Liturgy, The Eucharist and Mission
Our Time with Fr. Peter Allan, CR

"Pa`akai a Malamalama" (Salt and Light)

Reflections from the Dean

Beloved in Christ

We have been blessed by the presence among us Fr. Martin Smith the past three weeks. He has led us to understand that the false division between spirituality and mission is an error that we must resist. Martin points out that through our Baptismal Covenant, the Monastic Wisdom of the early church and the study of Jesus' ministry and the Apostle Paul.

Now for the second half of Lent, we have the Fr. Peter Allan, CR (The Community of the Resurrection from Mirfield, England) as our Cathedral Guest Lecturer and Holy Week Preacher. He is Prior of the Community and Principal of The College of the Resurrection.

Fr. Peter will build upon what Martin Smith brought us to see how the spirituality that is fostered in our worship, should lead into a deeper a union with God and thus into a deeper commitment to the Mission of God.

The Eucharist draws each of us closer to Christ as individuals, but also as a community. We never really worship alone. At the Mass, we gather all sorts and conditions of people (as the prayer as The Book of Common Prayer says) well as millions around the world. The Eucharist celebrated as a community, teaches us about human dignity, calls us to right relationship with God, ourselves, and others.

One of my former Spiritual Directors, Fr. Eldridge Pendleton, SSJE writes "most of us, most of our adult lives, hunger for intimacy. We long for someone to share life's joys and sorrows. In the sacrament of the Eucharist we find that longed-for intimacy with Christ. Through it we have a foretaste of the Kingdom of God. According to the SSJE Rule, the Eucharist "is the meal which intensifies our union with Christ, draws us together as a community, and nourishes us with the grace needed for our transformation and mission."

In this context our time with Fr. Peter Allan, CR will focus on how our worship, liturgy and spirituality transform us for Mission as the Body of Christ in the world. This Sunday I will give a further preview of Fr. Peter and his Community. Then he will lead our Dean's Forums on April 6th and 13th, plus our Wednesday Lenten Soup Supper Program on April 2nd and 9th.

I encourage to give continue support to these programs through your attendance.

Grace, Peace and Aloha,

The Maundy Thursday Prayer Vigil

Stay with Me, Pray With Me

To the Beloved in Christ here at The Cathedral of St. Andrew and our friends:

The words quoted above are the words Jesus asked of his disciples on the night that his Passion began. At the conclusion of our Maundy Thursday Eucharistic Feast, we are invited, as were the first disciples, to watch and pray with the Lord on the night before his crucifixion and death.  The Consecrated bread and wine from the Liturgy are removed to a Chapel of Repose in Ambulatory (the area behind the High Altar); I hope that a number of you will volunteer to keep watch through the night.  It is a solemn, sober, and somber night - for we know what the first disciples did not:  that Jesus will soon be arrested, tried unjustly, and put to death.  This Vigil should be scene as a way to deepen intimacy with Our Lord; all are welcome to share in the all-night vigil before the Blessed Sacrament.

The Cathedral will have security available, but we need your participation from the end of the Maundy Thursday Liturgy and the start of the Good Friday Liturgy at 12:00 Noon. We especially need coverage between the hours of 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. I invite you to please sign up for an hour or more.  A sign-up sheet is available after service under the Aloha Tent or you may call the Cathedral office to sign up at 524-2822.

Holy Week Guest Lecturer
The Rev. Peter Allan, CR, MA (Oxon)
Our Cathedral Guest Lecturer for the second half of Lent and Holy Week Preacher is the Revd Fr Peter Allan, CR (Community of the Resurrection) from Mirfield, UK. He is Prior of the Community and Principal of the The College of the Resurrection. It is the only theological college in the Anglican Communion that shares its life with a monastic community.

Fr Peter joined the Community of the Resurrection in 1982 after serving in parochial ministry in the dioceses of St Albans and Oxford and as chaplain of Wadham College, Oxford. He studied music at Oxford and theology at the College of the Resurrection. At the College he teaches Moral Theology and Liturgical Music.

His current research centres on the role of the western chant tradition in the articulation of Christian doctrine. He is sub-warden of the Guild of Church Musicians.

Please help us fill plastic eggs to hide for the annual Easter egg hunt on Sunday April 20th. We ask that you fill the eggs with items that won't melt (no chocolates please). Wrapped candies, small toys or coins are some suggestions. The empty eggs will be on the Aloha Hour table. Please drop off filled eggs either in the Cathedral office or at Aloha Hour.

New Online Giving and Membership Web Tools

We invite you to review our new Access/Online Giving pages on the Cathedral website

Aloha!

For some time, people have asked for a way to give to St. Andrews online. Our bookkeeper Wendy Charves and I have been working with our accounting software supplier ACS Technologies, and we are happy to announce that it is now available!

All you have to do is go to our website, http://www.thecathedralofstandrew.org/, and follow the links. The best place to begin is the ACCESS page, http://www.thecathedralofstandrew.org/access/, which is linked on the Cathedral Life menu. It includes a general overview of the facility. As a first-time user of ACCESS, you have to register at the Member Login page (linked not only from the ACCESS page, but also from the "Quick Links" section on any part of our web site). There is more information on a "User Guide" that you can download from the ACCESS page. Having registered, you can manage most aspects of your record in the Cathedral's database, as well as setting up one-time or recurring gifts, including automatic payments toward your current pledge.

Alternatively, you can go directly to the Online Giving page, http://www.thecathedralofstandrew.org/online-giving/,  by clicking on the red Online Giving button on every page of our website or by selecting the page under the Giving menu to make a quick donation to any current fund. If you are recognized as being in the system, you will be offered a chance to log in, but, if you prefer, you may give as a guest. Gifts are gratefully received from anyone!

Please note that the content of the ACCESS pages is largely controlled by ACS and their financial services partner, Vanco. However, the ACCESS and Online Giving pages in the Cathedral site, the User's Guide, and some formatting are entirely under our control, as are options such as lists of funds, etc.

We will be very grateful for your comments and suggestions.

Thank you for helping the Cathedral take this important step!

Choral Evensong

in memory of Canon John S. McCreary

Sunday, 30 Mar. 2014, 5.30 pm

St. Andrew's Cathedral

Choral Evensong sung by the Diocesan Choir

John McCreary

Sunday's Choral Evensong is offered in loving memory of John S. McCreary, Canon Organist Emeritus. The Introit, Psalm 23, and the setting of the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis were all composed by John McCreary and have a permanent place in the repertoire here at the Cathedral of St. Andrew. The Diocesan Choir includes Cathedral Choir members, past and present, so it is especially fitting that this service be sung by them.

John McCreary, conductor, composer, arranger, singer. and organ builder, had a brilliant 35 year career at St. Andrew's Cathedral in Honolulu, Hawaii. He delighted island audiences with awe-inspiring performances of major works and outrageously funny arrangements, such as his Variations on Rubber Ducky for organ, orchestra and chorus. Both his serious and humorous works have brought acclaim and awards from island and mainland critics. As an organ builder, McCreary added five E.M. Skinner stops to the large Aeolian-Skinner organ at the Cathedral and, then, built a three manual fourteen-rank theater organ in his home.

On the occasion of the first anniversary of his death, the McCreary family has announced the establishment of the McCreary Evensong Fund, to assure that these services, so loved by John and central to the cathedral's life, can continue in perpetuity. Donations to this fund can be made payable to St. Andrew's Cathedral and marked "McCreary Evensong Fund."

The service is at 5.30 pm this Sunday, March 30. Admission and parking are free. For further information, please call 534-2822, ext. 217.

Godly Play

The Children's Gathering on the Square

Sundays, 9 am to 10 am
St. Peter's Loft

The program takes place in The Loft at the back of St Peter's Church, from 9am to 10am on Sunday mornings.  It is appropriate for children who are curious about the bible stories that they hear in church, enrolled in pre-school through the 6th grade of school.  Older children are welcome to assist as 'helpers.'

Mar. 30. The faces of Easter IV & V. We are all on the journey toward the greatest Christian mystery, which we know as Easter. In Godly Play, we spend the six weeks of Lent revisiting pivotal moments in the life of Jesus and his journey to the cross and beyond. We add a little more to story each week. Today we hear again the stories of the miracle of Jesus' birth in Bethlehem, his boyhood adventure in the Temple and his baptism in the Jordan River by his cousin John the Baptist.  Today we will join him as he spent 40 days in the desert wilderness and the temptations he was subject to there.  We hear about what that ministry would be like.  Jesus' healed peoples and taught Gods words using parables.  We also will spend some time listening to each other as we ponder what each of us felt was important in the stories for us.

Apr. 7. The faces of Easter VI. We continue on the journey toward the Christian mystery of Easter. At times we feel the journey will take forever and yet, before you know it there you are. We review the stories we have heard in the previous weeks and add some more. We remember the miracle of Jesus' birth in Bethlehem, his boyhood adventure in the Temple of Jerusalem, his baptism in the Jordan River by his cousin John the Baptist, the 40 days in the desert preparing for his public ministry and how he carried out those ministries.  Today we go with Jesus as he becomes a parable himself.  You may wish to ask your child how this waiting and listening time feels to them. What are we waiting for?

Easter Flowers

Giving flowers in memoriam and thanksgiving

The adornment of the Cathedral with flowers at Easter is made possible through memorial gifts and thank offerings. There are envelopes available in the pews. You can also mail in or drop off your donations to the Cathedral of Saint Andrew, 229 Queen Emma Square, Honolulu, HI 96813-2304, with the name or names of those you would like listed, under the category In Memory of or In Thanksgiving for. Easter memorials will be accepted throughout Easter, but to be published in the Easter Vigil and Easter Day programs your check must be received in the office by noon on Monday, April 14, 2014.  Or try out our new online giving page at http://www.thecathedralofstandrew.org/online-giving/  , just remember to add your dedication to the note field.

Easter Floral Decorating

Saturday, 19 April
9 am in the Cathedral

Please join us in decorating the cathedral.  We will start at 9am, Saturday April 19th, and finish in the early afternoon.  We will be preparing window boxes, and various floral arrangements throughout the cathedral.  If you have a plant clipper, you may bring it (please label with your name).

Lunch will be provided.  Please sign-up at the Aloha Hour. If you have any questions, please contact Susan Hays (282-3881) or Judy Masuda (988-0969). Mahalo and we look forward to sharing this time together as we prepare for the glorious celebration of Easter.

The ChristOlympics for All Youth!

Sunday, April 6, Calvary Kaneohe

By Fr. Leo Loyola

Get ready for the biggest sports moment in the Diocese of Hawai'i: The 2014 ChristOlympics is here!

On April 6, from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm, middle school and high school youth from across the state will descend upon Calvary Episcopal Church, Kaneohe, to compete in a series of games and challenges centered on Bible knowledge and understanding of the Christian faith.

The ChristOlympics promises to be a wonderful opportunity for our youth to make new friends with those who also share in their faith. It is also a fun and unintimidating way for youth to invite their friends to a church event.  While geared toward pre-teens and teens, younger kids are invited to participate as well.

A light dinner will be served and a short communion service will conclude the event.

Register your youth up now by e-mailing either Fr. Leo Loyola or Sarah Klitzke by April 1.

The Sacred Triduum

The Sacred Triduum is the culmination of the entire liturgical year, commemorating the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. While we do not spend all of these three days in church, we are called to gather together as the cathedral community for these principal services. On Maundy Thursday we remember the Last Supper; Jesus gives us the Eucharist and tells us to do this in memory of me and then washes the feet of his disciples. On Good Friday we remember the passion and death of Jesus. We celebrate the resurrection of Christ at the Great Vigil of Easter on Saturday or on Easter Sunday. The Sacred Triduum is one single celebration that lasts for three days. We cannot separate the death of Jesus from his resurrection.
