                | | Exploring Spirituality and Mission | | Reflections of Fr. Martin Smith     I'm thankful for opportunities to explore Spirituality and Mission with you here this Lent, clarifying our sense that spiritual disciplines are not a merely private concern for the 'devout", but skills for everyone who is realizing how radical the gospel is. Spirituality draws us to the roots of reality, breaking our fascination with the superficial.   Paul speaks about being progressively "rooted and grounded in love," so spiritual practices are meant to transform our imaginations gradually so that we sense God's hidden presence in all things, all places, and all people.   A good test of the worthwhileness of any Lenten discipline: is its outcome likely to be a deepening of our faith that God is calling us to be with him in all aspects of life? If not, what's the point?   Secondly, spirituality goes to the roots of human brokenness, recognizing that humanity is in the grip of toxic collective illusions that perpetuate inequality, neglect and exploitation.   Our own sins and blind spots reveal the continued influence of forces that on a larger social scale are holding out against the pressure of God's creative holiness and compassion. Cooperating with God's grace in getting out from under these forces that spoil human lives can't be easy. So spirituality is about equipping us for struggle rather than peace and quiet.   Our own intimacy with God, and our own thorough adoption of the mindset of Jesus' Beatitudes, has as its outcome a deeper share in God's pain over the suffering and injustices that are all around us, and a deeper commitment to expose and confront the forces that are resistant to God's yearning for reconciliation, sharing, compassion.   Blessings to you on your continued Lenten Journey   Martin Smith+ |
 | Stay with Me, Pray With Me
 | | The Maundy Thursday Prayer Vigil To the Beloved in Christ here at The Cathedral of St. Andrew and our friends:   The words quoted above are the words Jesus asked of his disciples on the night that his Passion began. At the conclusion of our Maundy Thursday Eucharistic Feast, we are invited, as were the first disciples, to watch and pray with the Lord on the night before his crucifixion and death.  The Consecrated bread and wine from the Liturgy are removed to a Chapel of Repose in Ambulatory (the area behind the High Altar); I hope that a number of you will volunteer to keep watch through the night.  It is a solemn, sober, and somber night - for we know what the first disciples did not:  that Jesus will soon be arrested, tried unjustly, and put to death.  This Vigil should be seen as a way to deepen intimacy with Our Lord; all are welcome to share in the all-night vigil before the Blessed Sacrament.   The Cathedral will have security available, but we need your participation from the end of the Maundy Thursday Liturgy and the start of the Good Friday Liturgy at 12:00 Noon. We especially need coverage between the hours of 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. I invite you to please sign up for an hour or more. Walter+

 | Adult Formation at the Dean's Forum | |   Light for our Path from Monastic Wisdom The Rev. Martin Smith, guest speaker9:20-10:10 am Sundays in Von Holt Room | |   A series of teachings by Fr Martin Smith on Monastic Wisdom "Light for our Path from Monastic Wisdom"   There is a deep current interest in insights from the monastic tradition that can illuminate our spiritual journey today. In three forums, Martin Smith will look at ways in which monastic spirituality can help us with the questions 'what does it mean to be an authentic person? What kind of human being does the life of the gospel enable us to become?' |

 | Wednesday Lenten Program
 | |   | |
We are very excited about our Lenten Program this year!  For those who heard Fr. Martin Smith's "Peggy Kai Lecture" on Ash Wednesday, you know what a gift it is to have him with us.  Please consider making these Wednesday gatherings part of your Lenten Walk.    To help us get a better idea of our "headcount" on food preparation for the Soup Supper, please email the office (or sign up under the Aloha Tent) if you plan to attend. (Natasha.dator@thecathedralofstandrew.org )  Even if you haven't signed up - come!!!   5:30pm Evensong and Holy Communion in the Cathedral 6:15pm Lenten Soup Supper and Program (Ministry from the Heart) with Fr. Martin Smith (see below for details) in Von Holt Room 8:30pm:  Sung Compline in the Cathedral Ministry from the Heart   In these three sessions, Martin Smith will help us explore the relationship between our experience of intimacy with God and our call to service, outreach and evangelism. Our outgoing lives as Christians can become a set of tasks unless we can experience for ourselves the grace and presence of God as the source of our motivation. Join us for a conversation about the 'mystical core' of ministry.    |

 | Godly Play | | The Children's Gathering on the Square Sundays, 9 am to 10 amSt. Peter's Loft
 | |
The program takes place in The Loft at the back of St Peter's Church, from 9am to 10am on Sunday mornings.  It is appropriate for children who are curious about the bible stories that they hear in church, enrolled in pre-school through the 6th grade of school.  Older children are welcome to assist as 'helpers.'    Mar. 23. The faces of Easter III. We are all on the journey toward the greatest Christian mystery, which we know as Easter. In Godly Play, we spend the six weeks of Lent revisiting pivotal moments in the life of Jesus and his journey to the cross and beyond. We add a little more to story each week. Today we hear again the stories of the miracle of Jesus' birth in Bethlehem and his boyhood adventure in the Temple.  We will also spend some time listening to each other as we ponder what each of us felt was important in the stories for us.   Mar. 30.    The Sacred Triduum is the culmination of the entire liturgical year, commemorating the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. While we do not spend all of these three days in church, we are called to gather together as the cathedral community for these principal services. On Maundy Thursday we remember the Last Supper; Jesus gives us the Eucharist and tells us to do this in memory of me and then washes the feet of his disciples. On Good Friday we remember the passion and death of Jesus. We celebrate the resurrection of Christ at the Great Vigil of Easter on Saturday or on Easter Sunday. The Sacred Triduum is one single celebration that lasts for three days. We cannot separate the death of Jesus from his resurrection.
