and what to see. Thanks to a group of very generous donors, we're able to create a place along the riverfront where people will want to come and relax, as well as explore. We're hoping for an August/September ribbon cutting where you will be invited to come and enjoy our gift to the city, and to future users of the Virginia Capital Trail.
For now, we're focused on Saturday, May 11, when we will treat Cap2Cap riders to a great day of pedaling in support of our beloved Trail.
Hope to see you there!
