President's Message
By Sue Manley
Happy Veterans' Day! I know we all share a deep appreciation and great respect for our Armed Forces past and present. My sons always look forward to the Veteran's Day Assembly and I hope everyone in our community who has served is able to share this special time with our Cardinals on Monday, Nov. 12th at 8:30 and 9:30 am.
At the PTA board meeting this past Thursday we reviewed several items the PTA has been asked to acquire. The board voted to amend our 2012-2013 budget to include expenditures of $150 toward the purchase of walkie-talkies to use during recess for the safety of our children and $800 toward the purchase of an iPad charging cart for the STEM lab to ensure our investment is secure and fully utilized. We are currently looking into funding a surface for the gaga pit and installation of a basketball hoop on the upper blacktop. If anyone knows of a contractor, preferably approved to work for HCPS, who would be willing to work with us on these projects, please e-mail me.
These PTA expenditures would not have been possible without your continued support. At this time, I'd like to thank Beth Clark and AnnMarie Lobred. As VPs of finance they organize all our fundraising and spirit nights. Thank you for your tireless work and your creative ideas. Because of your fundraising, we are able to provide programs and support in our school. And thank you, Shady Grove families. Your generosity is the major reason why our PTA has success.
Finally, please remember to review the newly revised bylaws which have been posted on the website. The majority of the changes were mandated by the VAPTA including the lowering of the threshold for general membership votes to amend the budget from $1,000 to $300. We don't anticipate this to have much affect except when we spend excess funds at the end of a fiscal year. The revised bylaws will need to be voted on by a show of hands by a quorum of the general membership at the end of the 30-day review period on Nov. 21st and before the deadline of Nov. 27th. Look for an e-mail blast calling for your attendance at a vote on Nov. 26th.

Principal's Message By Dr. Schwab
Parent Coffee Invitation
Please join us for the Parent Coffee on Friday, November 30 at 8:30 am in the cafeteria. The focus for this session will be on Shady Grove's SOL Waiver and the instructional initiatives related to it. We look forward to providing you with a look at ways in which we are working to increase rigor, relevance, and student engagement in the curriculum!
Traffic Safety Reminder
Our front loop is a busy place in the mornings with parents and students arriving both in cars and on foot. Therefore, we ask drivers to focus their complete attention on maintaining safety for the children while on campus. This includes driving slowly around the loop, following the directions on the signage, and delaying cell phone use until you have exited the grounds. Thank you for your support!

Barnes & Noble Spirit Night
The holidays are nearly here. Please mark your calendar to join us for a spirited evening at our yearly Short Pump Barnes and Noble Spirit Night
on December 5th! Bring the whole family to hear bedtime stories from our Shady Grove teachers as well as a performance from our Mr. Brady's drum group, Syncopations, while you shop for holiday gifts.
No time for dinner beforehand? No problem. Barnes and Noble serves pizza and sandwiches for a quick pick up dinner. Shady Grove will receive 10% back on both food and book purchases that night, as well as 5% back on all digital purchases.
We are looking for a few volunteers to help with our event; please email Beth Clark today. Thank you.

Redistricting Update
Now we know the name of the new school, Kaechele Elementary, but we still don't know who will be going there. The redistricting committee met with the school board on Nov. 8th to present three options. One was eliminated due to funding changes and the remaining two options are being tweaked to find the best possible solution for all Henrico residents. How do the maps effect current SGES students? Map 1 as it stands does not move any existing SGES kids out of SGES, but does include Dominion Hills as part of our family. Map 2 as it was presented does move SGES families (Kimberwicke, Cross Creek, Hampton Forest and West Chase). We would relieve Rivers Edge some of their subdivisions (Dominion Hills and Shady Ridge). Mark your calendars for December 6, 6-8 pm at Hermitage High School there will be an open comment forum to the school BOARD -- prior to that possible maps will be put on the Redistricting website for the public to review and prepare suggestions and comments. The board will take it to a final vote on Dec. 13.

Pop Top Update
The PTA would like to thank Mrs. Daniels, our Kindergarten teacher who graciously agreed to take over the collection of Pop Top's for the Ronald McDonald House. Shady Grove has donated over 500 lbs. of Pop Tops to the Richmond Ronald McDonald house and we are very proud to have helped keep the lights on for this amazing charity.
