Choral Evensong, Rejoice in the Lamb!

Sunday, May 4, 2014, 5:30 pm

St. Andrew's Cathedral

The St. Andrew's Cathedral Choir,

John Renke, Cathedral Director of Music

Brian McCarthy, organist

Sunday, May 4, 5:30 pm, Choral Evensong at the Cathedral of St. Andrew, featuring "Rejoice in the Lamb (Op. 30)", a cantata for four soloists, SATB choir, and organ composed by Benjamin Britten in 1943. Cathedral Organ Scholar, Brian McCarthy, will be the organist and Cathedral Director of Music, John Robert Renke, will lead the St. Andrew's Cathedral Choir in this moving service. Evensong has been sung in Cathedral Churches for centuries and, through prayer and song, offers to God our thanks for the day that is past and seeks the light of God's presence through the coming night. All are welcome. Parking is free. Calabash offering gratefully accepted.

Benjamin Britten's Festival Cantata, Rejoice in the Lamb, was written in 1943, shortly after his return from the United States. For the text, Britten used sections the visionary poem Jubilate Agno, by the eccentric eighteenth-century English poet Christopher Smart. Vibrant choral sections - one an onomatopoeic celebration of musical instruments - are set against mysterial solos for soprano, alto, tenor and bass. The two Hallelujah sections, which hark back to the music of Henry Purcell, imbue the work with a sense of quiet joy.

Godly Play

The Children's Gathering on the Square

Sundays, 9 am to 10 am
St. Peter's Loft

The Children's Gathering on the Square.  The program takes place in The Loft at the back of St Peter's Church, from 9am to 10am on Sunday mornings.  It is appropriate for children who are curious about the bible stories that they hear in church, enrolled in pre-school through the 6th grade of school.  Older children are welcome to assist as 'helpers.'

May 4. The Good Shepherd and the World Communion. This is a lesson will help us mesh the scripture we hold so dearly in our Bible and our weekly worship together (our Liturgy). As we revisit the Parable of the Good Shepherd and weave it together with all the people around the world who share in the Eucharist at communion tables everywhere. There is a connectedness that goes way beyond our own congregation. I wonder if you have come close to this table? I wonder if you have ever heard the words of the Good Shepherd spoken just for you?

May 11. Mary the Mother of Jesus. It could be said that Easter is the perfect season to focus on the life of Mary. While her willingness to be the mother of Jesus is and important aspect of her life, she continued to be lovingly present through the boyhood, adult life and death of her child. Today we will hear her story and hear how she mothered Jesus, and served to mother us all.

Who's Graduating?

We know of several people, but don't want to miss anyone. If someone near and dear to you will be graduating this spring from high school, college, or graduate school, please call 524-2822 x 212 or email us at natasa.dator@thecathedralofstandrew.org  by May 27th and let us know their name, what school or program they are graduating from, and if they know - their future plans. We would like to recognize them at church on Sunday, June 1st.
