Pa`akai a Malamalama (Salt and Light)
Reflections from the Dean
|
Lent
Another Ash Wednesday has come and gone. Another Lent is upon us.
Again we received the ashes on our foreheads and sang the Lenten hymns. Again we are called to penance, reflection, and fasting. Again we are invited to examine ourselves.
A priest friend of mine from Sewanee always began Lent with the question - What shall we discover? He then noted very probably the same sins as last year, unless, of course, we have actually succeeded in adding a few new ones. His attitude might lead one to believe that he was cynical and that his hope for spiritual growth through Lenten discipline was minimal. In fact, he is very hopeful, not because of human character, but because of the grace of God. It is expressed in the words from Ephesians 3:20
"Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine" (BCP)
The most effective spiritual directors teach us that it is really not up to us to say how we are progressing spiritually in Lent, or at anytime of year. God knows, just as God knows what God has in mind for our fellow disciples. That is all that is needed. My friend a New Testament scholar would add, Jesus' words "What is that to you? Follow me!"
To paraphrase the Anglican mystic Evelyn Underhill, who said, "the most interesting thing about religion is God". The most interesting thing about Lent is Jesus Christ. Following that what is joyful about Lent is that it is another beginning.
We should rejoice in this new opportunity for Self - Examination, Repentance, Self - Denial and ultimately New Life.
In that context I encourage everyone to participate in the rich menu of Lenten Programming, with Fr. Martin Smith. There are two primary ways to do so now.
The Dean's Sunday Forum Series
"Light for our Path from Monastic Wisdom"
There is a deep current interest in insights from the monastic tradition that can illuminate our spiritual journey today. In three forums, Martin Smith will look at ways in which monastic spirituality can help us with the questions 'what does it mean to be an authentic person? What kind of human being does the life of the gospel enable us to become?'
The Wednesday Lenten Soup Supper Evening Program
"Ministry from the Heart"
In these three sessions, Martin Smith will help us explore the relationship between our experience of intimacy with God and our call to service, outreach and evangelism. Our outgoing lives as Christians can become a set of tasks unless we can experience for ourselves the grace and presence of God as the source of our motivation. Joins us for a conversation about the 'mystical core' of ministry.
Lent speaks to us about new life and new hope: day following night, summer following winter, new birth, birth from above. The universe is a place where all things die, but it also throbs with resurrection.
In the same way, some theologians tell us, heaven itself will always be a beginning. There will always, to all eternity, be more of paradise ahead of us than we yet have known or dreamed, always new possibilities, new things to learn and to become: for God's possibilities are infinite, and God will always give more of God's Self to those who seek. Heaven, Israel reminds us, is to be a perpetual Shabbat. It is to be an eternal rejoicing in the divine Shalom, the everlasting peace and harmony of God. We Christians rejoice in that insight given us by our Jewish friends, and add to it our own - that heaven is also always a first day of the week, a perpetual Sunday, a perpetual day of resurrection.
Because of Jesus Christ, there will always be new hopes, new beginnings, and new life in the inexhaustible possibility of the One who makes all things new.
That is what Lent is about. That is why it is a good preparation for Easter, and not just for Easter, but also for eternity.
Grace, Peace, and Aloha

The Maundy Thursday Prayer Vigil
To the Beloved in Christ here at The Cathedral of St. Andrew and our friends:
The words quoted above are the words Jesus asked of his disciples on the night that his Passion began. At the conclusion of our Maundy Thursday Eucharistic Feast, we are invited, as were the first disciples, to watch and pray with the Lord on the night before his crucifixion and death. The Consecrated bread and wine from the Liturgy are removed to a Chapel of Repose in Ambulatory (the area behind the High Altar); I hope that a number of you will volunteer to keep watch through the night. It is a solemn, sober, and somber night - for we know what the first disciples did not: that Jesus will soon be arrested, tried unjustly, and put to death. This Vigil should be seen as a way to deepen intimacy with Our Lord; all are welcome to share in the all-night vigil before the Blessed Sacrament.
The Cathedral will have security available, but we need your participation from the end of the Maundy Thursday Liturgy and the start of the Good Friday Liturgy at 12:00 Noon. We especially need coverage between the hours of 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. I invite you to please sign up for an hour or more.

Building our Sandwich Ministry
|
|
Many thanks for your support and prayers as we launched our Lenten Sandwich Outreach (Spiritual Hospitality!) this 1st week of Lent. What a great success!
Mahalo to those who bought the food, donated money, made sandwiches after services, publicized our ministry, walked the neighborhood to deliver them, and for your prayers for the hungry among us. Pray that Jesus' Spirit of compassion continues to leads us in this ministry. Donations are still needed!
Scope: We are starting small. As we are intentionally "going lean in Lent" on refreshments during our Aloha Hour, a few folks are making a handful of sandwiches available for the hungry that come to us each Sunday under the Aloha Tent. After the services, others are gathering in Davies Hall to make about 20 sandwich meals to be distributed later that afternoon, primarily around China Town.
We also thank Fr. Walter Stevens, one of our assistant priests and a chaplain at Queen's hospital, for his desire to help us 'spread our blessings' to others outside our Cathedral walls. We need to do this. It's good for our souls... and it's good that we are using Davies Hall for our community.
I am very proud of what we have started. Jesus asked Peter, who represents us Christians, "Do you love me?" Three times Peter answers, 'yes'. Each time - Jesus responds: "Feed my sheep!"
I'm grateful to be a part of this team!

Outreach Update with our Friends in Saipan
|
|
Mahalo Nui Loa to the congregation for your participation as we tangibly supported our linked-congregation, St Paul's Episcopal Church in the Saipan!
 |
Susan Hays and Elizabeth Conklin joyful at our efforts in collecting clothing donations for St. Paul's, Saipan
|
On Friday Mar. 7, we shipped 13 boxes of clothing to St. Paul's! Our shipment included clothing donated by members of the Cathedral, plus 396 brand new t-shirts donated by the AARP. Prior to shipment, several joined Mtr. Susan's blessing of the clothes under the Aloha Tent following the 10:30 service on March 2nd. The parishioners of St. Paul's, many of whom are displaced garment workers, either use the clothing or sell it in local swap-meet markets to raise funds for basic necessities.

Elizabeth and Mtr. Sowers
|
The Venerable Irene Egmalis Maliaman, Vicar for the Episcopal Church in Micronesia, originally organized this ministry. Her ministries center in two congregations - St. John the Divine in Tamuning, Guam, and St. Paul's in San Jose, Saipan. St. Andrew's has maintained a supportive relationship with Mtr. Irene and St. Paul's since 2008. Historically, in 2009 our rummage sale raised $10,000 for St. Paul's; used to purchase a truck for the parish. In 2010, we also donated two computers to St. Paul's.
Beyond our gifts, our prayers and solidarity with others facing difficult circumstances brings glory to God, and helps us live out the Gospel. Well Done! ~ The Outreach Committee ~

Godly Play |
The Children's Gathering on the Square
Sundays, 9 am to 10 am St. Peter's Loft
|
The program takes place in The Loft at the back of St Peter's Church, from 9am to 10am on Sunday mornings. It is appropriate for children who are curious about the bible stories that they hear in church, enrolled in pre-school through the 6th grade of school. Older children are welcome to assist as 'helpers.'
Mar. 16. The Faces of Easter I & II. Today we heard the first two in our seven story series called 'The Faces of Easter'. We will remember Jesus' life and ministry over seven stories that we merge into all the Sundays of Godly Play in Lent. The first story tells of the birth of a baby, born to be a king, but not the kind of king that people were expecting. This king was called 'The Word" and was born a wordless child. The second story will remember how very human and how very divine Jesus was when he was a boy. In this story from Luke, Jesus stayed in Jerusalem after a Passover pilgrimage with his parents and went to the Temple to study with the priests there. Jesus' parents were understandably upset, Jesus answered, why were you worried, didn't you know I would be in my Father's house? We wondered about these stories together by bringing pieces of other Godly Play stories that we think are important to "help tell the story". You might like to ask your child what they brought to the story today and why?
Mar. 23. The faces of Easter III. We are all on the journey toward the greatest Christian mystery, which we know as Easter. In Godly Play, we spend the six weeks of Lent revisiting pivotal moments in the life of Jesus and his journey to the cross and beyond. We add a little more to story each week. Today we hear again the stories of the miracle of Jesus' birth in Bethlehem and his boyhood adventure in the Temple. We will also spend some time listening to each other as we ponder what each of us felt was important in the stories for us.

Monthly Spiritual Growth Group
"Rupp Group"
|
Tuesday, 18 Mar., 4:45 pm to 6:30 pm
Von Holt Room
|
As a reminder, the next Spiritual Growth "Rupp Group" gathering is this Tuesday, March 18th in the Von Holt Room from 4:45-6:30 pm. The Theme for the month of March is "Leaning on God." How appropriate for Lent!
For folks that have been interested, but haven't yet come - try it! There has been rich conversation, and a growing commitment for those who attend to continue this important monthly spiritual refresher.
It's not required, but purchasing and pre-reading the chapter for "March" (in this case) is helpful. We are using Joyce Rupp's Book, "May I have this Dance."
