A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on May 6 to dedicate a new "Welcome to Victoria" sign at 808 SW Moody, near the Moody Street bridge. The sign recognizes Martin de Leon, the founder of our City. Community members, city officials and de Leon family members attended the ceremony. The sign honors the City's heritage and history, while serving as a friendly and hospitable "welcome" to visitors and those entering the southwest portion of the City. City Hiring Lifeguards for Pool |
With the opening of the Gary T. Moses Municipal Swimming pool just a few weeks away, lifeguards are in demand. The City of Victoria needs to hire at least 13 lifeguards to staff the City pool.
Lifeguards provide safety and supervision to visitors to the pool. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age or older. Applicants must have American Red Cross First Aid and CPR certification, and the ability to perform basic rescues.
Rate of pay is $7.75 per hour.
Applicants who become certified lifeguards and complete the entire summer season at the City pool will be reimbursed $130 for the certification course. Lifeguards with 1 to 3 years of paid lifeguard experience will be eligible to receive $150 at the end of the season.

Volunteers Needed for Welcome Center |
The Victoria Convention and Visitors Bureau will soon open a Welcome Center at the TxDOT Inez Rest Area on Highway 59. The Center will provide tourism information services, free popcorn and coffee, and guidance for visitors. The Welcome Center will be open from 8 am to 5 pm Thursday through Saturday.
Volunteers are needed to staff the Welcome Center. Volunteers must:
- Complete a Volunteer Application form and submit it to the Victoria CVB, located at 700 Main Center, Suite 101
- Have a positive attitude
- Have knowledge of the culture and history of the area
- Be over 18 years of age
- Have minimal computer skills, great communication skills and an outgoing personality

Summer Reading Program Kicks Off
June 4th |
Summertime is almost here! If you are looking for a fun, educational and FREE activity for your children this summer, then check out the Victoria Public Library's "Read-a-Palooza" Summer Reading Program. The Summer Reading Program kicks-off on Tuesday, June 4 with a party at the Library from 9 - 10 am featuring Texas Zoo animals, balloons, llamas, snow cones, games and face painting.
The Read-a-Palooza program is for children up to 5th grade, while children in 6th through 12th grade can participate in the "Drawn to Imagine" Teen Readi ng Program. The Summer Reading Program will be held through July 30, 2013.
Participants in the Reading Program will have an opportunity to win mystery bags and prizes for reading books, including passes to the City's Municipal Swimming Pool, gift cards and coupons from Beef O'Brady's, Chick-Fil-A, Subway, Jason's Deli, Sonic and Cherry Berry.

Victoria Police Officers Earn Promotions | |
Two Victoria police officers have moved up the ranks. Officer Chris Guerra and Officer Jeff Strauss both earned promotions in early May.
Officer Strauss was promoted to Patrol Sergeant. He has served in the Victoria Police Department Patrol Division, 3rd Platoon, for five years. Prior to his promotion, Sgt. Strauss was a Senior Patrol Officer and has served as a Field Training Officer since 2011. He is also a certified Intoxilyzer Operator.
Prior to his service with the Victoria Police Department, Sgt. Strauss served in the U.S. Military Police Corps. for eight years in three states and two foreign countries.
Officer Chris Guerra was also promoted to the rank of Patrol Sergeant. Sgt. Guerra has been employed with the Vi ctoria Police Dept. for 7.5 years. He served as a Police Service Technician, Patrol Officer, a Senior Patrol Officer and has worked for the past five years in the Crime Prevention Unit.
Sgt. Guerra is a Certified Peace Officer, a Certified Crime Prevention Specialist, a crime prevention investigator, hostage negotiator and bike officer. He is also a TCLEOSE instructor and an adjunct instructor for the Victoria College Police Academy and the Texas Municipal Peace Officer's Association. In addition, he is the former Crimestoppers spokesperson and the former Public Information Officer for the Victoria Police Department.

Baby Time - Mondays at 2 pm and Tuesdays at 10 am
Baby time is for the enjoyment of babies up to the age of 2. Lap play, songs, flannel boards and interactive reading to engage caregivers and babies and inspire development.
Toddler Story Time - Wednesdays at 9:30 and 10:30 am, and Thursdays at 9:30 am
Stories, repetitive songs, simple crafts and finger plays to encourage early language development for ages 2-3.
Story Time - Wednesdays at 2 pm and Thursdays at 10:30 am
Stories, music, games and simple crafts for ages 4-5. Due to preparation for the Summer Reading Program, Story Time will not be held May 27-31.
Lego Play - May 14, 4-5:30 pm
Bring your wild imagination, build with Legos, meet other Lego enthusiasts and win a prize for fabulous Lego designs. This program is come and go. Families of all ages welcome.
Movies at the Library - May 18, 10 am to noon
Featuring Wall-E. What if mankind had to leave Earth and somebody forgot to turn the last robot off? The year is 2700 and Wall-E is a robot still spending every day doing what he was made for. Soon he is visited by a sleek robot named Eve whom he chases across the galaxy with a pet cockroach and a heroic team of malfunctioning misfit robots.

Family Gaming - May 20, 4:30-6:30 pm
Hang out with other kids, teens and families for an afternoon of gaming. Enjoy classic games such as chess, checkers and uno. Or, try your hand at one of our video games on the big screen, such as Rock Band 2, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bro.'s Brawl, Call of Duty and others.
Free Computer Classes - Tuesday and Thursdays, 9:30 am
Classes range from beginner to advanced and are now taught at Workforce Solutions of the Golden Crescent computer lab and at the Victoria Public Library. Registration is required. Click here for more information.
Self-Guided Computer Training - Wednesdays, 9-11 am
Enhance your skills with tutorials from Learning Express Library and Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing! The Computer Lab is reserved each Wednesday for this self-guided training.

City Hires Assistant Fire Marshal |
Stacey Alley w as recently hired by the City of Victoria as Assistant Fire Marshal.
Stacey previously served as Emergency Medical Task Force Coordinator for Region 7 in Central Texas. She has certifications as a Master Fire Fighter, Licensed Paramedic, Master Peace Officer, Fire Officer II, EMS Coordinator, Fire Instructor III, Master Fire Inspector/Arson Investigator, Haz-Mat Technician and Pumper-Driver Operator. | |
