Clarification on "Sandy Hook" Article
In our article yesterday "Sandy Hook - How Do We Respond?", which was in the MCC Capitol Update, we inadvertently referred to "semi-automatic weapons." These weapons are used for hunting and are not a part of the discussion concerning regulating lethal weapons such as military assault rifles. Keep in mind that in yesterday's article we were raising questions, not taking definitive positions at this time. The MCC is exploring how to respond to gun violence such as what happened at Sandy Hook and we invite your input. A bill has been filed in the Missouri General Assembly that would allow teachers to carry concealed weapons into the classroom. The legislation is sponsored by Rep. Mike Kelley (R-Lamar). The legislation has garnered quite a number of co-sponsors and may turn out to be priority legislation, especially in the Missouri House of Representatives. As you consider this issue, you may also find it helpful to read a statement that was issued by the U.S. Catholic Bishops in 1994 entitled "Confronting a Culture of Violence."
