Reflections on the Season

"Pa`akai a Malamalama"
(Salt and Light Reflections from the Dean)

I am a member of The Fellowship of St. John. The Fellowship of Saint John is comprised of nearly 1,000 men and women throughout the world who desire to live their Christian life in special association with the Society of Saint John the Evangelist (SSJE). The SSJE Monastery is where I took my retreat in early September. The Brothers of the Society welcome members of the Fellowship as partners in the Gospel life, and pray for them by name in a regular cycle of daily worship. Together with us, they form an extended family - a company of friends abiding in Christ and seeking to bear a united witness to him as "the Way, the Truth and the Life," following the example of the Beloved Disciple.

One of the wonderful contributions SSJE makes to the wider Church is the on-line resource called "Brother Give Us a Word". It is a brief, daily meditation designed for anyone to pause, ponder, meditate and share. You can find it and subscribe to "Brother Give Us a Word" by going to the link, www.SSJE.org/word. During these Twelve Days of Christmas (December 25 - January 5). The Brothers recognize that many people may lose the deeper meaning of Christmas during the rush of the pre-Christmas shopping season. In light of that reality, The Brothers of SSJE are using their on-line ministry to invite us to draw nearer to God and receive the true gifts of Christmastide. Each day of Christmas has a short reflection written by one of the Brothers on a topic that is truly a gift. Each gift also provides an opportunity to go deeper and read a longer essay or sermon. The 12 Gifts of Christmas in this SSJE series are the following:

December 25 - Incarnation - Christmas Day
December 26 - Witness - St. Stephen, Deacon & Martyr
December 27 - Word - St. John, Apostle & Evangelist
December 28 - Innocence - Holy Innocents
December 29 - Love
December 30 - Light
December 31 - Peace
January 1 - Jesus - The Holy Name of our Lord Jesus Christ (OLJC)
January 2 - Hope
January 3 - Joy
January 4 - Faith
January 5 - Gratitude

Today as I write this I commend the reflection by Bro. Mark Brown, SSJE who writes the following on Light: "Wherever light and life are present, Christ himself is there, because he is light and life. Even when we don't know him by name".

Another gift that touches me is from the Society's Superior, Bro. Geoffrey Tristan, SSJE who said this about the Word: This is the most potent image for the Incarnation: The Word was made flesh. Jesus was born into this world of darkness to give to each one of us the gift of God's blazing glory".

Beloved in Christ, my prayer for each of you is to experience the fullness of these 12 gifts of Christmas in the year ahead and beyond.

Mahalo Nui Loa in the Name of the Word Made Flesh!

From Mother Susan

To all our Friends and Ohana of the Cathedral -
Mele Kalikimaka me ka Hau'oli Makahiki Hou !
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !

This being my first Christmas and New Year on the Islands, I'm learnin' some more words! Even on the Mainland - many are familiar with the happy Hawaiian Christmas greeting, Mele Kalikimaka. It rolls easily off your tongue, and of course, there's that fun song to keep it running around your head, even when you wish it wouldn't...

But I have been especially captivated to learn the Hawaiian greeting for wishing someone a 'Happy New Year': Hau'oli Makahiki Hou (how-OH-lee mah-kah-hee-kee ho). Initially, this greeting was a little difficult for me to just spout off, but the history behind it is wonderful.

Apparently, in ancient times, long before contact from Western Discoverers, this four-month period (aprox. Nov - Feb) was a time of resting and feasting - with a cessation of all warfare. Back then, as the old year drew to a close, the priests of the Hawaiian religion would watch for the appearance of Makili'i (the Pleiades star cluster) to officially mark the start of this season of festival and peace. Interestingly for us today - during the same period that Christians celebrate the coming of the Prince of Peace, so too the ancient Hawaiian's awaited the coming of the god, Lono. People longed for the coming of Lono, who brought rain, fertility and peace.

This inner-longing for abundant life and peace - resides deeply within all people across the ages. Recently speaking to locals in our congregation, I learned that even now, Makahiki Time is the season that Hawaiians still look inward for an annual self-exam. As we approach the New Year, our Advent skills of quieting ourselves; of being retrospect and asking those important questions, might really get us on the right path for 2014. Life here on this planet, in human skin, is short. How can we live more abundantly? How can we walk with the Shalom of Christ, and share that sense with others? New Years' resolutions that are not first founded on naming the area of our life that we want to offer to Christ to fill and heal, will quickly go by the wayside. Before you decide to join us for Yoga, or Bible Study, or determine to have more personal reading time and less TV time - FIRST have a prayerful look inside with our Emmanuel-God, our With-US God.  In this Makahiki Time, harken back to your Advent reflection skills, and see where Christ is inviting you to grow...  Our Lord is gracious and abundant - always wanting to give us Life!

Mele Kalikimaka me ka Hau'oli Makahiki Hou !

The Christmas and Epiphany Story in Word and Art

Come join us as we explore the Christmas and Epiphany stories from scripture as illustrated by John Augustus Swanson.  Our format for Dec 29th and Jan 5th is to view and discuss several short presentations on these illustrations.  Each painting is engaged theologically by one of the esteemed professors of the Biblical Studies at Chandler's Divinity School (Emory); such as Dr. Luke Timothy Johnson, Dr. Thomas Long, and Dr. Gail R. O'Day. We have booklets for everyone as we work our way through the various scripture stories in an art form you are sure to find wonderful.  Our forum will be co-led by The Rev. Susan Sowers and Dr. Susan Lukens.

Godly Play

The Children's Gathering on the Square
Sundays, 9 am to 10 am
St. Peter's Loft
The program takes place in The Loft at the back of St Peter's Church, from 9 am to 10 am on Sunday mornings. It is appropriate for children who are curious about the bible stories that they hear in church, enrolled in preschool through the 6th grade of school. Older children are welcome to assist as 'helpers.'

Jan. 5 The Holy Family and the Wise Men's Gifts - this Sunday we have anticipated the arrival of Epiphany (January 6, tomorrow) by changing the color of our altar and calendar to green.  The in the tradition of the church, green symbolizes the green things of Gods earth and referring to growth of the spirit of God within us in response to Jesus coming at Christmas. The church's mission is to grow the Gospel of Christ  from its source in the Jewish community to all nations on earth.) Epiphany is the day our tradition designates to remember the arrival of the Magi in Bethlehem. We recalled together all the weeks in Advent as we had before Christmas but gave special attention to the final blue candle, the one that represents the 3 Kings. Here we stopped and focused on what the three gifts were the Magi brought for the baby who is the Messiah. Gold is not a surprising gift for a king, but did you know that frankincense was used in worship thousands of years ago and is still used today? Myrrh is a resin that was burned at funerals. What did the three wise men foreshadow about this baby that maybe others did not yet realize?

Jan 12, Holy Baptism - We hear the Story of Baptism. In our Episcopal tradition, Holy Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into the Church. It is like a gateway of sorts. We baptize people in the name of the Father Son, and Holy Spirit - the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer. We use three white overlapping circles as a way to understand the Trinity. We ask the children to remember the day of their baptism or look forward to it as we light candles from the Christ candle.

FACE - Cathedral House Meetings

F.A.C.E. (Faith Action for Community Equity) is a grassroots community-organizing group that The Cathedral of St. Andrew is a member. Through the end of January, FACE will be conducting House Meetings in the various member churches and organizations that make up FACE. House Meetings are small group (10-12 people) discussions that focus on the specific issues and concerns of the individual churches or organizations. This listening process is a key component of how FACE chooses the issues that it works on. This work is done by comparing the various notes from the meetings and seeing which issues are of concern for multiple churches in Honolulu.

If you are interested in participating please contact the Dean's Office at 808.524.2822 x.212 (Dean's Secretary, Natasha Dator).

The Nonviolence of Queen Liliuokalani - Annexation Petition

Film Segment:

The Ku`e anti-annexation petitions of 1897 By Hawaiian Voice Jan 16, 2013

"When the self-proclaimed Republic of Hawai`i, made up of traitors who had engineered a coup d'etat against Queen Lili`uokalani and her government, attempted a treaty of annexation to the United States, loyal Hawaiian Kingdom subjects voiced their opposition. Traveling by foot, horse, train and inter-island steamship, the men and women of the Hui Aloha `Aina gathered the signatures of virtually every adult citizen of the islands in a "monster petition" that was delivered to Congress. The treaty was defeated."

This is a clip from the program "Aloha Quest - Part One," a one hour program covering various historical events in Hawai`i from 1840 through 1898. The entire program is available on DVD at:

Program for Spiritual Growth in 2014
"The Rupp Group"

Starts Tuesday, 21 Jan.  4:45-6:30 pm
Von Holt Room

Won't you join us?  Starting the evening (4:45-6:30 pm) of Tuesday, Jan 21st, and each third Tuesday thereafter, we will explore our walk with God in the daily and seasonal rhythms of our lives.  Using Sister Joyce Rupp's book, "May I Have this Dance?," we will organize our gatherings around her monthly themes with related scriptures, prayer suggestions, litanies, guided meditations, and ideas for reflection and journal keeping.   It is my prayer that as we build relationships with one another and with Christ, that we will be better sustained for life's journey together.

The book's chapters are divided up by month.   While not required, I recommend participant's read/skim the chapter of the month before the gathering.  You may order your own personal copy through Amazon.com, or handouts will be available. We will meet in the Van Holt Room.  For planning purposes, I'd be interested to know if you are thinking of attending.  Blessings,  Susan... susan.sowers@thecathedralofstandrew.com.
