Lake Michigan Water Trail Project Moves Forward
By Carol Thompson
for the Peninsula Pulse
One man's passion for paddling has turned into a 450 mile trail along Wisconsin's Lake Michigan shore.
John Browning of Milwaukee took up sea kayaking in the early 1990s. He began to paddle Lake Michigan's shores and started researching water trails around the country.
"My passion grew," Browning said. " I thought it'd be really cool to have a Lake Michigan Water Trail."
Now with the help of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources(DNR), the National Park Service, the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program & Bay-Lake Regional Planning Commission, the project has moved from one man's dream to a statewide initiative.

Honoring the Land
The Door County Land Trust
Their mission statement reads "Door County Land Trust is to preserve, maintain, and enhance lands that contributue significantly to the scenic beauty, open space, and ecological integrity of Door County".
That statement in a nutshell says it all. The Door County Land Trust (DCLT) was founded by people that saw the "writing" or development plans, on the wall. The organization has been protecting undeveloped pieces of the county in order to preserve some of the natural treasures that make Door County such an amazing place to live or vacation.
Some of the land that they protect permits hiking by the general public. We provide maps of these trails in the library of the Inn. One of the Land Trust volunteers developed an app for android phones and has recently purchaed a new Mac to learn how to develop an app for the iphone. (That's a dedicated volunteer!)

Kale & Bacon; Bacon & Kale;
Either way it's excellent!
About 1 1/2 years ago I became aware of kale through Cindy, our Front Desk gal, who was all things healthy. She made kale shakes each day for herself & her husband. I knew I couldn't go that far but I did buy the big bunchy bag & with some experimentation, came up with a recipe that we live with, and actually love!
Big Bag of Bunchy Kale
2 Cloves of Garlic, minced
8 oz Nueske's Bacon, chopped & sauteed
1/3 C Olive Oil
1/4 C water
1/4 C rice wine vinegar
Saute bacon until crisp & set bacon aside. In large frying pan with lid & using bacon drippings & olive oil, saute minced garlic slightly. Add kale to just overflowing pan, about 1 lb. & add 1/4 cup of water. Put lid on & steam for 6 minutes. Add bacon pieces & 1/4 cup rice wine vinegar. Steam for 4 minutes more & add sea salt & pepper to season. Test it for doneness. Kale holds shape nicely, more than spinach, but make sure it is soft to your liking. A great side dish! And now Cindy has moved on to produce & sell her own raw foods at Raw Vitality Foods. For information on her classes or purchasing her products, call her at 920-850-5949 or email her at raw.vitality@yahoo.com. |
