The Missouri House may soon consider SB 350, a bill that would repeal the renter's portion of the senior citizens property tax credit. Read this alert and then contact your State Representative and urge defeat of SB 350.
Currently, this tax credit is available to renters who are elderly (65 or older) or disabled and who have household incomes of $27,500 or less if single, or $29,500 or less if married. Over 104,000 Missourians from every corner of Missouri currently receive this credit, which averages $534 annually.
Proponents of SB 350 want to repeal the credit and create a government program to assist the elderly and disabled. This simply creates more government bureaucracy while hurting the poor.
Those who work with the poor and help them with their tax returns (like the Samaritan Center in Jefferson City) know how much this renters' credit helps the poor to make ends meet so they can live in some dignity.
