FEATURED TALENT
Fred Gillen Jr.
11:00 am to 1:00 pm
Since his first solo concert in 1996, Fred Gillen Jr. has traveled all over the U.S. and Europe singing his songs of hope and struggle. At every performance he opens his heart and pours out the unglamorous but compelling tales of the marginalized and forgotten. His songs have often been described as both painfully intimate and universal. His live performances are spontaneous celebrations of all that it is to be human; the joy and the pain, the comedy and the tragedy. Hope Machine, the traveling hootenanny that he is a founding member of, is an "official program" of the Woody Guthrie Foundation & Archives. Gillen is a prolific songwriter, recording artist, and producer. From 1997 to the present, he has released numerous albums including two with Hope Machine, and one as half of the duo "Gillen & Turk". As a producer he has about thirty records credited to him, and his studio "Woody's House" is a busy hub of Hudson Valley creativity. His own latest album, Silence Of The Night, brings him back to his rock roots, while still retaining a folk message. It features his first spoken-word piece on record in ten years and his first instrumental in sixteen years! The new album dips a big, colorful bucket into the wellspring of American music, touching on folk, Americana, rock, roots, and even funk. Gillen will be touring constantly in 2013 and promoting his new album.

WHAT'S AT MARKET
September is National Organic Harvest month. It is a month long celebration of the bounty of the organic harvest. Look for us under the BIG tent this week and come support your local farmers and artisans!
Our Featured Vendor, Honey Locust Farm House has a bumper crop of jalapenos. Check out Nancy's recipe for tomatillo salsa. While Salsa Verde might be the most popular salsa in all of Mexico, Salsa Verde Cruda or "raw" green version is really simple & quick to make and has lots of flavor. To give the salsa some heat you can leave the ribs & seeds intact. If you like it milder you can leave some, or all of the seeds out. You can add the Salsa Verde Cruda to guacamole or it is delicious on its own over fish, chicken or as an accent for any grilled meat. Want to keep it basic...make a large batch and serve it with tortilla chips!
Speaking of jalapeno...did you try the Jalapeno Lime Sorbet from Johnny Gelato last week? It has a nice kick and they are bringing it back this week! A few of the other flavors being served up are their popular Fall flavor, Pumpkin and Blueberry Lemon Sorbet.
There's nothing like fresh raw organic vegetables for snacking. Mt. Holly Farm will have their "famous" French Breakfast Radishes, Watermelon Radishes, Tomatoes, Sun Gold Tomatoes, Lacinato and Curly Kale, Swiss Chard, Cucumbers and the last of the Summer Squash and garlic.
Gaia's Breath Farm, a Featured Vendor, will have Heirloom Tomatoes, Frying Peppers, Mesclun mix, Purple Top Turnips, Spring Raab, Mizuna and lots more vegetables! For meats they will have veal meatballs, veal sausages and various fresh pork cuts. All is grown organically, non-GMO seeds, and the soil is enriched with vegetable and animal compost, as well as mineral rock...the result...highly nutritious food.
Many of you are in "back to school" mode...preparing healthy snacks and lunches...consider the wholesome sandwich loaves - Honey Whole Wheat and Natural Buttermilk White from Wave Hill Breads, named "Best Bread" by Connecticut Magazine.
Table of Condiments returns with their handcrafted Green Tomato Relish and Peach Compote. The Green Tomato Relish, made with fresh tomatoes from JD Farms, pairs well with sausages, brats, hamburgers or chicken. The Peach Compote is created using many local ingredients...fresh delicious Eastern peaches, local honey and local Chardonnay. Serve the Peach Compote over grilled chicken, sliced pork loin or broiled on top of your favorite light fish. Pick up a jar or try them both and stop by John Boys Farm or Cabbage Hill Farm stands for your favorite meat to BBQ.
Reminder - if you want to special order anything from Mt. Kisco Seafood for pick up at the farm market, call the store by Friday. They will have their tasty crab cakes, crab parm dip and much more!
From Ladle of Love this week comes a refreshing end of summer, early Fall selection...Chilled Cantaloupe Soup with Far East spices for $7 a jar. Jnana Organics will have a variety of fresh pressed juices and nut mylks.
Revolving vendor Coast to Coast Dog Treats is returning this week. They are featuring their Tropical Tummy Tamer Treat...sorry just for canines! This biscuit is made with organic Pumpkin and organic Coconut. Both Pumpkin and Coconut are great sources of fiber and good for your dog's digestive and intestinal health.
"Nick the Knife" Jacobs is back this Saturday! Bring your knives (including serrated), clippers, shears, scissors and other cutting implements to the market and Nick will sharpen them...all while you shop! His sharpening is hand done in five stages, leaving your knives razor sharp and a pleasure to use. Put your knives out the night before so you don't forget them!

Honey Locust Farm House
Owner: Nancy MacNamara
Nancy farms on the same piece of land she grew up on in Newburgh, NY. She returned to take over the family farm in 1985 during the rise of organic agriculture and the "back to the land" movement. As Americans in the 80's were growing more sophisticated about food, Nancy decided to experiment and try to grow fruit for it's flavor instead of it's size or appearance. She was greatly influenced by William Albrecht, a pioneering soil specialist, who believed that if you feed the soil, then the soil will feed the plant and the fruit will taste the way it should. Today, Honey Locust Farm House is a unique small scale farm that specializes in selling fresh organically grown specialty fruit and produce to chefs of high-end restaurants and local farmer's markets. Nancy is an educator and has established a Center of Sustainability at the farm, as well as serves as a consultant for sustainable garden/farm design and edible landscapes. The farm offerings include seasonal produce, fruits, organic teas, elderberry elixirs, gourmet culinary herbs, cider, jam and honey.
