Lent Brings Changes
|
Our Liturgy Helps Us Prepare for Easter Joy!
The Season of Lent is a time of repentance, introspection and prayerful preparation for the Paschal Mystery of dying and rising with Christ. This Mystery is liturgically and spiritually enacted as we celebrate in the great Triduum of Holy Week (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil).
During Lent, together with the catechumens who are being led to the sacrament of initiation, we listen more intently to the word of God and devote ourselves to prayer and acts of charity as we prepare to renew our baptismal promises at Easter. In our liturgy, music is more austere and reflective of the season. The Alleluia is not sung or said until the Easter Vigil. The Gloria is said only on a few important feasts in Lent. Use of the organ is limited to accompanying singing and occasional voluntaries, and the choir's role is also more reserved. What a joyful noise it will be when Easter arrives!
You'll notice other liturgical changes during the Season of Lent. Our service leaflets will guide us through the services each week, but isn't it nice to be reminded of these changes ahead of time! Starting on Ash Wednesday, we will be using Eucharistic Prayer A. Note that on the First and Fifth Sundays in Lent we will begin with The Great Litany. The Collect of the Dayfollows the Litany, and then we continue with the Liturgy of the Word. The Great Litany is our most comprehensive form of prayer, including asking for the forgiveness of sin, and so the Prayers of the People and Confession of Sin are omitted on those two Sundays.
On the other Sundays of Lent the service begins with The Penitential Rite, whichincludes the Confession of Sin. It is the custom that all who are able kneel when the Celebrant says, "Let us confess our sins..." Once the absolution is given, everyone stands for the Kyrie. After the Kyrie, the Celebrant continues with the Collect of the Day. On these Sundays, Form I of the Prayers of the Peoplewill be sung at the 10.30 am service.
In Lent we conclude the service on a more contemplative note as well. After the Post-Communion Prayer, the Celebrant says, "Bow down before the Lord." At this point, all may kneel for the Prayer Over the People, which is offered in lieu of a Blessing in Lent. Then, all stand for the Dismissal. In order to maintain the spirit of a quiet ending, there is no Hymn after the dismissal. The procession leaves the cathedral and goes onto the lanai to greet the people.
We are excited about all that is planned in Lent as we prepare heart, mind and spirit for sharing in Christ's Resurrection. In addition to the special speakers for our Wednesday night Lenten Program and Sunday morning Dean's Forums, we are also starting our Sandwich Ministry as a way of tangibly sharing ourselves with those in need. For many, Lent is a favorite season of renewal. In whatever personal or corporate Lenten disciplines you choose this year, may we all actively enter into a Holy Lent.
Lenten Blessings from the Dean and staff...

Light for our Path from Monastic Wisdom
9:20-10:10 am Sundays in Von Holt Room |
There is a deep current interest in insights from the monastic tradition that can illuminate our spiritual journey today. In three forums, The Rev. Martin Smith will look at ways in which monastic spirituality can help us with the questions 'what does it mean to be an authentic person? What kind of human being does the life of the Gospel enable us to become?'

Ministry from the Heart with The Rev. Martin Smith
In these three sessions, Martin Smith will help us explore the relationship between our experience of intimacy with God and our call to service, outreach and evangelism. Our outgoing lives as Christians can become a set of tasks unless we can experience for ourselves the grace and presence of God as the source of our motivation. Join us for a conversation about the 'mystical core' of ministry.

The Children's Gathering on the Square
Sundays, 9 am to 10 am St. Peter's Loft
|
The program takes place in The Loft at the back of St Peter's Church, from 9am to 10am on Sunday mornings. It is appropriate for children who are curious about the bible stories that they hear in church, enrolled in pre-school through the 6th grade of school. Older children are welcome to assist as 'helpers.'
Mar. 9. The Mystery of Easter (a.k.a. Lenten Puzzle). Today we hear the story of the Mystery of Lent. We hear this story just as Lent begins to remind us that a change is coming and that we are about to enter another mystery. This time of waiting is like Advent, but it is even longer because the mystery it prepares us for is an even bigger mystery - Easter! The 'story' is really a puzzle of 6 pieces in the shape of a cross to represent the 6 weeks of Lent. It is purple on one side, the color of waiting, royalty and seriousness. On the other side, the puzzle is white, the color of pure celebration! That is the paradox of the season - it is both serious and somber but promises pure celebration in the resurrection.
Because many of the children have not had the opportunity to be marked with ashes for Lent, we will explore how this ash came to be, and what it signifies for Christians in the Episcopal tradition. Karin Tamura will visit our class today to take our photographs for the St. Peter's Church directory.

The Order of the Daughters of the King

Submitted by Cassandra Pinnick

Are you called to be a Daughter of the King?
The Order of the Daughters of the KingŪ (DOK) is a spiritual sisterhood of women dedicated to a life of Prayer, Service and Evangelism. The Daughters of the King was founded in 1885, as an order for women (lay and ordained, married, partnered and single) who are communicants of the Episcopal Church. A prospective Daughter engages in a twelve-week period of study and discernment, and then takes vows of Prayer and Service, which is the focus of their work.
A twelve-week study period will commence at the Cathedral, with an introductory meeting for women who wish to know more about the Order of the Daughters of the King, to be held this Sunday March 9th at 4pm in the Second Floor Conference Room. In the meantime, please feel free to contact Dean Brownridge or the undersigned about this important new ministry in our Cathedral life.
