EASTER HAS ARRIVED!

The Lord is Risen indeed!

I've heard from many of you that this was one of the most meaningful Lenten Season, Holy Week, and Easter's yet...  Many of these people were often the very ones who truly invested and opened themselves to the rhythm of the Cathedral's Journey with Christ.  What a blessing for us to have both Fr. Martin Smith and Fr. Peter Allan join us in our Lenten Wednesday's and Sunday's Adult Formation Programs.  Truly this was a 'growing season;' one of regularly eating a meal together and worshiping in spirit and song.

This journey since Ash Wednesday has been rich and transformational because we came; because we truly desired to see the face of Jesus.  Members of our Cathedral 'Ohana worked together in our various gifts, and offered a witness of Christ's presence among us for the City.  Folks from the choir to the altar guild; from publicity to hospitality; all invested themselves in love.  This commitment to one another flowed between bulletin stuffers to preachers; from Cathedral decorators to Acolyte/Altar servers; and from sandwich makers to those sitting watch in vigil prayers.  Finally - the joy in the newly baptized!  Together this season - we witnessed the love of God working among us!

As I write this article on Earth Day (22 April), I'm also mindful how Easter and Earth Day come so close together this year.  Resurrection is all about God offering new life to what was dead.  Resurrection reminds us that we are a part of God's mission in reconciling His Creation back to Himself...  As Easter People, we are called into that same business of enabling new life for this planet, to which we are so tied.

Thomas Merton, a monk and well-known contemplative, reminds us:

"Earth is not a platform for human life.

It is a living being.

We're not on it but part of it.

Its health is our health."

So in joining God, who is in the business of making all things new... we're invited to continue to love the Earth and all its creatures and beauty.  In pausing to notice the pinks and deep yellows of our Hawaiian sunsets, or the bright red on the head of a song bird, our souls develop.  In this season of transformation - keep investing in your Spiritual Family at the Cathedral, as well.  We grow and change into the likeness of God's Son when we open and invest ourselves to the Glory of God and the good of others.  Share your gifts; your talents.  New ministries are blooming everywhere.  Consider coming to the Outreach meeting today (Sunday, 27th) at 1pm and see what we might do for our neighbors.  The 20's -30's (year olds) are gathering for a cookout at the Ala Moana Park at 3pm today...  How might we grow together?

And don't forget - Keep up your prayers.  If you were enjoying a morning read with a Lenten Devotional, find another one!  Let's stay in the business of soul-expansion and of journeying together with our loving Creator.  The Lord is Risen indeed!

Adult Formation Hour with

The Rev. D. Neal MacPherson

Sunday, 27 Apr. 9:20 - 10:10 am

Von Holt Room

How are we to be a Cathedral after Christendom?

Co-led by the Rev. D. Neal MacPherson, the retired Sr. Minister of Church of the Crossroads UCC in Honolulu for 20 years and current member of the Cathedral, and the Dean.

Based on Neal's 2008 book The Church at the Crossroads,  On Being the Church after Christendom, we shall examine how a Christian Cathedral community lives its calling in a world vastly different from the age when were first erected. It is a different age when mainline Protestant denominations, the Roman Catholic Church and even the assorted Churches of the Anglican Communion held the religious monopoly on the culture and morality of western societies. In Christendom, the Church was at the center and yet Christendom is dying. Real Christianity may have an opportunity to be tried, and a Cathedral may be the best place to explore this new reality.

Please join Neal, and the Dean for an interactive discuss on this vital topic.

Copies of Neal's book may be purchased through Wipf and Stock Publishers, $16.00 if ordered online, www.wipfandstock.com

Godly Play

The Children's Gathering on the Square

Sundays, 9 am to 10 am
St. Peter's Loft

The Children's Gathering on the Square.  The program takes place in The Loft at the back of St Peter's Church, from 9am to 10am on Sunday mornings.  It is appropriate for children who are curious about the bible stories that they hear in church, enrolled in pre-school through the 6th grade of school.  Older children are welcome to assist as 'helpers.'

Apr. 27 The Holy Family and Jesus and the Twelve. We begin the season of Easter and hear again the story of the Holy Family. Again we enter into the story of the Mother Mary, the Father Joseph, and Jesus. We meet Jesus as both baby and risen savior. In both forms, Jesus was, as he has been since, "reaching out to give the whole world a hug".

The story continues as we learn more about the twelve disciples of Jesus. We hear their names and learn a little about their lives and the symbols used to represent them. If you had a symbol to represent the essence of your life, what might it be?

May 4. The Good Shepherd and the World Communion. This is a lesson will help us mesh the scripture we hold so dearly in our Bible and our weekly worship together (our Liturgy). As we revisit the Parable of the Good Shepherd and weave it together with all the people around the world who share in the Eucharist at communion tables everywhere. There is a connectedness that goes way beyond our own congregation. I wonder if you have come close to this table? I wonder if you have ever heard the words of the Good Shepherd spoken just for you?

`Iolani Guild Spring Luncheon

Saturday, May 3, 11 am

Von Holt Room

Please join the `Iolani Guild for our Spring Luncheon  featuring Guest Speaker Leilani Kupahu Marino

Guest Speaker Leilani Kupahu Marino

For its last general meeting of the academic year, the `Iolani Guild will feature a special guest speaker from the Cathedral's 8 am congregation.  Leilani Kupahu Marino is not only a kumu hula but also a nurse who specializes in palliative care for seriously ill children and support for their families.  This talk is timely because of the event on May 20th celebrating Prince Albert.  He was the beloved son of Queen Emma and Kamehameha IV who died at the age of four leaving his parents and the whole Hawaiian kingdom grieving.  Leilani will talk to us on culturally based services for seriously ill children and their families.

The meeting starts at 11 am in the Von Holt Room of the Cathedral with a business meeting then proceeds to a potluck lunch.  Please bring a dish to share.  Leilani will speak as we enjoy our lunch with the meeting wrapping up around 1:30 pm.

All members of the `Iolani Guild are welcome.  All members of the Cathedral or Diocese who might be interested in the Guild, Hawaiian history or culture are also welcome.  For more information, contact Ann Hansen at annmanoa@hawaii.rr.com.

The May 2nd Pacific Peace Forum will feature "Hale Mōhalu" and the evictions of patients with Hansen's Disease or Leprosy in Pear City years ago in the 1970's. The patients resisted State of Hawaii efforts to evict them thought non-violent civil disobedience and brought attention to the injustices of discrimination and bureaucratic arrogance and a defining moment for civil and human rights in Hawaii.  Video and a photo display will show images of Punikaia and fellow patient Clarence Naia being carried, stoic and peaceful, from their hospital home that touched thousands of people, many of whom saw the evictions as an act of arrogance by a state bureaucracy that valued dollars over humanity.
