A Reflection on Ascension and the Sunday of Ascensiontide (Part Two)
|
"Pa`akai a Malamalama" (Salt and Light)
Reflections from the Dean
|
I'm always struck on Ascension Day by the thought of how confused the apostles must have been! Jesus had been present with them in his earthly ministry, absent (or so it must have seemed) from Good Friday until Easter. Then he was present again during the forty days (of and on it seems). Finally, he was absent again after he ascended. However, as Jesus promised in John's Gospel we heard last week: "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever." (John 14:16)
Presence, absence, presence, absence, presence... No wonder they were "gazing up toward heaven..." (Acts 1:10) they had been on an emotional roller coaster!
We too experience such moments feast or famine along our spiritual journeys. Many of us have experienced the confusion and the fear which comes when we feel the absence of God from our lives. Yet often those "absences" are but preludes to a deeper experience of the "presence."
Jesus did not ascend to leave us behind. Nor did he really ascend, it seems to me, (as in the older Collect for this day) "so we may in heart and mind there ascend and with him continually dwell." (Book of Common Prayer, page 226)
But rather, "Jesus Christ ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things" ("newer" Collect, BCP, page 226). Jesus "ascended" that he might no longer be bound by time and space, but present to his people at all times and in all places.
On this Ascension Day, let us ask God to "give us faith to perceive that, according to his promise, he abides with his Church on earth, even to the end of the ages..."

Sunday Spiritual Formation Hour for the Summer
|
Sundays, 9:20-10:10 am
Von Holt Room
|
Our union with God is a matter of body, mind and spirit.
By availing yourself to the Cathedral's opportunities of Christian Education, we engage our minds in a kind of prayer. To know the "Holy Other" as the One who also "dwells within," requires us to participate in a relationship that allows us to learn more about God (and ourselves).
Here's what's available in near term. Which opportunities will you come to?
Time and place: Sunday's 9:20-10:10 am, between the Services, Von Holt Room
June 1: Last gathering in the series of forums hosted by the Rev Neal MacPherson and the Dean On Being the Church after Christendom.
June 8 : On Pentecost, we will host a special speaker from South Africa! Father Michael Lapsley, the White Anglican priest who took a stand against Apartheid and bears the scars and the lessons of reconciliation. Not to be missed!
June 15- July 13th: A 5-part DVD series by best-selling author, Kathleen Norris called "Embracing a life of Meaning." Each class will include a 10-15 minute video and then our discussion. We have purchased the workbooks for you already.
June 15th: Belief Matters. Why does belief matter? To what do we give our hearts? What is the core message of what we believe-creeds or commitment?
June 22nd: The Bible Matters. The Bible is our collective story. How is that story reflected in our daily lives? What is it about the Bible that always seems to address our present moment?June 29th: Community Matters: In community, individualism and imperfection meet grace and acceptance. What is our part in the Body of Christ?
July 6th: We Matter: What it means to remain in God's image and to counter our selfishness by embracing the world and its needs?
July 13th: Place Matters: In what ways is faith set within the physical space of home, church, land and people?
July 20th - August 10th: A four-part DVD series on Dietrich Bonhoeffer, by New York Times best-selling author Eric Metaxas.
In these small group sessions, we will explore the major themes of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's writing and speaking, and how he not only helped transform an entire faith community in Germany during World War II, but how his beliefs continue to impact the Christian witness throughout the world today. This series promises to challenge and grow our faith!

Godly Play |
The Children's Gathering on the Square
Sundays, 9 am to 10 am St. Peter's Loft
|
The Children's Gathering on the Square. The program takes place in The Loft at the back of St Peter's Church, from 9am to 10am on Sunday mornings. It is appropriate for children who are curious about the bible stories that they hear in church, enrolled in pre-school through the 6th grade of school. Older children are welcome to assist as 'helpers.'
June 1. The Mystery of Pentecost. Pentecost is all about transformation. Today we remember the changes that transformed the disciples to apostles when they received the Holy Spirit. But that doesn't just happen on Pentecost, does it? We are invited by this elusive presence of God, this spirit that is as close as our breath but hard to "see." Was there a time that you can recall recently, when the Holy Spirit transformed you? What was that like? Did other people see it or feel it, too?
June 8. Happy Birthday Church! Pentecost Party. Our last meeting of the year will be a celebration of all the blessings, discoveries and creations that occurred throughout the past year of Godly Play. After a summer vacation, Godly Play will begin in September.

Father Michael Lapsley, born in New Zealand and ordained in Australia, went to South Africa in 1973 as a young Anglican priest. He became chaplain to both black and white students at the very height of apartheid oppression. In 1976 he was elected National University Chaplain. Father Michael began using his public platform to speak out against apartheid and violence against students and was expelled from South Africa. For 16 years as chaplain to the liberation movement in exile and a member of the African National Congress, he traveled the world to mobilize opposition to apartheid. In April 1990, he was sent a letter bomb from South Africa. In the blast, he lost both hands, the sight of one eye, and was severely burned. Accompanied by prayers, love, and support , he began his journey from victim to survivor to victor.
In 1993 he returned to South Africa to become Chaplain of the Trauma Centre for Victims of Violence and Torture in Cape Town. There he devised a Healing of Memories process that created safe spaces where South Africans could begin to work through the psychological, spiritual and emotional effects of the nation's past. In 1998, he formed the Institute for Healing of Memories. The Institute now works with victims of war, violence, and genocide throughout Africa and around the world. The Institute for Healing of Memories, North America makes this process available to veterans, battered women, prisoners, people recovering from addictions and others seeking healing from loss, trauma, and discrimination.
