By Sue Manley
The nominating committee has been voted on and is compiling the job descriptions and needs of leadership for next year's SGES PTA.  Thank you to Carrie Sweeney, Cheryl Bemis, Deirdre Belden, Meghan Gemmill and Renee Kreiser for giving their time and leadership to this important committee.  In the coming weeks, job descriptions and nomination forms will be made available for you to nominate yourself or someone you may know that can help lead our successful PTA.  We have many important positions to fill this year including:

Treasurer
Programs
Communications
County Council
Lay Advisory
After School Enrichment
Hospitality
Outdoor Classroom
School Store
Yearbook

Out for public comment this month is the draft 3 proposed school calendar for the 2013-2014 school year.  This latest draft has two adjustments; the day before Thanksgiving is now a holiday and the half-day in December was eliminated. Please provide any feedback to Dr. Patrick Kinlaw.
Comments are due by Wednesday, February 20.

Plans are already being made to ensure the opening of the new elementary school, Kaechele, will be a huge success.  Shady Grove will be hosting a Meet and Greet session with the new principal, Cindy Patterson on Tuesday, February 26th from 6:30 to 7:30.  The PTA will provide refreshments.  If you are unable to attend on Tuesday, a Meet and Greet will also be taking place at Colonial Trail ES on Feb. 25 from 6:30 to 8:30.

On January 31, 2013, HCPS and Henrico Police came together to host the county's first Safety and Security Community Forum. School and police leaders shared details on safety procedures.  Click HERE to read the community feedback from that session.  SGES PTA is addressing several areas of concern including purchasing more walkie-talkies for our teachers and increasing the number of volunteers at the school during the morning arrival time.  Please consider volunteering to help with Morning Drop Off or Welcome Desk.   Just click on the links above to add your name to our nList roster of volunteers.

Don't forget to nominate
your VA Super Teacher by Wed., February 20th.
Programs
Don't miss our Comedy Magic Show with Michael Douglas on February 21, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the Shady Grove Gym.

Admission:  a new or gently used children's book, to be donated to the Children's Museum of Richmond book drive.  Share the magic of reading with kids in our area who may not have books of their own.

We will be giving away great door prizes for the kids, and you must be present to win.

2013 Teacher of the Year

We are pleased to announce that Mrs. Lisa Blouch, our school librarian, has been selected by the staff as Shady Grove's Teacher of the Year. We are delighted to recognize Mrs. Blouch with this well-deserved award. She will represent Shady Grove at the district level and will be honored at an awards ceremony and reception on May 8. Please join us in congratulating Mrs. Blouch!

Cultural Arts
We had a great start to the month of February with Theatre IV and Rivanna Music coming in to entertain and educate our Cardinals. The enjoyment will continue with another Theatre IV presentation on February 22nd where our first and second grades will be learning a little about Ancient Egypt.

On February 20th,  Young Audiences is coming in with their "Magic of Reading" presentation as a reward for all those classes from Kindergarten to Grade 5 with the greatest amount of Cardinal Donors.
Thomas B. Fernald Scholarship
The 2013 Thomas B. Fernald Scholarship Application is now available.  High School Seniors who attended Shady Grove may apply.  The deadline for application submission is March 29. Henrico County High Schools have  applications available and it is also available on the Shady Grove PTA website.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this year's SGES Rock-A-Thon which raised over $6,700!  The proceeds from this fun community event are used to fund this opportunity for our rising stars in our community.

Any questions regarding the scholarship may be sent
to Sue Manley.

Silent Auction
The SGES Silent Auction will be held at the End Of Year Picnic on May 16th to help raise funds for a Book Room in our school.  Our goal is to raise $20,000 to complete a K-5 Book Room.

We need your help to support this cause!
Some examples of donations may include: services, products, vacation homes, tickets, handmade or bought items, or monetary donations.  As a donor to our event, you will be listed in our Program Guide and mentioned on our Silent Auction Facebook page.

Please consider showing Shady Grove's friends and neighbors your company's commitment to quality education by becoming a sponsor.  By sponsoring, you will be promoting your company to over 600 families as well as showing your support for our community and educational success.

Shady Grove PTA is a non-profit organization; therefore your donation is fully tax deductible.

Visit our Silent Auction Page for donation forms and to see the various levels of sponsorship.
Attention Car Riders:
We are greatly in need of more parent volunteers at the drop off loop.  Please consider taking at least one shift a month if you are a parent that drives your child to school regularly.  The shift is from 7:20-7:40am.  Our school greatly appreciates the time parents take to volunteer at the drop-off loop, ensuring a safe and efficient drop-off system at Shady Grove.  For more information, please contact Erika Arnason.
