Seeing Symmetry
Matthew James Exhibits at Base Camp
by Sally Slattery, Peninsula Pulse
***
Matthew James Smith sips a chai not far from the fire in Base Camp Coffee Bar, turning his gaze from one black and white photograph on the wall to the next- haunting, mezmerizing, and remarkably symmetrical images of various landscapes, buildings. and objects. Many of the photographs on display were snapped in Door County- though they are not your typical sunsets, well known landmarks, or cherry trees. "A lot of these are from a couple miles away," says Smith, who currently resides in Ellison Bay. "I love it up here, but I'm running out of locations to shoot.
Location s often include abandoned buildings and churches- "Sometimes you just have to trespass," he smiles- as wel as "random places" he discovered with a former coworker.
When I lived up here a couple of years ago I was working for Mark Sitte. There was a kid working for him- Lars Ribbons. He has really long blonde hair, wears nothing but denim and rides a motorcycle everywhere- he's like a Lone Ranger and goes to random places and just sits and listens to music"explains Smith. Christine's Childhood Skating Memory...

I was searching for pictures of ice skaters that showed the romantic side of the sport. This old cover from Ladies Home Journal magazine was perfect & it reminded me of skating in my childhood...
When I was a child I loved skating and would often go to our local rink. There was always this sweet couple that seemed to float over the ice intertwined moving and swaying to the music playing. It was so beautiful. I always hoped that I would find someone that loved skating as much as me so when we grew older we would float over the ice, dancing as that couple did. Maybe you have a sweetheart that will skate with you: It makes every day Valentine's Day!
Right now the skating is fabulous at the Sister Bay Ice Rink, with both free skating rinks & seperate hockey rinks.(Think safety!) If you don't have your own favorite skates, rentals are available at the rink. When your toes are tingling its time to head into the warming hut where steaming cups of hot chocolate & snacks await. Under the stars, lights & music provide a wonderful backdrop for skating! The latest addition to the rink is the fire pit around which you can meet new people & look at our beautiful night sky!
If you have questions, call us at 800-324-5427 & we'll be happy to help!
