WHAT'S AT MARKET

Summer Squash

Dare we talk about the end of summer...how can we not when Labor Day weekend is ahead of us! About this time I love to think about easy ways to use all the tomatoes I see at the market.

Eileen of Cabbage Hill Farm has a simple, yet delicious recipe for oven-roasted Roma tomatoes. She suggests either the white or red Romas. Slice them lengthwise (removing seeds) and lay them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, skin side down. Drizzle in olive oil and lots of fresh thyme. Salt and Pepper. Bake at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes or until the tomatoes have carmelized. Saute chopped Kale
in garlic and olive oil. Toss all of this into your
favorite handmade artisan pasta from Flour
City Pasta, open a bottle of Whitecliff Vineyard wine and ring the dinner bell!

Plum Plums Cheese will have fresh NY

State Mozzarella from Joe's Dairy, as well as Burrata this week. Burrata in Italian means 'buttered". It is an Italian cheese whose outer shell is solid mozzarella, but the inside contains both mozzarella and cream, giving it an unusual, soft texture...both pair beautifully with sliced tomatoes and fresh basil.

Featured vendor Kontoulis Olive Oil offers jars of naturally tree-ripened Kalamata olives and green cracked olives in a homemade brine. Their all-natural olive puree, made from Kalamata olives is perfect for spicing up any appetizer with its rich, smooth flavor. They carry an aged Balsamic vinegar that complements their Extra Virgin Olive Oil and it all pairs well
with Wave Hill Bread...imagine the Ciabatta with Olives and Roasted Red Peppers dipped in Kontoulis EVOO... you don't even need a "dipping sauce."
Demetra's latest product, which she makes in small batches, is a fragrance-free, pure and simple olive oil soap, that gently cleans and moisturizes your skin as it fights signs of aging.

Lou from JD Farms, another Featured Vendor this week,
will have red & yellow Watermelons, Cantaloupes, Apples, Plums, Tomatoes, Cucumbers...and lots of Corn.

Leave Leaves Alone is our guest this week and they will have samples of different stages of leaf mulching. Visit their booth and find out
how leaf mulching can save you money and time, while helping the environment.

Back by popular demand are Dark Chocolate
gelato and Espresso gelato from Johnny Gelato...for the more adventurous among us, Jalapeno Lime sorbet (just enough kick) and I'm thinking breakfast here, French Toast gelato (cinnamon/maple with pieces of French Toast folded in) and that's just a sampling of what we'll have at market this week!

FEATURED VENDORS Kontoulis Family

Kontoulis Family Olive Oil

Owner: Demetra Kontoulis Bouras

The Kontoulis family came to the United States in 1969 and presently live in Larchmont. A few years ago, Demetra, named for the Greek goddess of the harvest, inherited the olive groves that her grandfather had planted in her native village of Strefi. This fertile plain of Messinia, Greece has a long tradition of producing high quality olive oil. For years Demetra supplied olive oil from her family's trees to friends and family members in the US. Encouraged by their enthusiastic response to the superb taste and quality of her estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil, she became a part-time olive grove farmer and oil producer. The product is cultivated in a natural and traditional method. The olives are cold pressed within 24-48 hours of harvesting, shipped to the US in bulk and bottled locally. The result is the real deal- raw, unfiltered, 100% olive juice! Today, Demetra and her family return to Greece for the annual olive harvest and actively participate in the selection, and production of their olive oil.

JD Farms

Owner: Louis D'Alessandro

When you talk about local, you can't get much more local than Lou D'Alessandro. Lou was raised in North Salem, New York. His home sat on an old dirt road surrounded by fields of hay. He was just 11 years old when he got his first after school job at Outhouse Orchards, a family owned and operated orchard in Northern Westchester. This was where his love of farming began and under the guidance of Wayne Outhouse, Lou learned how to become a farmer. He eventually went out on his own; at first growing only corn, which is his real passion. He now has a variety of crops on a total of 42 acres (in three different locations) which make up his farm. His fresh produce is known for its extraordinary taste, which is not going unnoticed. JD Farms sales are growing; Lou's product line is expanding and he hopes to acquire land of his own in the not too distant future.

FEATURED GUEST

     Leave Leaves

Leave Leaves Alone is a Bedford-based grassroots environmental initiative that educates homeowners and professional landscapers about the many advantages of mulching fall leaves and using them in the garden as a natural way to enrich soil. The common practice of removing leaves from gardens is very often destructive to topsoil, can be very noisy, since it most often involves leaf blowers, and is costly, both to homeowners and to municipalities, when trucking leaves to composting facilities. Leaf mulching can save money, save time and is good for the environment.
