 Reflections of Mtr. Sowers

Already, this has been a good Lenten Season for us...

The Rev. Susan Sowers I feel, as a community, we have taken on this season of Lenten preparation with great intention; that we are truly listening and looking for the Spirit's movement among us...

Many have taken on the discipline (and blessing) of Sunday and Wednesday's Evensong. In large number's we've joined the global chorus of other faithful people around the world who are also lifting their hearts and voice in this meditative offering of Evening Prayer. In our collective practices - I sense we've been richly fed. We've been fed at the Lord's Table, by rich Gospel lessons, and in the beauty of song. We've been fed by our special Lenten speaker, Fr. Martin Smith; and literally fed at our Wednesday Evening Lenten Soup Suppers. Like many of you, each morning I awake - grateful and eager to see what new theme is offered in Fr. Martin's Lenten book, "A Season for the Spirit." And perhaps like you - after having received real 'spiritual meat' from the author himself, I can better open myself, trusting that his words are drawn from a rich spiritual spring of God's Spirit. From all this nourishment - there's been rich conversations among us. I sense personal prayer time is happening as well. People are capturing a verse or a word-for-the-day, and then carrying it around with them as their breath prayer with God... This sense of being in a growing spiritual place, translates into an inner peace, and is bubbling over in our relationship with one another.

Not only are we being fed and nourished spiritually, the Spirit has opened a new door during Lent to share our blessings with our neighbors outside the Cathedral. Many have taken on the disciple (and blessing) of joining in the new (old) Sunday Sandwich Ministry. In this small offering of 25 sandwiches, given out to our hungry neighbors in and around Fort Street Mall, we honor our Patron Saint, Andrew. In the Gospel of John, chapter 6, Jesus asks his disciples, "How are we going to feed all these people?" Despite seeing over 5,000 hungry people in front of them, Andrew says, "There's a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish." Ridiculous right?! But this is the response of faith that Jesus asks of us! We aren't going to solve the problem of chronic hunger and homelessness in Hawaii, but we can offer to God what little we can. He is the Multiplier and the Source. Our faith in action draws us to God, to one another, and to the ones who used to be "other." Congratulations my dear friends in Christ! It looks like we will continue this ministry into Easter and after...

Already, this has been a good Lenten Season for us...

Yours in Christ,

Susan...+

The Maundy Thursday Prayer Vigil

Stay with Me, Pray With Me

To the Beloved in Christ here at The Cathedral of St. Andrew and our friends:

The words quoted above are the words Jesus asked of his disciples on the night that his Passion began. At the conclusion of our Maundy Thursday Eucharistic Feast, we are invited, as were the first disciples, to watch and pray with the Lord on the night before his crucifixion and death.  The Consecrated bread and wine from the Liturgy are removed to a Chapel of Repose in Ambulatory (the area behind the High Altar); I hope that a number of you will volunteer to keep watch through the night.  It is a solemn, sober, and somber night - for we know what the first disciples did not:  that Jesus will soon be arrested, tried unjustly, and put to death.  This Vigil should be scene as a way to deepen intimacy with Our Lord; all are welcome to share in the all-night vigil before the Blessed Sacrament.

The Cathedral will have security available, but we need your participation from the end of the Maundy Thursday Liturgy and the start of the Good Friday Liturgy at 12:00 Noon. We especially need coverage between the hours of 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. I invite you to please sign up for an hour or more.  A sign-up sheet is available after service under the Aloha Tent or you may call the Cathedral office to sign up at 524-2822.

Liturgy, Spirituality and Mission

The Rev. Peter Allan CR, speaker

9:20-10:10 am in Von Holt Room

The Rev. Peter Allan CR

Our Cathedral Guest Lecturer for the second half of Lent and Holy Week Preacher is The Rev. Peter Allan, CR (Community of the Resurrection) from Mirfield, UK. He is Prior of the Community and Principal of the The College of the Resurrection. It is the only theological college in the Anglican Communion that shares its life with a monastic community. He will focus on how worship, liturgy, and spirituality transform us for Mission as the Body of Christ in the world.

Fr Peter joined the Community of the Resurrection in 1982 after serving in parochial ministry in the dioceses of St Albans and Oxford and as chaplain of Wadham College, Oxford. He studied music at Oxford and theology at the College of the Resurrection. At the College he teaches Moral Theology and Liturgical Music.

His current research centers on the role of the western chant tradition in the articulation of Christian doctrine. He is sub-warden of the Guild of Church Musicians.

Eggs for the Children's Easter Egg Hunt

Please help us fill plastic eggs to hide for the annual Easter egg hunt on Sunday April 20th. We ask that you fill the eggs with items that won't melt (no chocolates please). Wrapped candies, small toys or coins are some suggestions. The empty eggs will be on the Aloha Hour table. Please drop off filled eggs either in the Cathedral office or at Aloha Hour.

Godly Play

The Children's Gathering on the Square

Sundays, 9 am to 10 am
St. Peter's Loft

The program takes place in The Loft at the back of St Peter's Church, from 9am to 10am on Sunday mornings.  It is appropriate for children who are curious about the bible stories that they hear in church, enrolled in pre-school through the 6th grade of school.  Older children are welcome to assist as 'helpers.'

Apr. 7. The faces of Easter VI. We continue on the journey toward the Christian mystery of Easter. At times we feel the journey will take forever and yet, before you know it there you are. We review the stories we have heard in the previous weeks and add some more. We remember the miracle of Jesus' birth in Bethlehem, his boyhood adventure in the Temple of Jerusalem, his baptism in the Jordan River by his cousin John the Baptist, the 40 days in the desert preparing for his public ministry and how he carried out those ministries.  Today we go with Jesus as he becomes a parable himself.  You may wish to ask your child how this waiting and listening time feels to them. What are we waiting for?

Apr 13. The faces of Easter VII. Today we hear the final story in the week's journey towards Easter. We walk through Jesus' life death and resurrection. Quite a lot for anyone to digest and make sense of.  But then again as Christians we spend our whole lives trying to understand the story, don't we? Your job as adults is no not turn away from the difficult story because you struggle with it. We all struggle with these mysteries, it is our job. Talk about the wonderings; say aloud "I wonder how Jesus can still be with us in this new way?" "I wonder how the sadness of Friday can turn into the pure celebration of Sunday?" It is the journey that is important. We walk together, we wonder together, we learn together as we move closer and closer to the goal.

Sunday Sandwich Ministry Update

"Do you love me?  ...Feed my sheep."

We're pleased to announce that there seems to be a consensus among us to continue the Sandwich Ministry beyond Lent.  This outreach to our hungry and houseless neighbors is satisfying both the need for us to share and for others to receive a grace.  Many thanks to Ann Reimers, who has agreed to take the lead as our Sandwich Ministry Coordinator after Lent.

This Sunday (an even-numbered day) we will be making sandwiches at 9:30 in Davies Hall, after the 8:00 am Service.  For those who would like to "Walk the sandwiches into the neighborhood," we will meet at 4:00pm in Davies Hall.  All who would like to join in (either making or distributing the sandwiches) are welcome to come!

The Sacred Triduum

The Sacred Triduum is the culmination of the entire liturgical year, commemorating the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. While we do not spend all of these three days in church, we are called to gather together as the cathedral community for these principal services. On Maundy Thursday we remember the Last Supper; Jesus gives us the Eucharist and tells us to do this in memory of me and then washes the feet of his disciples. On Good Friday we remember the passion and death of Jesus. We celebrate the resurrection of Christ at the Great Vigil of Easter on Saturday or on Easter Sunday. The Sacred Triduum is one single celebration that lasts for three days. We cannot separate the death of Jesus from his resurrection.
