WHAT'S NEW AT THE HOMESTEAD
|
THREE APPLES IN THE HONORABLE JOHN JAY'S EYES
Rusticus Garden Club, one of John Jay Homestead's partners, has planted young apple trees on the site of the "Old Orchard" on Bedford Farm. Rusticus members worked with historian Landa Freeman to select the trees based upon documented evidence of trees John Jay purchased from Prince Nursery in Yonkers in the late 18th century. The trees were grafted and cared for by club members for several years before they were planted at John Jay Homestead last month. These heritage apple trees are Esopus Spitzenberg, Rhode Island Greening, and Yellow Newtown Pippin apples. In addition to the apples, two varieties of pear trees, Potomac and Harvest Queen, have also been planted. Look for the orchard in the back field, to the east of the Main Barn. |

SCHOLAR RETURNING TO WORK IN THE ARCHIVES
If you see this scholarly-looking gentleman around the site toward the end of the month, welcome him: it's Robert Trendel, generously volunteering his time and skill in the archives at John Jay Homestead. Bob is a retired Lutheran pastor, from Racine, Wisconsin...and also the author of William Jay: Churchman, Public Servant, and Reformer, his dissertation for his PhD from Southern Illinois University and still the best biography of William Jay, the abolitionist younger son of John Jay. Having examined last fall a cache of documents coming originally from members of the Iselin family (and donated to the site by the Friends in 2001), he will now make his way through a more miscellaneous collection of materials, including producing finding aids to make important pieces easier to locate. He promises to tell us right away about any surprising discoveries.
