Volunteers Still Needed for Bootfest  

Bootfest 2014 is just around the corner and volunteers are still needed to help in several different areas of the festival on Friday, Oct. 3 and Saturday, Oct. 4 in downtown Victoria. There are many ways to get involved with Victoria's biggest free celebration. Volunteers can help in more than one area of the festival and for more than one shift if they choose.

 

Volunteer opportunities are available in the following areas:

  • Frozen Drink Booth
  • Ticket Booth
  • ID Checking
  • Kids Corral

Bootfest volunteers receive a FREE Bootfest t-shirt or volunteer button and an air-conditioned hospitality area with complimentary beverages and snacks during their shifts.

and click on "Bootfest" on the menu bar. Look for the "Volunteer at Bootfest" tab to complete the online registration form.   

 

Volunteers working in the beer booths, frozen drink booths, ID checking booths and ticket booths must be 21 years or older.

 

This is a perfect volunteer opportunity for individuals, families, friends, corporate groups, school groups, and community service organizations.

Baby Time - Mondays at 2 pm and Tuesdays at 10 am

Baby Time is for the enjoyment of babies up to the age of 2. Lap play, songs, flannel boards and interactive reading to engage caregivers and babies.

  

Toddler Story Time - Wednesdays at 9:30 am and 10:30 am, and Thursdays at 9:30 am

Stories, repetitive songs, simple crafts and finger plays to encourage early language development for ages 2-3. 

  

Story Time - Wednesdays at 2 pm and Thursdays at 10:30 am

Stories, music, games and simple crafts for ages 4-5.

  

Bootfest Dance Along - Oct. 4, 3-3:30 pm
The Children's staff and friends will be singing and dancing their hearts out to celebrate Bootfest. Put on your dancing boots and meet us downtown in the Kids Corral area under the tent to learn some silly songs.  

 

Family Night at Chick-Fil-A - Oct. 7, 6-8 pm
Come join the Library at Chick-Fil-A for a fun-filled activity. Whispering Creek location.

 

Lego Play - Oct. 14, 4-5:30 pm
Bring your imagination, build with Legos, meet other Lego enthusiasts and win a prize for fabulous Lego designs. This program is come and go.  

 

Magazine Bowls for Teens - Oct. 16, 5-6 pm 

Come make bowls out of recycled magazine paper. This tutorial will teach you how to weave beautiful bowls. 

 

Movie @ VPL - Oct. 25, 10 am-noon.
This month's feature presentation is "Casper".   

 

Pumpkin Take Home Craft - Oct. 27-31
Get into the fall spirit with our "Make Your Own Pumpkin" Take Home Craft. Pick up craft at the Information Desk anytime during the week.

Hang out with other kids, teens and families for an afternoon of classic board games and video games. This program is come and go.

Brown Bag Book Group - Oct. 1, noon-1 pm

The Brown Bag Book Group meets every first Wednesday of the month in the Bronte Room. Light refreshments and a relaxed atmosphere provided.

 

Alzheimer's and Dementia. Early Detection Matters.

Oct. 17, 12:30-3:30 pm

The goal of this program is to provide compelling information about Alzheimer's disease and moving testimony from families living with the disease to encourage early detection. Participants will be able to identify the 10 warning signs of Alzheimer's disease and what to do next.

 

P.O.S.T. The Paranormal Organization of South Texas 

Oct. 25, 2-4 pm

Andrew Alvarez and Brian Valadez of the Paranormal Organization of South Texas are returning to the Victoria Public Library to show brand new evidence from their most recent investigations of Presidio La Bahia and the Foster Field Barracks. This event is for families of all ages and will be held in the Bronte Room. 

 

    

COMPUTER CLASSES

  

We offer three kinds of technology programs on an ongoing basis: Tech Basics, Tech Labs and Tech Extras. Classes range from beginner to advanced courses and are taught at Workforce Solutions of the Golden Crescent Computer Lab and the Victoria Public Library. Tech Labs are available on Wednesdays at the Library from 9-11 am. These labs include:

 

Tech Lab: Skills Practice for learning how to set up an email account, how to download an eBook from the Library's free eBook collection, or how to use one of the Library's computer skills tutorials. No registration required.

 

Tech Lab: Online Job Application Help for filling out online job applications. Bring the information for your job application to this open lab. No registration required.

  

Tech Extras are programs on new and popular technology programs. Facebook for Beginners will be offered on Oct. 11 from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the VPL Computer Lab. 

  

Free Computer Classes - Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:30 am

Classes range from beginner to advanced and are now taught at Workforce Solutions of the Golden Crescent computer lab and at the Victoria Public Library.  Registration is required. Click here for more information.

Downtown Streets to be Closed for Bootfest 

The City of Victoria will block several streets in downtown Victoria on Thursday, Oct. 2 in preparation for the fourth annual Bootfest to be held Friday, Oct. 3 and Saturday, Oct. 4.

The following streets will be closed:

 

6 am, Thursday, Oct. 2 
Forrest at Main and Bridge

6 pm, Thursday, Oct. 2 
- Main (Between Goodwin and Santa Rosa) *parking garage entrance will remain open and left (east) turn-only permitted onto Goodwin
- Glass (Between Goodwin and Constitution)
- Forrest (Between Moody and Liberty)
- Constitution (Between Moody and Liberty)
- Bridge (Between Goodwin and Constitution)
- Goodwin at Glass

 

In addition, Goodwin will remain open at Liberty until 10 pm on Thursday, Oct. 2 to accommodate a special event at the Leo J. Welder Center for the Performing Arts.

Upcoming City Meetings & Events   

Bootfest 

Bootfest returns to downtown Victoria on Friday, Oct. 3 and Saturday, Oct. 4. Honoring our region's rich ranching heritage and celebrating all things boots, Bootfest 2014 will feature live music with two stages showcasing Texas Country and Tejano music recording artists, as well as a variety of other national and regional favorites playing country, folk, Tejano, classic rock & roll, and blues.

 

The kids will love the large Kids' Corral with a wide variety games, inflatables, and performances to entertain all ages.  

 

Shop till you drop with the 60 arts & crafts vendors and enjoy all kinds of tasty festival treats with 20 food vendors.

Boot makers and boot artisans will display their craft and fit festival-goers for custom made boots.  

 

Compete in the washer pitching tournament, check out classic rides at the classic car & truck show, and be sure to stick around for the incredible fireworks display!

City Council 

Victoria City Council meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month beginning at 5 pm in the Council Chambers, located at City Hall in downtown Victoria, 108 W. Juan Linn. This month, the Council meets on Oct. 7 and 21.


Library Board
The Victoria Public Library Advisory Board meets on Wednesday, Oct. 15 in the Bronte Room at the Library.


Parks Commission
The Parks Commission meets at 5:30 pm on Monday, Oct. 13 in the Council Chambers, located at 108 W. Juan Linn.  

 

Planning Commission
The Planning Commission meets at 5:15 pm on Thursday, Oct. 16 in the City Council Chambers, 108 W. Juan Linn.

  

National Night Out 

On Tuesday, Oct. 7, neighborhoods throughout the community will participate in National Night Out. National Night Out is held in neighborhoods all over the country to heighten community awareness about drug and crime prevention programs, and to strengthen police-community relations.

 
Officers and firefighters with the Victoria Police and Fire departments will visit the neighborhood block parties. For more information, please call the Crime Prevention office at 485-3808.
