Restoration of Sacred Places and Spaces

"Pa`akai a Malamalama"  (Salt and Light)

 Reflections from the Dean

It has been said that one of the roles of a Cathedral is to be a "Sign of God's existence for the whole community". I believe that, and one of the ways this is lived out is through of our physical presence here on Queen Emma Square.  Our buildings represent a place in Honolulu where God is present; we take up space at the conjunction of South Beretania and Queen Emma Street. The North American Dean's Conference, where Tina and I were from May 1-5, reminded me of that reality.  This annual gathering of deans, spouses, and partners from The Episcopal Church and Anglican Church of Canada is always a great event for fellowship and mutual support, and each year the program for continuing education is excellent as well.

This year the focus was on "Restoration of Sacred Places and Spaces". It was a conference that looked at Cathedral architecture and the challenges of preservation, restoration and renovation of sacred space. We had three principal presentations.

The Rev. Dr. Patrick Malloy from General Theological Seminary shared his thoughts on the theological underpinnings of why we need to preserve our sacred landmarks, but also need to look at new configurations that support worship in the 21st Century.

Mr. Robert Jaeger, president of Partners for Sacred Places, discussed the public value of our buildings and how they contribute to the enriching of our communities. Our partnership with Honolulu Theatre for Youth is similar to examples he sited.

Attendees also heard from a panel of deans who have undergone restoration, preservation, and/or building programs who shared their experiences.

All three of these talks made me think about our own context. The beauty of our buildings, the constant effort to maintain these structures and the need to be creative in our use of our sacred space for worship and the rest of our facilities for ministry, especially for formation and service to the wider community.  As the Chapter looks to the future, many of the ideas I learned at this year's NADC will be helpful to our future discussions on our Sacred Space and our place in the Honolulu community.

Requiem Eucharist for
The Rev. Canon Timoteo Quintero

Saturday, June 7, 2014, 10 am

St. Andrew's Cathedral

Fr. Albano, Fr. Quintero, Bishop Fitzpatrick (left to right). Fr. Quintero established St. Paul's Episcopal Church at Parke Chapel on Aug. 11, 1959.

The Reverend Canon Timoteo Pitenes Quintero died on May 12, 2014, after a long illness at the age of 85 and just shy of the 60th anniversary of his ordination to the Priesthood (May 26, 1954).  He was Vicar of St. Paul's Church, Honolulu, from 1959 to 1997.  Please keep his wife of nearly 56 years, Louisa, and their children and grandchildren in your prayers.

A Requiem Eucharist will celebrated for the life of Canon Quintero in the Cathedral of St. Andrew, Honolulu, on Saturday, June 7, 2014, at10 am, with the inurnment to immediately follow in the Cathedral's Memorial Garden.  Family visitation will begin in the Cathedral at 9 am.  Lunch will follow the Eucharist and inurnment.

Almighty God, with whom still live the spirits of those who die in the Lord, and with whom the souls of the faithful are in joy and felicity: We give you heartfelt thanks for the good example of your servant, Timoteo, who, having finished his course in faith, now finds rest and refreshment. May we, with all who have died in the true faith of your holy Name, have perfect fulfillment and bliss in your eternal and everlasting glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

-- The Right Reverend Robert L. Fitzpatrick

How are we to be a Cathedral after Christendom?

Co-led by the Rev. D. Neal MacPherson, the retired Sr. Minister of Church of the Crossroads UCC in Honolulu for 20 years and current member of the Cathedral, and the Dean.

Based on Neal's 2008 book The Church at the Crossroads,  On Being the Church after Christendom, we shall examine how a Christian Cathedral community lives its calling in a world vastly different from the age when were first erected. It is a different age when mainline Protestant denominations, the Roman Catholic Church and even the assorted Churches of the Anglican Communion held the religious monopoly on the culture and morality of western societies. In Christendom, the Church was at the center and yet Christendom is dying. Real Christianity may have an opportunity to be tried, and a Cathedral may be the best place to explore this new reality.

Please join Neal, and the Dean for an interactive discuss on this vital topic.

Copies of Neal's book may be purchased through Wipf and Stock Publishers, $16.00 if ordered online at www.wipfandstock.com.

Godly Play

The Children's Gathering on the Square

Sundays, 9 am to 10 am
St. Peter's Loft

The Children's Gathering on the Square.  The program takes place in The Loft at the back of St Peter's Church, from 9am to 10am on Sunday mornings.  It is appropriate for children who are curious about the bible stories that they hear in church, enrolled in pre-school through the 6th grade of school.  Older children are welcome to assist as 'helpers.'

May 18. Our Personal Saint. After his resurrection and before his ascension, Jesus used the time to prepare his followers to carry on his message. Some individuals have lived their lives in such extraordinary ways in service to God that we call those people saints. These extra ordinary individuals are recognize by the church, but many others live extra ordinary lives of service and are known to God alone. Today we invite the children to propose people from their own lives they feel live with God in an extra-ordinary way. You may wish to ask your child what choice they made in identifying the extra-ordinary in their lives.

May 25. Day of work and re-creation. There is no planned story this Sunday. We will, however, have a lesson. Our lesson will grow from our work together as we spent time in re-creation.

Prince Albert Circle is an embryonic organization forming an alliance among individuals and organizations dedicated to improving the care of families throughout Hawai'i who anticipate or experience the death of a baby during pregnancy, birth or infancy.  A resource for pediatrics is also available through our alliance at the Cathedral of St. Andrew - 'Iolani Guild.
