Discovery Centers will simultaneously open in five other buildings: the Main Barn, the Schoolhouse, the Playhouse, the Potting Shed, and the summer kitchen in the John Jay house. Also in the historic house, a new exhibit, Reflections on our Past: A Viewer Response Exhibit, will present dozens of rarely seen artifacts from the Homestead's historic collection, with a range of responses from members of our community. APRIL FOOLS!
Visitors will get to test their eye for things that don't belong at John Jay Homestead State Historic Site this April, when the historic home of Founding Father John Jay puts on its annual April Fools! program. The program will run for the full month as a special feature of the museum's regular guided tours, with different versions of the game for kids and for adults. John Jay Homestead's period rooms are furnished in the style of the 1820s, the last decade of John Jay's life. About half the furniture and nearly all of the pictures displayed are original to the house; gaps in the historic site's collection have been filled with appropriate antiques that did not belong to the Jay family, and with historically accurate reproductions. Before the house became a museum, however, the Jay family lived there until the 1950s. Locked away in its storerooms are hundreds of items that date from the 1830s to the 1950s. For the adult version of the April Fools! game, several of these things will be installed in the period rooms, so grownups can play the game of picking out the pieces not correct for the 1820s. For the children's version, modern objects that are easier to spot will be displayed. The game will be lots of fun and it will be educational. Admission to the house museum costs $7.00 for adults, $5.00 for seniors and for students, and free for children up to age 12 and members of the Friends of John Jay Homestead. There will be no additional charge for participation in the April Fools! program. Tours will begin hourly, from 10:00 until 4:00, Saturday through Wednesday. |
