Prevent Cold Stress Injuries in the Workplace

With winter approaching, it's important to remind employees about the signs and symptoms of injuries that may happen when working in cold, windy and wet weather conditions. Many people forget that it does not need to be below freezing for a cold stress injury to occur. Common injuries are frostbite, hypothermia and trench foot.

Cold Stress Injury Prevention Tips:  Cold Weather Work

  • Avoid exhaustion or fatigue (energy keeps muscles warm)
  • Avoid nicotine and tobacco products (they increase the risk of frostbite)
  • Drink warm, sweet, caffeine-free beverages
  • If skin gets wet, dry off immediately (wet skin freezes at a higher temperature)
  • Perform outdoor work during the warmest part of the day
  • Remember COLD for clothing
    • C - Keep it Clean
    • O - Avoid Overheating
    • L - Wear Loose and Layered clothing, and
    • D - Keep clothing Dry
  • Take frequent breaks in warm, dry areas
  • Wear protective gloves when handling propane tanks (fittings can reach -50°F)
