2013 SCHOLARS LECTURE SERIES

 America and Great Powers Diplomacy

Tuesday, March 5th, 7:00 p.m.
(Registration and refreshments begin at 6:15 p.m.)

Walter Stahr
 Seward: Lincoln's Indispensable Man

Governor of and Senator from New York State and a strong opponent of the spread of slavery, Seward was a dominant figure in the early Republican Party and the leading contender for the party's nomination in the election of 1860. Losing to Lincoln, he joined his "Team of Rivals" as Secretary of State, and (among other indispensable roles) was crucially important in keeping England from supporting the Confederacy in the Civil War. Then, surviving an attempt on his own life on the night of Lincoln's assassination, he stayed on as Andrew Johnson's Secretary of State, and negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia. Doris Kearns Goodwin calls the book "magnificent...a full, terrific and complex portrait of [Seward's] endlessly fascinating life." Walter Stahr is also the author of the leading biography of John Jay.

In addition, Barnet Schecter will be displaying some historical maps and documents, from the Civil War era and the purchase of Alaska.  Schecter is a map collector and collections advisor, the author of George Washington's America: A Biography Through His Maps, and
The Devil's Own Work: The Civil War Draft Riots and the Fight to Reconstruct America.  He spoke at a Scholars Lecture at John Jay Homestead in 2010.

WOMEN'S EXHIBIT TO CLOSE APRIL 10th

Am I Not Myself a Woman?
The First Generations of Jay Women at Bedford.

This exhibit focuses on women's lives in the late 18th century and the first half of the 19th century, as exemplified by John Jay's wife, Sarah Livingston Jay, her three daughters, Maria, Ann, and Sarah Louisa, and her daughter-in-law, Augusta McVickar Jay. The exhibition examines the roles and responsibilities women had to fulfill during these years, as well as their opportunities for personal growth through education and religious observance. Artifacts from John Jay Homestead's historic collection are prominently displayed, including painted and sculpted portraits of the Jay women, an elegant pair of mahogany sewing tables believed to have been purchased for Maria and Ann Jay, family jewelry, Maria Jay's book of pressed flowers, and Sarah Jay's grandmother's early 18th-century silver teapot, which was passed down through generations of women in the family.

The exhibit can be viewed both as part of a regular tour of the historic house, and by itself, during special gallery hours held on Fridays from 10:00 to noon, and on Sundays from noon to 2:00.
