ESSAY CONTEST WINNER!

One of the ways that John Jay Homestead continues to grow is through the many valuable partnerships we've formed. One of these partnerships is with Teaching the Hudson Valley, an organization that helps educators and students discover and appreciate the natural, historic, and cultural treasures of the Hudson Valley.
This fall Friends of John Jay Homestead participated in Teaching the Hudson Valley's "Writing about Place" essay contest. The Friends generously sponsored a first place prize, up to $700 to cover the cost of busing for the winning student's class.
This prize was awarded to Tristan Brideweser, a fourth grader from Chester Elementary School, in Orange County for his poem: Minnewaska the Majestic.
Each student's writing was read by a panel of 3-6 education professionals, including the Homestead's Education Director, Bethany White. Readers looked for evocation of place, a vivacious voice, and use of conventions appropriate to each student's age and development. Only writings about places of cultural, historic, or natural significance were eligible for prizes.
Thanks to the generosity of the Friends, all of the 4th grade students from Chester Elementary will be coming to John Jay Homestead this June for a field trip.
School trips to John Jay Homestead are almost totally booked for this spring, so if your class or your children's class wants to visit, book your trip now by contacting Bethany White at (914)232-5651 ext. 101. We are also looking for volunteers to help with school groups and tours. If interested, please contact Bethany White at the number above.

2013 SCHOLARS LECTURE SERIES
America and Great Powers Diplomacy
Colonel Cindy Jebb
Counterinsurgency: A Reexamination
Tuesday, February 12th, 7:00 p.m.
Registration and refreshments at 6:15 p.m.
This past May, the New York Times reported on the active debate inside the US Military Academy about the strategy of counterinsurgency as it has been used in Iraq and Afghanistan: is it effective? Is it worth the cost? How should the Army think about future roles and missions, and how best can it prepare future leaders at West Point for such a world of uncertainty? Colonel Cindy Jebb, PhD, will share some of those discussions with us, as well as describe West Point's strong tradition of academic freedom. Colonel Jebb is Professor and Head of the Department of Social Sciences at West Point. She teaches courses in comparative politics, international security, cultural anthropology, terrorism and counterterrorism, and military officership. She was instrumental in establishing the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point, and developing its leading terrorism and counterterrorism curriculum.
