Reflections on the Season
|
"Pa`akai a Malamalama" (Salt and Light Reflections from the Dean)
The Solemnity of the Epiphany - Seeing Glory The Feast (and subsequent season) of The Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ marks the move of the child in the stable from the shadows onto the center stage. His glory begins to be manifest. On Sunday or Monday (depending on the congregation) we would have all celebrated that glory. In some countries, for instance Mexico, Epiphany is still the main day of rejoicing and present giving. It makes sense. We are celebrating the moment when people first start to take notice of the child, the moment when somebody who matters in the eyes of the world senses his glory and begins to feel who he is. In fact, on the first three Sundays after Christmas, we witness biblical occasions where this glory is revealed. They are: The Visitation of the Magi; The Baptism of Jesus; and The Wedding Feast at Cana. Each has it's own perspective: The Magi - We see God's glory as a human child. The Baptism of Jesus - We listen to God's Voice and behold the adult Jesus as God's anointed. The Wedding Feast at Cana - We see God's power to transform ordinary elements into the extraordinary Each of these events invites us to see something we think we know in a new way. The Magi saw something more, John Baptist and the others at the Jordan River saw and heard something more, and those at the wedding in Cana witness something new as well, something more than water jugs turned to wine. One of the Desert Fathers stories puts it very succinctly: "Abba Poemen said about Abba Pior that every single day he made a fresh beginning." We can't really erase our memories, and it wouldn't necessarily be good if we could-but what if every single day, we made a fresh beginning? Perhaps this is what John the Baptist was able to do. He saw Jesus in a fresh new way-he made a fresh beginning with someone he may have known all his life... So fresh and new that he could say, "I didn't really know him." N.B. The Annual Meeting is scheduled for Saturday January 25 at 6:00 p.m. It will be a potluck supper, and because we shall have fun (and we need a quorum) - I encourage everyone to attend. We need to elect members of Chapter and Delegates to Diocesan Convention. I hope to see you all there.

Godly Play
| The Children's Gathering on the Square Sundays, 9 am to 10 am St. Peter's Loft | The program takes place in The Loft at the back of St Peter's Church, from 9 am to 10 am on Sunday mornings. It is appropriate for children who are curious about the bible stories that they hear in church, enrolled in preschool through the 6th grade of school. Older children are welcome to assist as 'helpers.'
Jan 12, Holy Baptism - We hear the Story of Baptism. In our Episcopal tradition, Holy Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into the Church. It is like a gateway of sorts. We baptize people in the name of the Father Son, and Holy Spirit - the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer. We use three white overlapping circles as a way to understand the Trinity. We ask the children to remember the day of their baptism or look forward to it as we light candles from the Christ candle.
Jan. 19 Parable of the Good Shepherd - We heard the Parable of the Good Shepherd, which is found in a gold parable box, because parables are gifts that were given to us 2,000 years ago. In the story, The Good Shepherd knows each of his sheep by name and they know the sound of his voice. While he shows the sheep the way to the good green grass and the cool, clear water, he also goes wherever he needs to when they are in danger.

FACE - Cathedral House Meetings
|
F.A.C.E. (Faith Action for Community Equity) is a grassroots community-organizing group that The Cathedral of St. Andrew is a member. Through the end of January, FACE will be conducting House Meetings in the various member churches and organizations that make up FACE. House Meetings are small group (10-12 people) discussions that focus on the specific issues and concerns of the individual churches or organizations. This listening process is a key component of how FACE chooses the issues that it works on. This work is done by comparing the various notes from the meetings and seeing which issues are of concern for multiple churches in Honolulu.
If you are interested in participating please contact the Dean's Office at 808.524.2822 x.212 (Dean's Secretary, Natasha Dator).

The Annual Meeting & Parish Pupu Potluck
Saturday, January 25th
6 p.m. in Davies Hall
ANNOUNCEMENT OF MEETING TIME & AGENDA Every January we are required to have the Annual Meeting of the Cathedral of St. Andrew. This year's meeting will follow immediately after the Saturday Night 5:30 Mass, January 25th at 6:00 pm in the Cathedral itself. We will then adjourn to fellowship, food and drink in Davies Hall immediately after elections and reports. Everyone is encouraged to attend - as we must make quorum to elect officers. Chapter election results for 5 upcoming vacancies will be determined and announced that night; to include the appointment of the senior warden, and a brief video from the Diocesan Standing Committee. The treasurer will also provide an overview of last year's financials, and introduce this year's approved budget. The business portion of our meeting is expected to take almost an hour. PARISH ELECTIONS Cathedral elections for the upcoming Chapter vacancies and our Diocesan Convention Delegates will happen early (from 6- 6:30 pm), so please arrive on-time. Election results will be announced right away. Those who wish to run for an office should speak with the Dean or wardens about the expectations for serving. (Dean: the Very Rev. Walter Brownridge at walter.brownridge@thecathedralofstandrew.org , or Sr Warden: Debbie Nakanelua-Richards at Debbie.nakanelua-Richards@hawaiiair.com, or Junior Warden: Andrew Jackson at acjackson@kitv.com. CANDIDATES FOR VESTRY & DIOCESAN CONVENTION Currently the following persons are running for five spots on the Chapter - Priscilla Millen, Leianne Lee Loy, Harry Spiegelberg and Stanley Yon. Please let us know if there are others who may be interested in serving on chapter or as Diocesan Convention delegates. WHO MAY VOTE? The election monitors will have a parish list of 'members' who are in good standing. It is easy to be in good standing. If you attend services, and the church has a record of your financial giving, than you are in good standing. POTLUCK Saving the best for last! Prior to the 6pm meeting, please drop off your pupu's and beverage of choice in Davies Hall. After the business portion of the meeting in the Cathedral, we will retire to Davies Hall (approx. 7-8pm) for food and fellowship! We see this part of the gathering as a time to celebrate and have fun with our Cathedral Ohana! Wine is appropriate for this event. Whatever you bring to share will be just fine. Bottomline - it's about being together and being grateful for this spiritual home that we all share! If you have any questions, please speak with Dean Walter, Mother Susan or any member of the Chapter. They will be happy to answer any questions you might have.
