Lent 2014

"Pa`akai a Malamalama" (Salt and Light)

Reflections from the Dean

The most important feature of Lent is not what we give up, or what we seek to take up as a discipline, it is the opportunity for us to grow closer in our relationship with God.

Our 2014 Lent Program will be an especially outstanding offering for the Cathedral and larger community. We have two priests coming during the season who will present programs that will open us to new possibilities of life in God.

Starting on Ash Wednesday with the Peggy Kai Lecture, we'll be blessed to have The Reverend (Fr.) Martin Smith of Washington, DC with us. Fr. Smith is well known throughout the Episcopal Church, the global Anglican Communion and beyond as a writer, preacher and teacher who explores contemporary spirituality with resources from our deepest traditions. A number of his books, "The Word is Very Near You," "A Season for the Spirit," "Reconciliation," and more recently, "Compass and Stars," and a fully revised edition of "Reconciliation," (with the Rev. Mtr. Julia Gatta) are widely used in spiritual formation. He recently retired as Sr. Associate Rector at St Columba's Episcopal Church, in Washington, DC. He travels widely leading workshops and retreats. An ordained a priest for over 40 years, Fr. Smith has served as Chaplain to the Episcopal Church's House of Bishops. He is a former monk, as a Brother of the Society of St. John the Evangelist (SSJE) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and eventually served as the order's Superior.

In addition to participating in our worship and community life, Fr. Smith will be offering four distinct programs: The Peggy Kai Lecture, The Wednesday Lent Soup Supper Program, The Dean's Forum, and The Men's Quiet Day.

In at the Deep End: Exploring the Spirituality of Mission
Martin Smith invites us to challenge the conventional division between concern for 'the spiritual life' and the Church's call to mission. Exploring in depth the spirituality and theology of baptism is a key way for us to grasp the call to mission as an outcome of our experience of the urgent 'wanting-to-be of God in our lives,' our sense of participation in the ongoing life of Christ in the world, and our identity as co-creators of God's future, in the Spirit.

A Quiet Day for Men with Fr. Martin Smith
March 8, 2014
9 am - 3 pm
St. Andrew's Schools - Malulani Gallery (In Transfiguration Building)

Building on the theme of his Peggy Kai Lecture, Fr. Smith will invite men to explore why the division between concern for 'the spiritual life' and the Church's call to mission needs to be reconsidered in order to develop an authentic life in God. For many men, this artificial division between contemplation and action has to led false choices and a lack of balance. An authentic life in God will lead all people to become more authentic persons, and that will include a more authentic away of understanding what it is to be a man who walks with God.

Please RSVP at the Dean's Office; space is limited.

The Sunday Dean's Forum
9:15 am March 9, 16, and 23

Light for our Path from Monastic Wisdom

There is a deep current interest in insights from the monastic tradition that can illuminate our spiritual journey today. In three forums, Martin Smith will look at ways in which monastic spirituality can help us with the questions 'what does it mean to be an authentic person? What kind of human being does the life of the Gospel enable us to become?'

Wednesday Evening Program with Soup Supper
6:15 Following 5:30 Evensong & Holy Communion

Ministry from the Heart

In these three sessions, Martin Smith will help us explore the relationship between our experience of intimacy with God and our call to service, outreach and evangelism. Our outgoing lives as Christians can become a set of tasks unless we can experience for ourselves the grace and presence of God as the source of our motivation. Joins us for a conversation about the 'mystical core' of ministry.

The Revd. (Fr.) Peter Allan, CR

In April, The Revd. Fr. Peter Allan, CR of The Community of the Resurrection in Mirfield, England will be with us to offer programs on the connection of liturgy, spirituality and mission. I will discuss his program in detail prior to his arrival.

I invite you to not only participate in as much of our program as possible, I hope you will invite a friend or family member to "come and see" what God has in store.

The Bread of Life Which Satisfies

A New Ministry Opportunity

Jesus says, "I am the bread of life."  From the Altar, we've experience this "bread from heaven;" a bread freely offered to us, and which satiates a hunger within like nothing else can.  Weekly we gather to worship and receive a fore-taste of that Heavenly Banquet.  As we consume the body of Christ, bit-by-bit we "become what we receive."  This sacrament works on us.  Transforms us.  We too become bread for the world.

During Lent, I would invite the congregation to continue in this "sacrament of love" (coined by Martin Luther), and extend that feeding of Christ from the Altar out into our neighborhood.  Just as Jesus came to feed the hungry-poor, both body and soul, our baptism commissions us into that same work.  This Lent - in worship, in special speakers like the Rev Martin Smith, in sacred music - we will be fed, body and soul.  In response to God's gracious love, we are starting (again) a small Sandwich Ministry for the houseless and hungry living near the Cathedral.  We've been looking for ways in which God might have us better use the kitchen in Davies Hall - and this ministry is perhaps one more opportunity to do so - especially if it catches on.

For the 6 Sundays during Lent 2014 (starting March 9th), we're looking for a few people each week to make the 25 sandwiches and assemble the lunch bags after their particular Sunday service.  Later that afternoon, a couple more folks will meet at the Cathedral with Fr. Walter Stevens and/or myself to venture out and distribute the lunch bags nearby.

The Holy Spirit's been working on many of us to "do something" for the hungry we encounter in our midst.  As you've heard the Dean pronounce after the consecration: "The Body of Christ; become what you receive!"  Much like our Lord - we too are invited to feed others!  Please email me if you want to help feed the hungry on one of these Lenten Sundays (susan.sowers@thecathedralofstandrew.org).  There's also a sign-up sheet under the Aloha Tent.  Also indicate if you would prefer to be on the sandwich-making-team in the kitchen, or distribute the meal that afternoon.  Monetary donations for this ministry are also welcome!

Christ's Eucharistic life continues in us.

We give thanks to God for our lives, and then are shared to feed the world.

Gratefully yours,

Mother Susan...+

Godly Play

The Children's Gathering on the Square
Sundays, 9 am to 10 am
St. Peter's Loft
The program takes place in The Loft at the back of St Peter's Church, from 9 am to 10 am on Sunday mornings. It is appropriate for children who are curious about the bible stories that they hear in church, enrolled in preschool through the 6th grade of school. Older children are welcome to assist as 'helpers.'

Feb. 23 Parable of the Mustard Seed - We heard the Parable of the Mustard Seed today. This will be the last parable we will hear in this cycle of Godly Play stories told in the Loft this year. Mustard seeds are very, tiny seeds. The ones we use for cooking are actually mustard seedpods, the seeds are so small that hundreds are packed into that tiny mustard seed we see floating in our pickle jar. We wondered how something so large could come from something so small? With God's touch, great things can grow.

Mar 2 The Story of St. Patrick - St. Patrick, someone who traveled for God. Everyone thinks they know about St. Patrick but there is much more to his life than most think. Patrick was born in or near the year 390, and he most certainly was not born Irish. Most likely he was of mixed Welsh and Roman heritage and grew up in the Western part of England (or possibly Scotland). Patrick traveled from one part of the British Isles to another several times, not always by his own choosing. Patrick loved learning and taught about God, the Holy Spirit and Jesus wherever he went.

 `Iolani Guild's Spring Luncheon

Saturday, March 8

11 am in the Von Holt Room

Submitted by Ann Hansen

The `Iolani Guild will host its spring luncheon meeting on Saturday, March 8, from 11 am to 2 pm in the Von Holt Room.

Following a business meeting, there will be a potluck luncheon. Please bring a dish to share.

Kahu Kaleo Patterson and Kala Holden will offer a presentation on Ho`oponopono from their years of facilitating this traditional Hawaiian cultural practice. Reverend Kaleo has taught Ho`oponopono for 12 years at the University of Hawai`I and in the prison system.

Kupuna Kala has practiced Ho`oponopono at Hina Mauka helping people overcome their substance abuse. She explains: Ho`oponopono is a Hawaiian way of attaining healing and well-being. It is actually more than healing and well-being. It is truly all about making everything 'very, very right'."

Now is our chance to move past merely having heard the term "Ho`oponopono" or only a snippet of knowledge to a fuller understanding of this important Hawaiian cultural practice.

See you on Saturday, March 8.th

Saipan Clothing Drive

Sundays Feb. 16, 23, and March 2

Drop off at Sunday Aloha Hour

Once again, your Outreach Committee is collecting gently-used clothing to send to St. Paul's Saipan. The parishioners there, many of whom are displaced garment workers, either use the clothing or sell it in local swap-meet markets to raise funds for basic necessities. We will accept clothing on the Sundays Feb. 16, 23, and March 2. There will be a collection box each of these Sunday's under the Aloha Tent. Clothing can also be brought to the office during those weeks. The donated clothing will be blessed on March 2 and shipped to Saipan the following week.

Please contribute only clothing in wearable condition (no missing buttons, tears, or stains), and items suitable for wear in warm climates. Alas, this is not the place to get rid of your old mainland
winter items!

The people of St. Paul's Saipan are very grateful for our generosity!

Exploring the Spirituality of Mission

5 Mar. 2014, 6:45-7:30 Von Holt Room

The Rev.

Next week we will share further details on both the Wednesday Nights and Sunday Morning Lenten programs by our two visiting priests. They promise to be wonderful. Plan now to attend. A Holy Lent will prepare our hearts for the joy of Easter!

We invite you to share in the 2014 Lenten email series from Episcopal Relief & Development.  Each day during Lent you will receive a daily reflection, co-authored by a group of respected leaders from our international programs and across the Episcopal Church. During this season of reflection on our Christian faith, their writings will enhance your spiritual journey as they both inspire and challenge you.  Each daily meditation is presented in both English and Spanish.
