Victoria Ranked as Third Best Performing Small City in the Country
The City of Victoria is the third best performing small city in the country, according to the Milken Institute's 2014 report, "2014 Best- Performing Cities: Where America's Jobs are Created and Sustained."

The report used job and wage growth, and the
number of high tech industries in the City as indicators for the ranking.
Fire Department Receives Donation from INVISTA
INVISTA recently made a donation of $5,000 to the Victoria Fire Department to renovate a public safety education trailer. The
safety trailer was also donated to the department by INVISTA.

The Fire Marshal Division coordinates public education for the department and will be able to utilize the trailer to deliver fire safety education to the local elementary schools. Public Education is a core mission of the fire department and INVISTA's generous donations will allow the Department to more effectively carry out that mission. The Fire Department is thankful to have community partners, like INVISTA, that support the department and the community.

Register for Spring Sports Leagues
The Victoria Parks and Recreation Department is now accepting registration for spring sports leagues  through Feb. 20. Late registration will be available Feb. 23-24.

Leagues are forming for softball, flag football and kickball. Team registration fee is $300 and leagues begin playing on March 9.

Mandatory Manager meetings will be held from 7-8 pm on Feb. 24 at the Victoria Community Center, 2905 E. North St.

The Softball Leagues will play on Monday (Church Co-Ed, Industrial Men's and Women's), Tuesday (Mixed Competitive, Mixed Gold, Mixed Recreation) and Thursday nights (Men's Competitive and Men's Recreation).

The Flag Football Leagues will play on Wednesday nights (8-on-8 Men's Open League and 8-on-8 Men's 35 & Over League).

The Kickball Leagues will play on Wednesday nights (Mixed Competitive and Mixed Recreation).

CHILDREN and TEENS

Baby Time
- Mondays at 2 pm and Tuesdays at 10 am
Baby Time is for the enjoyment of babies up to the age of 2. Lap play, songs, flannel boards and interactive reading to engage caregivers and babies.

  

Toddler Story Time - Wednesdays at 9:30 am and 10:30 am, and Thursdays at 9:30 am

Stories, repetitive songs, simple crafts and finger plays to encourage early language development for ages 2-3. 

  

Story Time - Thursdays at 10:30 am

Stories, music, games and simple crafts for ages 4-5.

 

Family Night at Chick-Fil-A - Feb. 3, 6-8 pm

Come join the Library at Chick-Fil-A for a fun-filled activity. Whispering Creek location.

 

Lego Play - Feb. 10, 4-5:30 pm

Bring your imagination, build with Legos, meet other Lego enthusiasts and win a prize for fabulous Lego designs. Families of all ages welcome at this come and go event.

 

Movie @ VPL - Feb. 7, 10 am-noon

This month's feature movie is "The Lorax." Free popcorn will be served. 

   

ADULTS

Brown Bag Book Group - Feb. 4, noon-1 pm

The Brown Bag Book Group meets on the first Wednesday of the month in the Bronte Room. Light refreshments provided. 

 

COMPUTER CLASSES

We offer three kinds of technology programs on an ongoing basis: Tech Basics, Tech Labs and Tech Extras. Classes range from beginner to advanced courses and are taught at Workforce Solutions of the Golden Crescent Computer Lab and the Victoria Public Library. Tech Labs are available on Wednesdays at the Library from 9-11 am. These labs include:

 

Tech Lab: Skills Practice for learning how to set up an email account, how to download an eBook from the Library's free eBook collection, or how to use one of the Library's computer skills tutorials. No registration required.

 

Tech Lab: Online Job Application Help for filling out online job applications. Bring the information for your job application to this open lab. No registration required.

  

Tech Extras are programs on new and popular technology programs. They vary month to month, so be sure to check our newsletter, website and facebook page for upcoming programs. This month's program will be "Learning How to Set-Up Facebook for Your Business" from 10 am to noon on Feb. 7.

Grease is the Word!  

The Victoria Parks & Recreation Department is offering a drive-in movie on Friday, Feb. 20 starting at 7 pm. The drive-in movie will be held at the Riverside Stadium parking lot.

The drive-in movie is free. A limited number of vehicles will be allowed to park in the lot. Community members can also bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the movie that will played on a big screen.

There will be a 1950's-inspired costume contest, so those attending are encouraged to enter and participate. The  winner of the contest will receive a $50 gift certificate from the Pumphouse Restaurant. Classic cars will also be on display, courtesy of Crossroads Cruisers, Golden Crescent Antiques and South Texas Performance.

Upcoming Events & Meetings
Rose Pruning Workshop
Join the City's rose experts at the Victoria Memorial Rose Garden in Riverside Park on Wednesday, Feb. 4 as they share tips and techniques on rose pruning methods. There will be one afternoon session from 12:30-3 pm. Space is limited. Call 485-3200 to reserve your spot.

Mardi Gras Street Dance
The Victoria Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with Hartman Distributing, is hosting a free Mardi Gras Street Dance from 7-10 pm on Tuesday, Feb. 17 at DeLeon Plaza in downtown Victoria. Music provided by the Hot Attacks. Call 485-3200 for more information.

City Council 

Victoria City Council meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month beginning at 5 pm in the Council Chambers, located at City Hall in downtown Victoria, 108 W. Juan Linn. This month, the Council meets on Feb. 3 and 17.


Library Board
The Victoria Public Library Advisory Board meets from noon to 1 pm on Wednesday, Feb. 18 in the Bronte Room at the Library.


Parks Commission
The Parks Commission meets at 5:30 pm on Monday, Feb. 9 in the Council Chambers, located at 108 W. Juan Linn.  

 

Planning Commission
The Planning Commission meets at 5:15 pm on Thursday, Feb. 19 in the Council Chambers, 108 W. Juan Linn.
