The Annual Meeting & Parish Pupu Potluck

Saturday, January 25th
6 p.m. in Davies Hall

ANNOUNCEMENT OF MEETING TIME & AGENDA
Every January we are required to have the Annual Meeting of the Cathedral of St. Andrew. This year's meeting will follow immediately after the Saturday Night 5:30 Mass, January 25th at 6:00 pm in the Cathedral itself. We will then adjourn to fellowship, food and drink in Davies Hall immediately after elections and reports. Everyone is encouraged to attend - as we must make quorum to elect officers. Chapter election results for 5 upcoming vacancies will be determined and announced that night; to include the appointment of the senior warden, and a brief video from the Diocesan Standing Committee. The treasurer will also provide an overview of last year's financials, and introduce this year's approved budget. The business portion of our meeting is expected to take almost an hour.

PARISH ELECTIONS
Cathedral elections for the upcoming Chapter vacancies and our Diocesan Convention Delegates will happen early (from 6- 6:30 pm), so please arrive on-time. Election results will be announced right away. Those who wish to run for an office should speak with the Dean or wardens about the expectations for serving.
(Dean: The Very Rev. Walter Brownridge at walter.brownridge@thecathedralofstandrew.org , or Sr. Warden: Debbie Nakanelua-Richards at Debbie.nakanelua-Richards@hawaiianair.com, or Junior Warden: Andrew Jackson at acjackson@kitv.com.

CANDIDATES FOR VESTRY & DIOCESAN CONVENTION
Currently the following persons are running for five spots on the Chapter - Priscilla Millen, Leianne Lee Loy, Harry Spiegelberg and Stanley Yon. Please let us know if there are others who may be interested in serving on chapter or as Diocesan Convention delegates.

WHO MAY VOTE?
The election monitors will have a parish list of 'members' who are in good standing. It is easy to be in good standing. If you attend services, and the church has a record of your financial giving, than you are in good standing.

POTLUCK
Saving the best for last! Prior to the 6pm meeting, please drop off your pupu's and beverage of choice in Davies Hall. After the
business portion of the meeting in the Cathedral, we will retire to Davies Hall (approx. 7-8pm) for food and fellowship! We see this part of the gathering as a time to celebrate and have fun with our Cathedral Ohana! Wine is appropriate for this event. Whatever you bring to share will be just fine. Bottomline - it's about being together and being grateful for this spiritual home that we all share!

If you have any questions, please speak with Dean Walter, Mother Susan or any member of the Chapter. They will be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Congratulations to Mtr. Anna and Fr. David

Sun Woo Daniel

Dear Friends: The birth of a child is a joyous and solemn occasion in the life of a family.  It is also an occasion for rejoicing in the Christian community.  I bid you, therefore, to join David and Anna in giving thanks to Almighty God our heavenly Father, the Lord of all life, for the gift of Sun Woo Daniel to be their son.

Many Hands - make light work!

A new "support" ministry

No reservations required (or meetings!)

Are you looking for small but highly effective ways to help support our cathedral services and ministries? Tired of going to committee meetings to find out what you can do? Karen Sender, Director of Communications, and Charmaine Bernard, Cathedral Facilities Manager, are starting this section of the Cathedral Life Newsletter to connect you to small, date-time specific tasks that have high impact on helping our services and events go from good to great. This little support ministry will be called Many Hands and we promise to make the offerings in the list be very clear to time, effort, and skills required. And we would like to follow the old model of our Benedictine Workdays where you can either sign-up via email or phone call, or just show up at the time and location specified. If Many Hands is well received, we hope to explore bringing our Benedictine Workdays back where we can come together for a day or a few hours in fellowship, work, worship, prayer, and even just walking around the Close in joy of our sacred space. Want to try this out? Here is our first opportunity. The more the merrier! As we say, many hands make light work!

Opportunity: Need help with the breakdown for annual meeting/reception, putting tables and chairs away, and general cleanup to prepare the room for Sunday morning.
When: Sat. 25 Jan. 2014, about 7 pm (following Annual Meeting Party)
Where: Davies Hall

FACE - Cathedral House Meetings

F.A.C.E. (Faith Action for Community Equity) is a grassroots community-organizing group. The Cathedral of St. Andrew is a member of F.A.C.E. Through the end of January, FACE will be conducting House Meetings in the various member churches and organizations. House Meetings are small group (10-12 people) discussions that focus on the specific issues and concerns of the individual churches or organizations. This listening process is a key component of how FACE chooses the issues that it works on. This work is done by comparing the various notes from the meetings and seeing which issues are of concern for multiple churches in Honolulu.

If you are interested in participating please contact the Dean's Office.

Upcoming Schedule

9:15-10:10 am Sundays in Von Holt Room

2014 might be the year you add Adult Spiritual Formation to your Sunday morning activities... The next two Sunday's we'll be offering a change of pace from scripture oriented topics, and will look specifically at Cathedral interests.

Jan 19th: 2014 Budget review, "How we will use your donations to do Christ's work in Hawai'i and the World?", Our Treasurer Elizabeth Conklin will provide an analysis of the budget adopted by Chapter in December. Her presentation will be straightforward and requires no knowledge of financial statements or terminology! It will focus on our responsibilities as Jesus' agents in the world to follow His commands, specifically the priorities set by our 2013 Chapter for pursuing those responsibilities, and our responsibility for maintaining Queen Emma's heritage. Everyone who has contributed to St. Andrews in 2013 or intends to do so in 2014 should attend, to understand how these donations will be used!

Jan 26th: Annual Meeting Feedback- The Dean will address the congregation on the Annual Meeting (New ideas emerging, chapter members voted in, etc...)

Godly Play

The Children's Gathering on the Square
Sundays, 9 am to 10 am
St. Peter's Loft
The program takes place in The Loft at the back of St Peter's Church, from 9 am to 10 am on Sunday mornings. It is appropriate for children who are curious about the bible stories that they hear in church, enrolled in preschool through the 6th grade of school. Older children are welcome to assist as 'helpers.'

Jan. 19 Parable of the Good Shepherd - We heard the Parable of the Good Shepherd, which is found in a gold parable box, because parables are gifts that were given to us 2,000 years ago. In the story, The Good Shepherd knows each of his sheep by name and they know the sound of his voice. While he shows the sheep the way to the good green grass and the cool, clear water, he also goes wherever he needs to when they are in danger.

Jan. 26 Parable of the Good Samaritan - Parables are the closest thing we have to the actual words of Jesus. We treat these stories with great respect and wonder. Today we heard the story of the Good Samaritan. Why would a man whose people (the Samaritans) was part of a culture with a great deal of distrust and enmity toward the Jews (who felt the same about the Samaritans) would stop and help (and really care with his time, money and concern) when a priest and Levite (both thought to be devout Jews) crossed to the other side of the road and passed by).

Chrism Mass and Education Day is open to all Clergy and Lay people.

Saturday, April 5
Chrism Mass
9:00 am - 10:30 am in St. Andrew's Cathedral

Education Day
10:30 am - 3:00 pm in Davies Hall

Lunch will be served

The annual Chrism Mass of the Diocese will be held on Saturday, April 5, at 9:00 a.m., at the Cathedral of St. Andrew.  At this service, the Bishop blesses the oils of chrism (for baptism), healing, and the catechumenate, and the clergy take a portion of these oils back to their own churches for use during the coming year.

Following the Chrism Mass will be an educational day.  Special Guest speaker is the Rev. Kevin E. Martin, retired Dean of the Cathedral of St. Matthew in Dallas, TX, and current Congregational Development Officer for the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma. Martin is considered one of the foremost experts on congregational development. He is the author of two books, "The Myth of the 200 Barrier" and "5 Keys for Church Leaders", and has written numerous articles on leadership and congregational vitality.

Deadline to register is March 27, 2014.
