Carriage Barn Education and Visitor Center

Construction to be Completed Next Week

We are excited that the construction phase of the Carriage Barn Education and Visitor Center will be nearly completed on December 7th and we thank the many donors who helped to make this transformation happen!

John Jay's handsome original carriage barn (c.1800) has been transformed into a three season Education and Visitor Center, and will contain information and orientation spaces, places for both quiet and hands-on exploration, a small theatre and reading room, video and computer areas, a horse stall exhibit area, and a gift shop.

The Education and Visitor Center will help us tell all the parts of our story in one place - history, agriculture, decorative arts, farm and gardens. It is a proud addition to the list of outbuildings already restored through the efforts of Friends of John Jay Homestead and its partnership with New York State, including the School House, Potting Sheds, Main Barn, Brick Cottage exterior, and the Draft Horse Barn. We are proud of the growth of the site, and we hope you are too.

We are actively raising funds for the educational components of the Center which are scheduled to be installed in the spring. Would you like to be a part of this transformative building? We welcome contributions at any level. For a donation of $1000 or more, we would be pleased to add your name to the plaque in the new Visitor Center.

The grand opening of the Education and Visitor Center will take place the weekend in May with the "Return to Bedford Farm" Gala on Saturday evening, May 18th, and a family open house on Sunday, May 19th.

The Resilient Metropolis: The Rise, Fall and Rise Again of New York City

Monday, December 10th Jackson
6:15 pm Reception
7:00 pm Presentation

We are pleased to be welcoming Professor Jackson, the Jacques Barzun Professor in History and the Social Sciences at Columbia University to John Jay Homestead. He is the pre-eminent historian of New York City; a prolific author, Editor-in-Cheif of the renowned Encyclopedia of New York City, and winner of virtually every important history prize in the field.

New York City over the last 400 years has suffered devastating fires, riots, epidemics, financial crises, and recently, Hurricane Sandy.  During John Jay's lifetime it went from being a dismal and disappointing place to the leading city in North America.  And between the manuscript completion and publication of Empire City, it suffered the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.  Yet each time, the city has rebuilt and reinvented itself, and claimed resurgence to offer again "hope, opportunity, freedom, challenge and exhilaration."  Professor Jackson will share his theories about how this has been possible, with special reference to the periods when members of the Jay family were living and working in New York, and involved with its public life.

John Lewis Gaddis
George Kennan: An American Life

Thursday, January 10th, 7:00 p.m.

Author of the 1946 State Department "Long Telegram" and the 1947 Foreign Affairs "X article," George F. Kennan articulated the doctrine of containment as the basis for postwar peace with the Soviet Union: that the Soviet Union was inherently expansionist, and at the same time vulnerable to failure from within. Advisor to and critic of Presidents from Truman through Reagan, Kennan lived to see what he felt was the misapplication of his containment doctrine in Vietnam, and the collapse of the Soviet Union. John Lewis Gaddis is the Robert A. Lovett Professor of Military and Naval History at Yale University, where he teaches classes in Cold War history, grand strategy, international studies, and biography. George Kennan was awarded the 2012 Pulitzer Prize in biography.
