President's Message
By Sue Manley
I hope you all have had the chance to review the PTA's budget amendment proposals and have completed the survey monkey membership vote. If you haven't yet, please take a moment to let your opinion be known. Click Here For Survey
We are very fortunate to be once again considering options for spending excess income that was raised this year. We would very much like to thank all of you who have supported the PTA and especially thank our finance committee who have done an incredible job finding ways for all of us to contribute. If you see Beth Clark, AnnMarie Lobred or Deana Collier, please make sure to thank them for all the work they've done and continue to do. One of my favorite Spirit Nights is coming soon, "Run the Diner". I hope our teachers have been practicing making milk shakes.
One way our finance committee made it easy for us to raise funds this year was through the Kroger Plus Card for Eduction Program. This year's program which ran through the end of March allowed the Shady Grove PTA to provide the following:
For Library:
Mobile Book Truck
Canon PowerShot camera
For Music:
Boomwhackers C Major Scale Set
15 pc Multi-instrument Classroom Set
For P.E.:
Set of Volt 8.5" Playground Balls
Set of Volt Specialty Tuff Balls
Thank you to everyone who registered your Kroger Plus card to benefit the Shady Grove PTA.
As the end of the year approaches and the PTA looks to consider what purchases can be made with excess income, I ask you to let me know any thoughts or suggestions you may have.
Sue Manley

Fundraising
Please join us for the "Run the Diner" Fundraiser at Silver Diner on Thursday, April 18, 2013, from 5-8 pm. Enjoy a delicious dinner while our very own Shady Grove teachers and staff host, seat, and bus tables to help raise money for our school. For your purchases that night, Shady Grove receives 10%.
For Shady Grove to raise even more money on our purchases, please bring your Eat Well Do Well card. If you do not have one, the card is FREE and works like a grocery store cad to use while paying. By having your EWDW card swiped while linked to Shady Grove, our school earns an additional 5% on every sale that night. There will be a table set up in the front lobby of the restaurant so you can sign up for the Free EWDW card. If you have an EWDW card or sign up for one, we will provide you with a $10 coupon, good toward a $20 purchase, to use that night or another night. As a bonus of having a card, you can prepay online any time at silverdiner.com and Shady Grove will receive another 5%. For those of you that have a card, and for those that will be signing up for one, please take advantage of this perk to earn more money for our school. We wanted to let you know that the Silver Diner menu now includes many nutritious and delicious options to their menu. They buy fresh and local veggies, fruits, organic meats, and whole grains whenever possible. Thank you in advance for supporting your PTA.The Silver Diner is located at 10890 West Broad Street Glen Allen, VA 23060 (804) 346-2020

SCA Math-A-ThonThe SCA sponsored St. Jude Math-A-Thon has begun! All the money raised will go directly to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to benefit the children who are patients there. In many of the previous years, Shady Grove raised thousands of dollars for this worthy cause! Our goal this year is to have every student in the school participate. The amount of a donation doesn't have to be large--every dollar helps in the fight to find the cure for cancer! This year's Math-A-Thon runs through Friday, May 3rd.
Curious to know more about Math-A-Thon or Saint Jude Childrens Research Hospital? Check out their website at: www.mathathon.org/ for more details.

ProgramsIn the past month we have had many exciting programs take place. We have had a show about Ancient African Story Tellers. We had the Virginia Opera come in and entertain us with The Pirates of Penzance, and this past Friday, April 11th, the 2nd grade was charmed by the grace of the Chinese Acrobats. We had hoped that the Richmond Symphony would be able to come entertain the 4th & 5th grade but their schedule and our's are not able to line up. The Cultural Arts Committee has completed its programs for this school year and are very excited to see what the 2013/2014 school year brings. Thank you so much to all the parents who made this year's Cultural Arts Programs possible.
